Forgot to attach profile, so here it is.

Swordfish ‘dive bombed’ some shore instalations, hangers, and ships during the Toranto attack, seem to recall one bomb went right though the deck of a cruiser, and out the bottom of the hull. But anyway, the Swordfish DID drop bombs.

Re photo 9, it looks to me like a Skua, see underside profile below.

Photo 3 – Bombs ready for use in the FAA attack on the Italian fleet in port at Torranto?

Photo 6 – HMS Barham (Queen Elizabeth class battleship) blowing up after being torpedoed, 25/11/41?

    photo 10 – Potez 63-11?

Photo 12 – I think this is one of the three (green?) mice that were the emblem of 12 Gruppo, of the Italian air force.

I’m sure others will confirm/enlarge on the above.

    Allan,

I also have this photo, as well as a version with ‘caps on’, and one where they’re grouped around and on the Spitfire MkVII.

With regard to date, having looked through my file of who joined/left when, the date I come up with is sometime around the 19th November 1944. Given that the dates in the 131sqdn ORB for when people joined & left the squadron might not be 100% reliable, you’d probably have to say it could have been taken a week or so either side of the 19th.

The names are (top row, L to R) Sowery, Morris, Blackwell-Smyth, Nicholson, de Burgh, Wilson, Clatworthy, Somper (spy), Doherty (M.O.), Hewlett (Eng Off).

(middle row, L to R) Richards, Hirst, King, Waterhouse (Fll/Lt), Pegge (C/O), Caterall (Flt/Lt), Parry, Maingard, Edwards.

(front row, L to R) Kelly, Tanner, McNulty, Rigg, Williams, Patton.

    Hope this helps

    Geoff.

Thanks for the info Martin (?). Anyone else have any info on these emblems, or photos of their use during the BoB?

    Serge,

I would be very interested in obtaining photocopies of the 131 sqdn section from the logbooks of any Belgian pilots who served with the squadron, and copies of any photos from their time with 131 sqdn. Could you help me with this, either from your own material, or by passing on a letter from me to the person/family concerned? I would of course cover any costs incurred re photocopying of logbooks, or copying of photos.

Sadly, other than looking up the Belgian ‘period’ in the 131 sqdn ORB, I can’t be of any help re the Belgians in the squdron. But feel free to ask me to look up anything in the 131 sqdn ORB.

If you’d rather correspond off the forum, send me a PM.

    Allan,

I have the entire 131 sqdn ORB, so if you need any info re the Belgian flight, let me know.

I’ve quite frequently come across mention of the navy recovering the bodies of aircrew from the sea, and then giving them a burial at sea almost straight away, as I expect have you. Not really practical to keep the body on board, especially if they weren’t callling at a port that day, or if the body was in a bad condition.

Anyway, your info sorts out the reason for Flt/Lt Venesoen being in the sea. Given that it was D-day, it might be a job finding out which ship, if any, recovered the body and buried it, being as there were so many about that day, but I think that’s where ettrick40 needs to look. As I’ve said above, maybe the RN Museum could help with info or advice.

    ettrick40,

In your place, I would e-mail the CWGC and tell them what you’ve told us, see what they say. Go to their website, click on ‘contact us’, and under ‘Casualty & cemetery enquiries’ there is an e-mail link for the CWGC. Also ask them to give you details of who to contact re the Royal Navy side of this i.e. finding a record of the burial in the war diary of the ship concerned.

I would also contact the Royal Navy museum, but I don’t have their webaddress, or e-mail address. So you’ll have to try ‘Google’ etc.

I’d also want to have a look at the 350 sqdn Operations Record Book, at the Public Record Office, Kew, W.London.

    Hope this helps.

    Dan,

I’ve only just realised that the crest you’ve used is that of the current Bexley London Borough. The crest on AD554 would have been that of the Bexley Metropolitan Borough, which ceased to exist in 1965.

If you hold fire on the profiles of ‘BEXLEY’, I will get a copy of the old crest for you next week and post it here. I still feel that the crest on ‘BEXLEY’ is white, as I can’t see any variance in tone to indicate a different colour.

    Dan,

    What can I say 🙂

Do you think the crest on AD554 is coloured or white? I’ve always had the feeling it was the latter.

Could you do a version of AD554, with the crest in white and the rear view mirror on the side of the fuselage as per the photo of Chris in the cockpit, and another the same, but with the s/n EN893?

Chris has always said that it was EN893 that he was sitting in, though I think it’s AD554. The problem is that around the time the photo of him in the cockpit was taken, he was changing from AD554 to EN893. To me, the a/c he’s sitting in doesn’t look brand new, but a bit weathered.

AD554 was lost on the 15th August 1942, having ‘bounced’ by two Me109s whilst on a standing patrol with another 131 sqdn Spifire. By then it had been replaced as Chris Doll’s Spitfire, by the new ‘BEXLEY’ Mk Vb EN893.

The pilot of AD554 on it’s last flight was Sgt John Luxford, below, who was aged 22 at the time of his death.
