It looks like a duckling from front (a beautiful duckling 🙂 )
Duckling indeed , but i was thinking more like an “angry duckling from hell” ( given what the aircraft is suposed to do) …In fact , it would be awesome if they will paint such artwork on it . I actually looked for something along those likes on the net , but couldn’t find anything eye-catching.
So yeah, if any of you actually know the folks from Voronezh , maybe you can suggest them this idea for artwork on those Su-34s… “the angry duckling from hell” , red evil eyes , holding blood soaked cutting objects etc( like a sickle !) …you get the point .:D
Btw, i claim the copyright (c) on this idea .:p
Found this on paralay.com, can’t see any link as to where it came from , credits go to whoever owns this picture 🙂

Thanks.:)
Can i ask , what is on the tail boom of some of these new Su-34?( like the above grey one red 10 f.e.)
Example:
http://russianplanes.net/ID60614
I thought they’re chaff and flare dispensers , but they seem to be on only one side …any ideas? does it have to do with the new generator ? or maybe it’s only for the EW configured airframes(maybe a heat exchanger of some sort)?
Thanks.
A significant proportion of their fleet is in service on paper only!
That sums it up. Imho those bewildering numbers are ridiculous. Gorssly inflated to make them look more threatening than they are.
Wow, looks much better in this pic! The whole thing being grey would look even better, but would not help with the whole blurring with the sky buisness.
Looks like we were fooled by the camera/lighting etc. when we first saw the sort of “dark blueish ” colour few days back.
Btw.

Grey Su-34 anyone ? 😎

Tow more Su-34s delivered to Voronezh
http://www.armstrade.org/includes/periodics/news/2011/1222/132510898/detail.shtml
I’ve read a bit of news that says PAK-DA should fly by/in 2020, with deliveries to start in 2025.
Well, one can argue that they have already started suporting 4th gen fighters for longer than planned (since the IOC has been pushed at the very least 5 to 7 years) .
Think i said it before, concurrency COULD have worked ( even if it proved not to be a terribly good idea) if LM delivered , but they did not. Apart from delays caused by faults within the aircraft , they couldn’t produce them on schedule aswell, if i’m correct.
It seems the thing the Congress was “scared of” was having all these hundreds of immature F-35 built, according to initial LRP plans, then at the end of SDD , have them all brought back and stripped down and altered as needed!
I don’t know if put on balance, the cost of having all these F-35s altered as needed is below or ABOVE the costs for further supporting the 4th gen fighters in the same timeframe… maybe that’s one of the rationales they followed.
Besides, even if they would have sticked with the initial LRIP plans , you need something that is safe enough and has some rellevant capability beyond what the 4th gen fighters have, to justify replacing them with immature F-35s. But you saw the list of issues the F-35s face at the moment right? You can’t start replacing F-16 , F/A-18 and AV-8 with an aircraft in that state, isn’t it?
third will be here earlier than fourth will have maiden flight
but ‘earlier’ doesn’t mean ‘soon’ in context
Thanks Flateric.
Any chance of even a little hint of what this big surprise from Sukhoi will be ? Or at least when we should expect it (since it’s been delayed) Anything , anything you wish to share .:)
IYO, what would it cost to keep 3000+ 4th gen fighters flying (plus the associated increased pressure on IFR, escort, etc assets) for the 8-10 added years that it would take to complete SDD?
Now compare that cost to increased concurrency costs. Which one is higher?
By the look of things with barely 20% of testing done, and continuous (even if not catastrophic ) problems , and the continual push of the IOC towards the 2020s, it seems that not only they end up paying for concurrency , but also for the 8 -10 years as you say to keep the legacy fighters online!
Logically, goven the history of the programme , it is very unlikley that they are NOT going to find more problems which will lead to more delays , more money to be spend to fix them, in the 80% of flight testing left, and even more than that for structural testing.
I’d be surprised if they won’t push the IOC again at least one more time in the next few years.
Btw the rising cost of concurrency and the delays suffered by the programme must be considered against the potential cost of keeping those legacy fighter up and running since the first time the IOC was pushed forward and the delays started ( ie SWAT). Actually, i’m not familiar with the initial planned IOC for the 3 variants when the F-35 was selected in 2001 , was it something like 2010? Recently the B has been delayed from 2012 to 2014/2015 , and the other two pushed up to 2018 for F-35A( from 2016), correct? (can’t remember for the C right now).
In this context , it will be intersting to see what the japanese will get and when (most likely the initial aircraft will be at an austere standard, and maybe even not up to full spec re avionics, fatigue life, etc .)
Anyway, we’ll see.:)
That’s a stupid PS.(the colour i meen)
Aparently two new Su-34s arrived at Baltimor.
http://www.vesti.ru/doc.html?id=665590&cid=17
I initially thought they speak about the two “aubergines” ,as someone put it ( the two Su-34s with the funky cammo :p). Are they?
To our russian speaking friends, what is Groomi saying here ? Something about the third prototype arriving in Moscow “soon” ?
