Well,to begin with,if I had to pick just one aircraft to save at all costs it would probably be the Swift I’ve been going on about recently.I just can’t bear to watch it deteriorate any further!
However,I realise that it’s not THE last Swift in existance,so in wider terms I’d probably go for the Blackburn Beverley at the Museum of Army Transport,or perhaps the Mk1 Victor at Duxford.
Not sure I agree about the Duxford Shackleton.True,I’d love to see her restored, but the Newark example is in remarkable nick, so if one example had to be saved I would choose that one instead.
Then there’s the Comet at Lyneham…
Thanks for those BC.I’d say they were great pics, but surelly it’s impossible to take a bad picture of a Javelin? 🙂
The chap who did the restoration work on ‘699 set up an excellent website about the restoration, and about Javelins in general.Hasn’t been updated in a while, but still well worth a browse.
Well, personally I think it’s daft that Duxford should cut down on the aviation stalls, particularly for the sake of the car-boot style junk stalls they’ve been replaced by.There’s a place for car boot sale stalls-at car boot sales! It would be a bit nuts if the aviation stallholders took over the car boot sales wouldn’t it?And yet the reverse is happenning at airshows.Ofcourse we want to encourage all sorts of folks to airshows, but that doesn’t mean that the enthusiasts should be shut out, especially when the venue is one that’s well attended by them.As I remember there were quite a few non-aviation stalls at Legends last year, and that struck me as a good balance.
There is something about an airshow that simply makes you want to go out and buy books, models etc.Perhaps you want to find out more about something that’s been mentioned in the commentary, or perhaps you want to build a model of the machine you’ve been most impressed by at the display. For me atleast, the aviation stalls are an integral part of a display, and to lose them would mean losing some the show’s atmosphere.
Having said all this,I realise we need to satisfy the folks who come to the shows who aren’t really interested in many of the planes.Let’s face it,a huge chunk of the crowd, even at Duxford, come to see The Reds and maybe a Tornado.I’m not saying ‘junk’ stalls have no place at a show,I simply think that a better balance of stalls could be reached.
“A slightly different angle shot of the Mustang take off”
Yak11,you’re one lucky g*t! :p Great shot of ‘The Doll’,sadly not a view I’m likely to see in person! 🙁
Beautiful shots Moggie!Looks like Damien has some stiff opposition at last…;)
Nice pics Kev,thanks for sharing them. The Seahawk doesn’t look too bad,but the Vixen looks like she could do with a bit of tarting up.
Wouldn’t happen to have taken any pics of the Javelin would you Kev? 😉
Who did the Tiffy cockpit go to Tony?Is this another one for your collection per chance??
Although being beautifully restored, the Maltese Hurri is only being rebuilt to taxiable condition. As someone has mentioned, the wreck this restoration is based on was recovered from the sea bed a few years ago.Unfortunately, exposure to salt water seriously affects the condition of the structure, and so generally a wreck recovered from the seabed can’t be brought back to operational condition. The guys at the museum have worked wonders in getting this aircraft to the condition it’s now in.
Beautiful pictures Kenneth 🙂 ‘ME is certainly in beautiful shape, I only wish we could see her again over here. The only time I saw her she was static at Legends ’95 with mechanical trouble,so have never seen her fly :(.How many hours do the collection’s aircraft do each year?Do they do any overseas display work?
Interesting to see that Egyptian fighter, although I have to say it’s news to me that it even existed!
Thanks again for the pics, interior shots especially. 🙂
Hi Ashley,
I don’t have that records management thingy either, but I’m gonna give it a throw anyway. In a way I’ve been recording and filing and researching for years,as testified by the size of my aviation library!
I was wondering if you’d got my message, thanks for that.No immediate rush for a reply,so no worries. 🙂
Looks like I’m up against formidable opposition then…
Excellent pics Kenneth, thank you very much for them, much appreciated! Poor old ‘BB,that conrod doesn’t look at all nice :(. How did you manage to get access to the collection??
Cheers Anne,my application is most definately on it’s way! 🙂
“Same bloke has also heard the Dakota is U/S. Is this true?”
All Dakotas are American DH,thought you’d know that! 😉 ho ho ho…sorry folks,it is late afterall!
Good old CAA…
I know I’ve already had a say on this topic, but I thought I ought to point out one very important rule the CAA have on paintjobs.
Alot of the arguments here seem to based on the idea that CVIX could’ve been painted in a ‘psuedo RN scheme’ rather than going the whole hog with this commercial paintjob.I’m afraid the CAA would disagree! They don’t like these half and half schemes which you often see in America or Europe, only something entirely authentic or modern will do,not a mixture of both.
So really the question should be whether you like the present paintjob or whether you think they could’ve designed something less garish, more flatterring etc etc.The choice is either to have her commercially marked and flying,or authentically marked and static/abroad.
