As David Isby once wrote… you can tell the difference between a Hip and a Hind after they are shot down… there is just a ple of ash and rubble with a Hip, but with a hind the basic shape remains quite distinct due to its titanium structure and armour.
Garry I never implied that Hip is more protected than Hind. All I wanted to imply was that Hip has got some armour than not at all!
The Hip is a special case due to the fact that is can be heavily armed. The same cannot be said for a Hughes 500 or jet ranger. After a 500 or JR have fired off their 16 odd rockets and blazed off 2,000 rounds of 30 cal ammo what are they going to do then? Use their rotor downwash to give the enemy chest colds?
😀 Good one!
This is laughable!!!! Last year we dutch people could hear on the news and read in the papers that India did no longer want to receive development aid and help coming from the Netherlands and other small developed countries simply because India felt that we were too small. Receiving aid from small countries could damage India’s national prestige as India feels it is becoming so superduper important that it has to behave itself arrogantly versus small nations, even if they are good willing. On the contrary, bigger countries like France could continue to donate to the benefit of the many deperately poor people in your country.
I think its good that India is shunning aid slowly and becoming Self reliant aint it!?. Or ur France example maybe those small developed countries cannot give/ support aid to larger projects as France can do.
When you had your independence and you finished your little butcher, you went the way of socialism and the mistaken policies of import substitution and heavy protectionism. You simply chose the wrong side during the cold war. Furthermore, my country emerged ravished and heavily traumatised from the WW2 at that time and was fighting a colonial war in the Dutch East Indies; so we had other things to spend our money on. In those days we even received development aid under the Marshall plan.
 When we(Indian subcontinent) got independence we were a ruined, completely famished nation.WW2??? Do u know Indian Subcontinent contributed more than double in terms of Manpower what euorope contributed
as whole in WW2??? Mistaken policies!? Ehh  !? Why we needed Protectionisim!?No according to Vaiar we should have amde our economy open
and become totally dependent on westren nations for every grain!!
Chosen wrong side!? Have u ever heard a movement called NAM!?
Just research about it!? Oh I see ur reffering to closing of ties betwen India & USSR in late 1960’s. Do u even know that this happened when westren nations just decided to turn blind eye to when China invaded India. India went to west to ask for help but did they come????? Westren people shouted on top of voice when India detonated nukes… trying to pose as white doves. But where were you people when India who had already declared its intention as Non voilence(read cutting of military) as prinicipal was Invaded by China!?
Before that India enjoyed more close ties with west. I was this hypocracy that disappointed India and Glad corrected its policy!! If today India has some industrial base or is making growth its due to farsightedness that they showed initial socialisim/ protectionisim policy.
We only retain several islands in the Caribbean that chose to stay with us, since they are so small that they cannot build a viable economy or state.
Trying to Defend colinialism….No how did then *Independence* of small East Timor becomes justified ….ehh!??
Since you took these as example and that the Navy believes that is part of the problem. The airforce could cover these areas easily, but most likelt due to interservice rivalry the Navy wants to have their own planes to do it.
So having Aircraft carrier is interservices rivalry!?? Tommorow you might say why have naval unit at all Give it taht job to airforce too ! If so tell this to USA ,France etc who maintains so!
Well, why don’t you choose to build a decent carrier right away like Jonesy also mentioned. .
Plz read about ADS progarmme
Thanks
Ahh Nice to see that IAF affirm its choice again:)

Sigh 🙁 😡 2 yrs…………
Lava,
The question here is not whether the Mi-17 has armor or not. Heck, the smaller Huey has armor too in a few places (at least the newer ones do), but would that make the UH-1 a more suitable platform for suppressive fire because it can be fitted with guns and rocket pods as compared to an Cobra? Nope. The same applies to the Hip. It’s not a better machine for suppressing enemey forces than the Hind. In fact, it’s quite inferior in that area because of its relative lack of agility, and the fact that more often than not a Hip (or Huey or Blackhawk or whatever you are talking about) will be loaded down with troops therefore making it even less agile than usual.
Phantom
Mi17 can operate in higher altitudes and hind cannot (plz I am reffering to case which happened in Kargil I earlier posted). Infact Mi17 was very successfull in straffing operations in Kargil(PS: it has also been used in very rare COIN operations too). but old Mi-17 didnt have any self protection suite
and hence only one among numerous sorties became victim to MANPADS. New IAF Mi17V if I guess is getting Israeli/Russian protection suite. The point u are reffering to holds true in plains and not so high altiudes.
