    Great photos indeed Dave.
The Beech is an 18 not a 17 though (the 17 is a Staggerwing) An interesting scheme on it.

Ju52’s are indeed nice to see… best moment was at Frankfurt a few years back when all 3 Swiss and then the DLH Ju.52’s took off one after another!
Oh the sight and the sound!
Would like to do Gatow some time in the future… Saw some of the stuff that was there when still RAF Gatow… Varsity sticks in my mind – sure there was one or two more types…

The Ju.52 is listed as being there in the book but it is a Portugese one.
“PAF3216 was presented to Museum by the Portugese Government in 1973.”
Was recently completed after another(?) restoration.

Could the Sea Fury have been G-AGHB / WH589?

As to what was at the disply it doesn’t say 🙁

There is, however, an aerial view of part of the ’75 show with the Rothmans Pitts (5), Dewoitine D26, Swordfish, Sea Fury, Chipmunk and a Dakota. (Pic ref IWM MH20239)

    Don’t know when I first went there… I was only 2 in ’73!!!

    Duxford opening

    According to the guide…

“…In Spetember 1971 the Imperial War Museum, which was seeking a suitable place to store its growing reserve collectionof aircraft, was granted, throught the Department of teh Environment, the temporary use of one of the hangars. By the middle of 1973 there were ten aircraft at Duxford under various stages of restoration or preparation for display.”

It also states that Oct 73 saw an air day presented by the Museum and East Anglian Aviation Society.
the fourth air day organised by DAS in July 76 attended by 45,000 people meant they were able “…to open the site to the public for the first time on a regular daily basis.”

The Concorde and TSR are not in the guide!

One of my prized items of various stuff I’ve collected over the years is a copy of the 21st Anniversary Brochure of the formation of the ATC.
Pure nostalgia… And all way before my time.
Got it from a collectors shop for a couple of quid a few years back.

    Further clairfication.

The fly-in will be going on BUT on 30 (THIRTY) visitors will be accepted (it’s PPR anyway).

We will not be able to flaunt this as the AVDC enforcing officer will be there. (how will he cope for fuel emergencies or airfiled business flights?)

Anyway, We (the VAC) are encouraging members to write to the council asking them to re-assess the matter for the rest of this year and for 2005, especially in light of the events we’ve held there over the last few years. A special meeting is to be held to discuss this matter at TW on the 17th.

I hope we are succesful in this matter.

I managed to fly i.e. pilot, a Stearman and an Auster (with a cadet in the back!) during my time in the cadets as well as a passenger in a Tiger Moth, Flex-wing microlight, a Robin DR300, a Hughes “500” and the BAC 1-11.:D

I also managed to be a CWO and Lord Lt. cadet (and got formally introduced to Her Majesty Queen – how scary was that!);)

But going back a bit here chaps to around the start of this thread…

I’ve been chatting about this thread with my dad (ex-Flt Lt RAFVRT) and he seems to think, and I vaguely recall being told that the guy who played “John” joined up but later killed in an accident. All very sad. 🙁 I think I heard it at 5AEF but it was a long time ago for such a small snippet of information.

    Horsa

Think it’s the one shot landing in something so large that prays on my mind…

Theory would be the same as for a small one (say T.21) but…
    😮

Yes I liked that one too… They (the models) were a connection to something / some types I knew I’d never see – although you cannot guarntee that these days… amazing what types you see now that were not about 10-20-30 years ago.

Would love to see a full sized Horsa pulled by something appropriate.:)

I agree the staff can make or break it. We were lucky we had at least one who was VERY pro aviating.

    Fast jet stuff – fantastic.
Liked the airbourne drill!! (and the blues!)
We only did air-to-air in fully seated Tristars.
