CWH Museum Twitter feed confirms that it’s 3pm UK time:
“@salamara @CWHM Take -off is 10am Canadian time and 3pm UK time 🙂 #BomberTour14 #Lanc2UK”
It was too far south of me to determine anything more than it was a Dakota with invasion stripes…
As I type, a Spitfire has just flown right above me, heading west across Kenley/Old Coulsdon… and around 5 mins later, what appears to be the same Dakota has just flown south of me heading east…
I’m in the Valley, and thought I heard a Merlin towards Kenley, then I saw the Dakota again.
And she’s just going around again as I type!
I’m glad I’m not the only forumite in Caterham, and I saw the Dakota too. Does anyone know which one it was, as I know the BBMF weren’t flying. I’m wondering if it’s the one that lives at East Kirkby, as I guess it was flying anyway at the airshow there?
Thanks! She’s just flown over again but, although I did have my glasses on this time, I still couldn’t be sure if it was the Classic Air Force one. I remember her serving with BBMF and is one of my favourite aircraft types.
Thanks again for the information.
Sorry, couldn’t see – didn’t have time to put my glasses on, but the shape and sound seemed right for a Dove/Devon.
I could have sworn that I saw a DH Dove, or similar, fly over Caterham at around 10:15 this morning – looking as though it had flown out of Biggin Hill. Was I dreaming, or is this likely and, if so, does anyone know which aircraft it was?
I’m afraid I have to ask – is the Gnome helicopter engine for a small chopper?
Thanks Guys. I’ve finally got around to joining the PPRUNE forum and asking this question on the Military Aircrew forum, so we’ll see what happens. I’d also be really grateful to Amarok if he could check with his brother. Any little clue might help. Thanks again and a Happy New Year to all.
Hi Macca!
I have just joined the Forum and discovered it by putting in Sid Parlato’s name. I met him when I was a small child shortly before he was killed. My father Flt.Lt Dai Thomas was his navigator on forty five missions with 139/627 Pathfinder Squadron flying the PPF Mosquito. I have a couple of pictures, an article from the book “The Wooden Wonder” and my fathers logbook. I am planning to put all this on the internet soon. The RNZAF museum sent me other articles that you probably have. My private email is: thomas664@btinternet.com I live in London. If you send me your telephone number I will call you. Best Wishes !
Mike Thomas

I’m sure you know that your great uncle was attached to 1690 BDTF at RAF Metheringham at the time of his sad loss. What you may not know is that this Unit’s CO at the time was another New Zealander – None other than Les Munro – one of only three surviving veterans of the famous Dambusters raid. I believe he still lives in NZ and must have known your great uncle, as the BDTF was a small unit. Incidentally, about 30 years ago I recovered (and took to a now-defunct local air museum) a large piece of what I believe to be the Lancaster (called “Nick the Nazi Neutraliser”) which hit your great uncle’s aircraft. The records cite the location as “Asholt” but it is actually “Ash Holt” near the village of Blankney. I hope this helps. I also have a couple of other bits of information about your great uncle, which I’d be happy to email to you if they would help. All the best. Andrew Clark
