“Not as unusual as it should be though which tends to support the earlier comment that Tornado maint is a nightmare.”
Like Mike,I’ve been under the impression that the Tornado can have some maintenance issues, but from what I’ve heard it’s largely a problem with the F.3 fleet. With Eurofighter’s entry into service imminent, the rumour is that there’s a reluctance to spend time and money on the old F.3’s,so they patch ’em up and send them out again when some deeper and/or more expensive work would really be the order of the day.I’m not stating this as fact, just what I’ve heard, and it would be nice to be proved wrong.
“I’m not sure of the Sea Fury though.”
IIRC,about 18 months ago the Zuccolis’ machine received the attentions of Ellsworth Getchell, who operates a Centaurus-powered SeaFury in the States. The Zuccoli machine’s engine was run and u/c retraction tests etc were carried out,but the aircraft wasn’t flown for whatever reason. As far as I know, the aircraft hasn’t flown since Guido was killed.
I suppose it could be the Friedkin TF-51,which was dismantled during the last month.Beyond that I’m at a loss.
“Agreed with you all the way up to the point where you mentioned the Tornado
What a crock of poo to lumber our airforce with.
Moggy “
Choose your words carefully Moggy old chap (a new concept for ya I know, but hey…;) :D).By ‘Tornado’,I presume you mean that ‘thing’ that has an ‘F’ for fighter as part of it’s designation, which I would agree is not quite what it should be (to put it politely). Get Eurofighter into service ASAP!
The GR models on the other hand are extremely well liked and capable from what I’ve heard and I doubt there are many who fly or work on them who would hear a bad word said about them.
From all that I’ve heard, the A-5 is still undergoing restoration here in the UK,although ofcourse with the secrecy surrounding Mr.Allen’s collection it could be that she’s moved on already.
I think Allen’s collection is the equivilant of the old Warbirds of Great Britain organisation, where the aircraft were kept primarily for thier financial value and were kept out of the public gaze.I seriously doubt whether we’ll ever see a museum or flying collection established for Allen’s machines.
Whooohoo, nice one Leah, congratulations! 😎 I’m guessing it won’t be long before we see you charging about the place in a certain P51…? 😉
The one that always sticks in my mind is the TFC P38 being thrown around by Stephen Grey at Legends ’94.I’d always been lead to believe that the ’38 was little better than a bomber in terms of it’s performance and agility-boy was the myth dispelled that day!Upward rolls, half loops, high speed passes and one or two rolls where the wing tips nearly cut a groove in the turf!
Those were the days when I was carefree and simply enjoyed the spectacle,I don’t think I could bear to watch that routine repeated now, especially in the light of what happened to ‘Cutie a couple of years later. 🙁
Our good friend Germaine Greer perhaps?? 😀
Hi Mike,
She was moved to YAM a couple of years ago from the museum at Norwich airport where she’d been on outdoor display for quite a while.I’d suggest that the majority of the wear and tear you can see in the picture is from her days at Norwich. She’s now been classed as a ‘Benchmark Airframe’ by BAPC and the plan as of about 18 months ago was to find her a permenant home indoors.
Sorry I don’t have anything more up to date than that…
Hi Tom,
I’m pretty certain she had some sort of prang a couple of years ago, something like a groundloop.I’ve not heard of her returning to flight yet, although ofcourse she may have done.
Thanks for the corrections on the Zuccoli machine,I couldn’t remember if she was a single or two seater.
Here she is landing at Legends a few years ago.She was daubed up in a dark green uppers/light blue undersides Luftwaffe scheme for the film, and also carried a drop tank under each wing.
It was a Fiat G.59,a Merlin powered fighter from the early post-war years(A design which started life as the G.55 with a DB605 during the war years.)
The one in the film is a rare two-seater based in Italy, and I believe is the only one flying (there’s another in Australia which hasn’t been flown for a number of years). It had some sort of serious prang a couple of years ago,so I’m not sure if she’s currently airworthy. She used to attend Flying Legends quite regularly in the late 90’s.
“turn the tv over!”
Nah,don’t do that! The picture will be upside down and it’ll be even worse…
…and I’m surprised a certain someone hasn’t proposed to paint her on a certain Piper Colt…;)
I’m 99.9% certain the the USAAF never operated B25’s in the UK and the silver doped fabric would count out an A20 as all UK-based ones were camouflaged as far as I can recall.
