“Ant, forgive me for being slightly pedantic on this, but I wouldn’t leave it as it is as that would cause deterioration over time. I’d preserve it in ‘as found’ condition instead, carrying out whatever work is necessary to ensure the aircraft’s survival for future generations to appreciate.”

I’m in full agreement with you on that Steve, I meant that a wreck should be left ‘as found’ as you put it rather than left to rot.
As for the point about the 109 on it’s belly at Duxford,I think it looks pretty good, although I may be alone on that one! It brings the aircraft down to eye level so you get a much better view of the aircraft. As for whether it should’ve been restored, then yes I think it should’ve been. What arrived at IWM wasn’t really much to look at,and I applaud the IWM’s efforts to conserve the original paintwork.ARCo are doing a great on-going restoration job on her at the moment, those cowlings look none too easy to fabricate!

Wow,wow and wow again! Interesting to see that row of Swift fuselages, looks like they never flew.I know a number of Swift orders were cancelled when a substantial number were on production lines in various places (even Shorts in Belfast were building a few), so I’m guessing these are some of those??
Oh if only they’d saved that Buckmaster!:(

    Hi Flood,
Yeah I know alot of mud can be a bit of a bummer,I was just thinking/hoping out loud that there might be summat worth recovering.
I remember seeing something on Discovery channel about an RAAF recovery team trying to raise the wreck of a Spit Mk.V which had ditched in a Croc-infested river in NW Australia in 1943/44. Even though half the Spit was above the surface, they still couldn’t get it out of the mud and ended up having to cut it into sections to raise it 🙁 . Couldn’t help thinking it would’ve been better off left where it was in hindsight.

Tony Dyer posted summat on the forum about that auction just a day or two after it happenned. He seemed to think the Typhoon cockpit had gone to a French buyer.

Great news on the Connie Roger, I’d been worried that the Swiss project wasn’t going anywhere when things went quiet about a year ago, good to see it back on track!
As the for the Spit Vs Connie argument,I’m not gonna start throwing teddies about it-they’re both simply gorgeous. The P38 is one of my all time favourites, and the Connie is in many ways like a giant P38-can’t go wrong! 😎

“Thanks Roger, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a static display that has that ability. It makes for a great picture.”

The Hurricane Mk.1 replica at Tangmere has an electric motor built into the nose to spin the prop. Haven’t seen it first hand, but I seem to remember a documentary about the Battle of Britain a few years ago which used this replica as a ground running prop for the reconstructions.I remember it didn’t turn half as quick as the one on that Spit seems to-hope they’ve got the chocks firmly in place!

Cheers Flood, just what I was after. 😎 Sounds like there’s a fairly substantial amount of her still in there, makes you wonder if it wouldn’t be worth recovering.

    Hi Bruce,
Staying with the topic of events at the museum,am I right in thinking there’s some sort of event planned to mark the 60th anniversary of the Vampire’s first flight??
Good to hear the Mossie is coming along nicely, looking forward to the pics.

PS. I’ll get down to London Colney one day soon, haven’t been in years.

“You will remember the Spar change on the Lancaster – well that had the same problem.

Now, who wants to pay for a spar change on a Shack?? Any offers??”

I was under the impression that the AEW2 Shacks had thier mainspars replaced in the early 80’s,so the fatigue life shouldn’t be a problem.
There was an article about the re-spar of the Lanc which stated that this was only possible because of the experience gained in the re-spar work which had previously been carried out on the Shackleton.
    Any truth in this?

Wow!Thanks for those BC,she’s coming on beautifully. The tail turret is stunning. Are there still some perspex panels to go or is it how it was originally?I know quite a number of Lancs had panels removed from the tail turret to reduce glare and reflections, not seen it done with Hali’s before though.

“When I was in the Navy we had to watch crash and burn movies of mechaincs and pilots who had their head where it did not belong and usualy resulted in someone dead or handicapped.”

I agree it can be useful to see these things and that it is right to show them for thier educational value. It seems the key question that we come back to is whether Aeroplane is the right place to publish the picture and what thier motives were for doing so.It’s largely a magazine for enthusiasts rather than pilots or engineers,so to my mind the educational point is largely invalid.I still think that it was published for the sake of ‘gaup factor’ rather than educational value, and I don’t think it should’ve been done.
To go back to my original post,it wasn’t my intention to start up a debate on whether it was right or not,but to ask people who thought it was wrong to write to them about it so that they didn’t go unnoticed.

“Get over it! Those types of pictures serve to remind us of the ever constant danger of flying and to remain vigalant maintaining and constructing Aircraft. Check, Recheck and tripple check maintenance items. It’s to bad the gentelman bought the farm but not to learn from it is the real tragedy.”

    Hi Wrenchbender,
I understand your point about learning the lessons of an accident, but I still don’t feel that such a picture has a place in a magazine. The same lessons can be learnt from the official reports into the incident, and there is no need to publish such a picture for the public to gaup at.The aviation community is a well connected one,and surely if there are lessons to be learnt then they will be passed on via the usual channels, rather than relying on a picture in a magazine.
I would also say that vigilance and respect for the possible dangers of flying an aeroplane are forefront in the minds of those who fly them and that the majority need no reminding of these things by the aviation press.
As for the Lindbergh website showing pictures of the crash, they should know better.Again I would say that it was a move to increase the number of hits to thier site than anything else. Respect should be shown for those who’ve died and the bereaved.

    Hi Graeme,
From what I’ve been told,it seems she was being prepared for flight testing at one point, but unfortunately a number of faults in the early stages of her restoration were discovered and she’s had to be taken apart again to rectify the problems. She was at Earls Colne airfield in Essex last I heard about 18 months ago, although she may well have moved on.
