    Olds Cool

I’ve no doubt of the fun you have the events…

I feel for you as to what you don’t get today as against what we had in the mid 80’s to early 90’s. I was envious then of what previous generations got during their service.

The “Next Generation” tag they attached a couple of years back seems to be a bit of an attempt to make it seem better and disguise the reductions…

How can you manage to pull off the interest if you only get 5 rounds a year and one flight? (not that I was into shooting – it was fun but not my No.1)

Due to an injury Coltishall camp, which I got whilst there, saw me end up helping out on the range for the cadet shooting and as such managed 70 rounds in 3 days!!!

Managed a go on the .303 during my time too. God that hurt if you got the positioning wrong!!

Yes I do. I thought the name was just because of the collection of the types gathered there.

Also remember the Beverly outside and the ASR boat was where the milestones bit is now.

And wasn’t there a silver Canberra with pointed nose or am I thinking of somewhere else…?

Will try to dig out the guide and see if I can get the floor plan to scan…

I remember those displays too. Utterly facinating.

I have a copy of the guide book from that time and probably the same copy of the RAF year book! – I seem to remember the article. I also recall seeing a photo of the (at the time) proposed museum at Hendon with a model of a Whitley outside too!!:D

Also the Grahame White building was on the same site then… (didn’t like it when I went there on the 19th Dec last year – very sterile/false where as I find/found the original hall fine despite the carpeted walkways)

My paternal grandmother lives in the Kenton/Harrow area and so with my dad’s interest in aeroplanes it was a common point of call when down there for the weekend (along with LHR thanks to the 140 bus!)

I agree it all seemed more joined throughout the visit in those days.

Be interesting to see how they get the Valiant out to Cosford… With all the moving about recently you’d have thought they might have done it then…?

I went to Region competitions with Air Rec (team and individual)… I remember near the end of my “service time” the increasing response of “It’s an aeroplane/helicopter” to the quizzes… So annoying to be unreal.

One flight per year is attrocious… but no doubt a sign of the times. In saying that in our last squadron cadets flew more in civilian aircraft than military. The new CO when he took over said that the cadets had no business with aeroplanes… Needless to say I gave up being a CI at this point.

I was told on the Coltishall camp back in 92 that the average/allocated number rounds per cadet on the L-98 was just 12 per year!

I’ve noticed that alot of our local squadrons are almost shunning aviation completely preferring to do “Adventure Training”…:(

Also that at some aeroplane events they are wearing the greens rather than the blue uniform. It’s hard to see cadets out and about (other than at official parades) in the blue uniform.
    😡

Is it me or are the cadets doesn’t seem to be the avenue into the Services as it used to be and appears to be drifting away from the service…

Couldn’t agree more. Do we(as a generalism here) complain about all the football on TV when there are other sports/interests that are given little or no time and when they are are treated shoddily?

One of the worst NIMBY things I read was when I lived in Bicester.
An elderly couple who’d lived in the area for years moved to Caversfield (under the approach/departure to the usual runway at the airfield) and THEN complained about the noise!!! f***ing muppets! buy a house next to an active airfield and what do you expect!!!
I also recall that after West Malling closed the poeple missed the planes and hated the constant noise of the lorrys… Served ’em right.

    Sorry folks rant over.

Update to the root cause of this…

Apparently the bloke in question complained to the owner of the airfield about his house being buzzed a while back and instead of a reasonable response was told to go forth and multiply or something of the ilk. TW have a movemnt restriction on their movements as part of the planning permission (although hardly adhered to I understand) and this guy is getting his revenge. He’s looked at the Plan Perm and is using it by all accounts.

I still do not condone his actions or attitude but feel that we are now suffering for someone’s poor attitude to a problem that should have been handled differently… (although typical of the person in Q’s behaviour)

Be advised the VAC are taking steps to deal with this problem and will be there on the 17th regardless…

    Fantastic thread!:D 😎 😀

I did only 3 UK camps:
Abindgon 1987 (photo in front of the Vulcan),
Stafford 1988 (photo behind “Thompson” block)
and Coltishall 1992 (photo by what ever was on the gate… Can’t remember despite being the most recent!!)

I did do TWO Gatow camps 1989 (the wall came down in November ’89) and 1990 almost exactly 12 months later…

We did visits to the TTTE at Cottesmore, RAE Bedford of course RAFM Hendon (where in uniform we marched between the buildings to appreciative glances – wouldn’t get them to day??)

My Venture that took me, myself and I aloft for those 5 minutes was ZA633 on 05/03/88… (yeah crowded with the three of us in there!!)

The only 6AEF mahine I flew was WP805 whilst on camp.
Managed quite a few types and most military helicopters in service at the time with the exception of the Gazelle…

Also did an overseas flight… 8:30 total time in a Hercules to Gibraltar.

Oh to be that young again

We also went to various aiurshows and I remember going non uniform to Farnborough and whilst stuck in the queue to get out we all got out of the minibus and did an impromptu drill display for something to do. We finished to a round of applause!

Must try to get access to a scanner to add my camp photos and the like…

    Happy days eh?
I’m also getting odd looks because of my stupid nostalgic grin on my chops!
I was with 5(F) and although we had little contact with the real 5F we did manage a bit of a photo call with their Tornado at Bournmouth Airshow in 91 where we were helping out. Long trip from Northampton for that weekend but well worth it especially the Sea King and Lynx jollys.
I miss the old Ventures too… That was with 616VGS at Henlow. Managed to have a chat once with the new owners of one of “my” Ventures a few years back…
I even miss drill… how sad is that?

Glad to know she’s still going well… Only flew once in her. “My” usual one was WB652 now G-CHPY.

Even though 5AEF was “my” AEF I never managed to “do” the Husky… Managed an Auster during my time though.

If I remember rightly at least one of the crew was a member and came in that capacity!!
We marshalled an AA Dak at Abingdon a couple of years back… It was odd as I’d marshalled(?) the autogyro earlier the same day… Talk about extremes!!
Got your list thanks. it was a good refresher… it is so easy to possibly let complacency creep in.

I was only subjected to “John” and his film.

I miss flying in Chippies… but thanks to being a spacey managed various types and some great flying.

ONe of the best was laying on the floor of a BAC1-11 with a map peering over the edge of the window and working out our track… AFTER we’d done a T&G at Marham and seeing all those lovely Victors!

I did hear that Ced had rocket looped a Canberra once…

I left Cadets on my 23rd Birthday never really left and in fact became a CI for a couple of years but left about 2 years back now… It’s not the same now… When I left they still used the Chippie so never experienced the joy (?) of the Tutor. I do miss those days… A lot of fun.

Working as a civil servant I’ve ofen been tempted to go for an ATC staff job but have never quite managed it for one reason or another…

Yep guilty as charged… It is the one now in Spain. It was taken at Finmere… It’s there because I had it loaded on this PC and altered it accordingly to fit.

Yes again… One of my most memorable flights was with Ced. It was my THIRD of the day!!!! He performed a whole display routine because he was “…a bit rusty and want to practice…” To this day I’ve no idea what we did apart from being utterly rotated about all three axis… And we finished higher than we started…
Must try to get copy of the book.

So nice to hear from other nice people and ex-spaceys…;)

    Enjoy
