Smirky, sorry for my careless mistake, but why are you so sure that it’s not worth contacting
the Institution?
Is it worth contacting the Institute of Mechanical Engineers?
Two RAF marked Chipmunks over Worthing on Saturday. Made my day!
I have an annual reminder in my phone and computer diary. Some people think I’m sad, but “Lest we forget”.
Can anyone provide links to sources, or better still post copies, of close-up photos, drawings or official reports relating to the catapult system used with the Avro Manchester. Anything that shows details of the rails, trolleys, attachment mechanisms etc. would be most useful. Basically anything other than the overview photos in magazines as this is for a detailed CGI project.
Thanks
I have found a scanned copy of an article from an engineering magazine about the restoration of the catapult at Harwell. If this is useful, please pm me your email address and I will senda copy to you.

I seem to remember seeing something to do with this at LAHC, East Kirkby, but I could be wrong.
I’m not a lawyer, but I have some understanding of contract. I believe that one party has to offer something in exchange for something (called consideration, but not necessarily money) in exchange. I know nothing about the background to this awfully sad situation, but it seems that the volunteers are making an offer to restore an aircraft in exchange for ???????? Unless the other party involved is offering something in return, I wouldn’t have thought that a legally binding contract can be made – and the volunteers would have to agree that the consideration was of sufficient value. The other party might argue that the consideration was the offer of accommodation, etc, and this might be valid, but there are other things about this which seem very uncertain to me, and I wonder whether there might be a lawyer on here might be able to provide free legal advice to the volunteers and therefore help them to fight this ridiculous situation on a more equitable basis. It’s just a thought………..
Oh, and before anyone suggests it, by ‘unearthed’ I don’t mean removed from a secret underground bunker!
Cheers, Twin Otter.
I still live in the hope that a complete ‘development’ engine may be unearthed, but I know that’s extremely wishful thinking!
Sorry Cees – I’ve just looked properly and found out for myself!
The rafm have 3 as far as I am aware….I have seem 2 at Stafford and there is the 1 they have out on loan. They are all recoveries with a pair from the same Manchester but not sure about the third.
I seem to remember seeing an article (with a photo) in the Lincolnshire Echo which described the recovery of two Vulture engines and guess it would have been during the late Seventies or possibly early Eighties. Annoyingly, I don’t remember the location of the dig though, or anything else about it.
Cees – where is your museum please?
Thanks Pete, I had forgotten about the Scottish one, but I believe you are correct in saying that it is from the B20 prototype. So it sounds as though there are a maximum of three that are ‘intact’. Some years ago I saw some evidence (at RR Derby, I think) that a least one Vulture was used to test a contra-prop and I was wondering if any else had heard of this or any other Vulture developments.
Thank you, thank you, thank you CWH Team. To misquote Tennyson: “Tis better to have seen, loved and lost Than never to have seen and loved at all.” Have a safe journey home.
Go for it Matt! I did a 430 mile car trip on Sunday for 2nd 3 Lancs event and it was worth every inch! I will never forget it. Has Henry Royce said “the quality will be remembered after the price has been forgotten” (this may not be an exact quote, but the point is that the quality of the moment of seeing two Lancasters fly together is priceless.
I did wonder if the departure date has been put back to facilitate a possible engine swap.
