Thanks chaps for the replies i do not know the exact location or site plan and it does warrant further investigation.
Anson C.19 TX168 of the Metropolitan Comms Squadron ,hit buiding on overshoot and crashed in Edgware Road,Hendon 09.02.1948.
I know it is not the subject but it might get someone to add to the story.
P-51D KM232 Digby Station Flight ex 442 Squadron crashed in the circuit at Hendon at 14.30 on 14th November 1945,as he was preparing to land. There is a poem to her husband by Diana Walker in “Out of The Blue” by Laddie Lucas. The aircraft was used by No1 OATS Officers Advanced Training School at Digby and was left over when the Canadians left Digby in July 1945.
I cannot help with the location but the RAF Museum archives could. Also a Anson C.19 i believe crashed onto a house on the Hendon boundary in the fifties
Former Nigerian Airways Dc-3 5N-AAN was based at Benin and used for night time bombing sorties against the Biafran airstrip at Uli. a commercial type rollermat was used to eject bombs up to 250lb through the removed passenger entrance door. It was all a bit hit and miss and the mercenary pilots were reluctant to engage the enemy at times and there have been quotes of the crews drinking on board. They would tune into the Uli frequency and taunt the airlift crews. I think it would make a great Spielberg production !!
The intruder was a Nigerian DC-3.
28.01.45 YP-80A 44-83026 Crashed 3 miles west of Burtonwood, near Bold Lancs. Major FA Borsodi killed. He was the test pilot at Wright Field in July 1944 on P-51 dive tests.
Thanks New Forest,he was certainly a colourful character a latter day pirate who seemed to steer around trouble. His flying experience was mainly on pistons like the DC-7,Connie and C-46. In retirement i believe he lived on a boat and his son is about. His log books would be quite interesting !
I have the book ! and various “Propliner”articles, but would be interested in his activities post Biafra. Did he have a Boeing 707 in Miami ?
Code was DC . D+ not a big grin !! finger trouble
It was a B-24J coded DC:D+ abandoned 5 miles East of Cheddington. Pilot was 1/Lt Kenneth L Stoddard and the aircraft had only flown 3 missions.
It happened around March 1944 to save paint and weight ,quicker production times ?
Cleethorpes beach was also used by Austers G-AGWY and G-AIBY and Auster V G-AKWS. These were hangared overnight at Waltham.
Power Jets used Bruntingthorpe from 11.09.44 to 14.05.46 when they moved to Bitteswell . They used Wellington IIs W5389 and W5518 which served from 22.11.44 till 25.11.48.
As your father saw the aircraft in the Dunstable area i wonder if it was a Napiers of Luton test bed ??
