Sorry no pic it was on TV and I didn’t record it.
I dredged up this old thread from a year ago while searching
for info on NX739 myself.
It’s mentioned that it was used for camerawork on The Dam Busters
– is this the mysterious “fifth” Lancaster sometimes mentioned on
the net involved with this film classic???
Jonathan Falconer’s excellent 2005 book makes no mention at all
of it which makes me wonder if its use in the film is just a myth???
“DC-3: Southern Skies Pioneer” by B. Lockstone and P. Harrison / 2000.
Amazing book dealing with the military & civil histories of the
DC-3 in New Zealand. Includes appendix aircraft lists!!! –
the favourite of any aviation book collector.
Thanks for that…I see the msn is given as “005” which could
be up to four different airframes in the A75 production run.
Seems this Stearman is bit of a mystery…?
Why didn’t they make the hanger bigger!
but, are the N**** numbers US civil serials?
An obscure topic, be interesting to follow this thread to see what further information is known on the topic.
Hi, yes I started this thread to gather info / data on a Tora! feature I am developing for a magazine.
50 years this year since the film was released.
I have discovered during research that N-numbers were assigned to the T-6s in Japan that were used for filming of the Japanese scenes – these are N6520 thru N6539 (some noted in above reply), assigned Dec68 thru Jun69, this lines up with the filming in Japan. The numbers were published in the FAA civil register for Jan 1969 as reserved by the USAF MAA Group?, whoever they are? There were 5 Kate conversions and 3 Zero conversions with the remaining T-6s as standard except for a prop spinner and 3-bladed propeller. Most were T-6G variant rebuilds with, yes, FY 51 serials in the 17xxx grouping.
All JASDF / JMSDF T-6s were retired in 1968 just in time to be used in the movie.
The JASDF serials appear to start at their 52- mark but I cannot line these up to the USAF ones which is what I am ultimately keen to find out.
I’m keen to line up these 8 JSADF serials to the original USAF FY 51 serials:
52-0028, 52-0030, 52-0035, 52-0058, 52-0117, 52-0137, 72-0158, 72-0175
Many thanks for the replies and leads to follow.SB.

C-119 looks like it might be ANG by the livery.
This would make sense but I can’t find anything anywhere to support it. Figures seem to vary widely.
Hello,
Looks like we have some fellow IARC readers here!
I’ve been learning to read these cards for my book on the C-82 and have been using Robert A. Mann’s excellent book on the subject.
I’ve tried to email Mr. Mann on many occassions but he doesn’t reply?
Not to change the subject on this thread to much but the C-82 had many RT and RM codes to depots and AFBs in their record cards.
I have acquired all of them except for the 16 or so that were not scanned to microfilm due to being missing – all were w/o in Europe during
assignment to the 60th TCG.
Archie Defantie at Maxwell informed me that a “deployment” is a unit assignment that lasts less than a year away from its parent unit?
Is this correct as I’ve decoded 180 cards with this rule. Mann’s book doesn’t mention it.
Thanks.
Attached are the cards for 45-57768. Yes it was in transit to the US for retirement to Kelly AFB. I do think it was with the7559th
when the accident happened. There are about 16 C-82 accidents that occurred in the England and Europe that the US never
recorded details on and some of the IARCs are even missing! Thanks for the details on the ARS assignments, yes these are
recorded by me and were assigned as stated above.
