Interesting stuff Snapper.I’ve been up to the IWM at Lambeth a number of times, and I always take a certain amount of time to give R6915 a proper look over. She’s a true BofB veteran and IMHO is the best museum-bound Spit anywhere, with her original late-war camouflage with all the untouched wear and tear. Just a shame they had to cut holes in her and string her up! πŸ™
Do you have any more info on Noel Agazarian??I read somewhere that he was killed in early July of 1940,but unless there is an amazing coincidence of names, your records show this to be wrong.I seem to remember he was from Yemen,is this correct?

If there’s any truth to the story,I can’t help feeling that it might be better to display the wreck as it is,albeit carefully preserved, particularly when you consider the number of complete P40’s we have already. What’s better,a spotless rebuild that looks liek an Airfix,or a warts and all wreck with original kill markings etc?I know which one I’d go for…

“Yes, the buckling of the fuselage in front and behind the centre section suggests a heavy impact. The fairing behind the right engine was shown to be heavily crushed.”

Just a small point about how the damage occurred-buckling isn’t necessarily down to there being a ‘heavy’ impact. From the pics I’ve seen,it seems as though the Blenhiem spun through 90 degrees before coming to rest.Fuselages are not designed to take side (shear) loads and so the forces don’t have to be too great to do significant damage if the forces just happen to be going in the wrong direction. It’s possible that if she’d simply carried on in a straight line, the damage would’ve been much less.
I remember seeing pictures of the SAAF Shackleton 1716 after she crash landed in the Sahara a few years back-she’d travelled sideways for quite some distance and it was remarkable that the fuselage stayed together, despite being buckled and broken in atleast three places.
Good luck to all at ARCo,the damage seems to be serious indeed. I’d give it 18 months minimum before she’s back in the air again.

Blimey!Didn’t expect this one to go to three pages. I’m not sure I understand the debate which is going on at the moment. It seems to me that David’s point is based around the continuity of an airframe’s existance, the idea being that even if there is nothing of the original machine in 50 years’ time, then at least some of the older parts were at one time attached to the original and so are a link to the aircraft’s beginning.Correct?
If I’ve got this the right way round, then I would have to lean towards David’s point of view.I do feel there’s a difference between a machine which has appeared out of thin air with a supposedly original ID than an existing machine which has gone in for overhaul or repair and come out with a substantial amount of new parts.
This thread has actually strayed a fair distance from what I original intended. My original post was about the pro’s and cons of displaying wrecked aircraft or restoring them,so was really directed more at museum exhibits than airworthy machines. Interesting the way our posts always seem to meander from the original topic!

She was up on jacks with all sorts of bits missing around the time of Legends last month.Looks like there’s some very serious work being caried out in various areas. It’s been ongoing for more than a year now and it appears to still be in full swing.

The RAFM currently have plans to build an enormous display hall for most if not all thier large aircraft currently displayed outdoors. This will include the Vulcan, although she’ll need some serious resoration work. There was talk a few months back of transporting the Valiant up from Hendon and displaying it alongside the Vulcan and Victor in the new building, bringing the three V-Bombers together for the first time in many years.

The Spit is Mk.24 VN485.She was brought back from Hong Kong a few years ago and has been on display at Duxford since she aoppeared in the static line up at the 1998 Spitfire show.
She was in the restoration hangar at the time of Legends this year with her engine out and various other bits missing. Not sure what’s happenning to her,but it look s like restoration work rather than dismantling for transport.

Nope, not a single Buckmaster anywhere, and I don’t think there are even any substantial bits,so it’s one of those types that’s almost certain to remain ‘extinct’.
The closest thing we have to it is the Bristol Brigand fuselage with the Bristol Aero Collection at Kemble, and it’s hard to see even this valuable relic becoming a complete aircraft again. The Brigand was an important type, and I hope that something will come of this project, but as far as I know there are no wings in existance,so would be one hell of a job to restore fully.

“I agree that the IWM have done a good job with the ‘109 but given this particular airframes history, I just feel that more could/should have been done.

It is after all, a genuine Battle of Britain survivor and as I said before, there aren’t many of them buggers left.”

I agree that it would be nice to see her on her feet sometime in future. It’s been suggested that the IWM wanted her posed on her belly to meet the deadline for the BofB exhibition, the thinking being that it’s more acceptable to see an aircraft with bits missing if it’s posed like a wreck.

As for the ‘reproduction/replica’ debate, I agree with MarkV that a replica is a lookalike, either a full size model or some homebuilt like the Clive Du Cros ‘Spitfire’.A reproduction is a new example of the original machine, like the Sopwith Tripe and Bristol M.1C at Shuttleworth.
As for original bits in Spitfires,I do wonder of it is really worth restoring something like that Mk.1 which was recovered from a French beach a few years back.I would be far happier to see the original wreck than some flying reproduction with the original identity. The same goes for the rebuilding of fatal wrecks. Why build a new aircraft with the old one’s identity when you could find an identity for the reproduction which doesn’t have a fatal history? There is always the argument that the original identity is more historic,if it was a D-Day veteran for example, but when you rebuild such badly damaged machines there is often next to nothing that will be re-used,so the owners of these machines are kidding themselves IMHO when it comes to claims about how ‘historic’ the rebuilt machine is.

Erm..looks like a girl to me. Now you know where you’ve been going wrong with opposite sex lately flood πŸ˜€
Whatever the machine is,it looks fun. Can’t decide what it’s meant to be a replica of yet though…