PS: I thought CH-53 was more faster and agile than Apache;)
IAF chopper in Sri Lanka
To be frank buddy I dont know why the hell US govt is bent on cutting down F-22 no.?? Maybe LM itself is pushing more of JSF? Maybe LM can make more profit on selling JSF rather than F-22???
my 2 cents….
“But a Mi-17 with 2-4 rocket pods and machine gun pods are not a bad think, they may not be able to maneuver, but they sure got armour and can defend themselves against small arms fire.”
Actually they make easier targets then do the Mi-24D due to lack of armor…
The combat version of the Mi-17-1V helicopter is armed with rockets, guns and bombs, suspended on six BD3-57KRVM Bomb Racks.
The rockets are used to engage area and group targets including armored and concrete-reinforced installations. The rockets are housed in four B8V20 Pods with 20 S-8 Rockets in each. The helicopter can carry four UPK-23-250 Gun Pods with 23 mm GSh-23L Guns to engage ground and air targets. The 50-500 kg bombs also are used for visual day/night delivery on targets.
To protect the front and rear hemispheres the helicopter is armed with PKT Machine Gun with electric feed and remote fire control. Eight swivel mounts also can be installed to deliver fire from individual weapons. The helicopter can be fitted with active and passive ECM equipment to jam missile homing seekers. There are also IR suppressers installed over engine exhaust ducts.
The helicopter has armor plates fitted to protect the crew from gun and machine gun fire. Armour plates cover the floor, front and rear hemispheres, rear part of the crew cabin, weapon operator floor and cargo cabin hinged doors of the fuselage.
To enhance and widen its capabilities, the Mi-17-1V transport version is fitted with removable equipment to ensure search and rescue operations, extinguish fires, participate in parachute/training competitions and carry out aerophotography.
In addition, the helicopter can be fitted with auxiliary landing gear to land on soft ground and deep snow. It features a float system to enhance buoyancy during landing on water.
that in no way proves your point, how can you seriously say that a fighter aircraft project is the dream of the masses? You are feeling nationlistic and hurt, but the truth is the truth, you need me to give you the thousands of sources (from those very countries) saying what exactly is wrong.. China i am not to clear on, but India i can say with surety… it has improved a lot but still a LOT needs to be done… there are still a lot of people at the bottom end of human living conditions… So i’m pretty sure that survival is the number one thing on their mind. AND by the way i did not say all the people are struggling for survival , i used OR. Then the rest of the people who are middle class, hm… don’t know but most things point to the fact that it is not going to be their dream. Maybe they are concerned about it but probably not their dream. It’s not their dream of the masses even here in the west either, a few enthusiasts does not the masses make…
Why you would need to emphasize economic prosperity in your country unless you are feeling insecure i do not know.. Aeronautics is certainly not going to be the big countributor to your economy in a country the size of India or China.. there are only so many ppl. u can employ in R&D, and airplanes just dont have the widespread use of cars…. and defence stuff is a very small percentage of your population & economy. .. i’m not saying it is not important but certainly not something you bank your economic development on. anyway .. we are distracting from the thread so end of this.
Now Who said it to u that Struggling masses cannot have patriotic thoughts ??? If not learn from french revolution,Russian revolution, chinese revolution. It is these very masses that have bought revolution !. Tell an average Indian ,Chinese or Pakistani guy that this is what their country is developing and just see kind of glow he’ll have and twinkle in his eyes.
And do u even know that Arms inc is the most profitable one??
If not then learn from USA , learn from Russia, ISRAEL. This is what India & China have realised ! Visionary u must visualise that ROME CANNOT BE BUILT IN A DAY. Do u even know in today world a to have a good aerospace inc means that u must have u good electronic,IT,Mech base in the country. Now Just see how many direct & indirect employment oppurtunities it is generating ! These very technologies/Projects generate many other offspins meant for DEFENCE/NON-DEFENCE(peacefull) purposes.
On a second thought can we have a mix of both A/C say 60 Migs and 60 Mirages in this way we can keep bot the party happy and get the best of both the worlds :D, also maintanance will not be an issue since we already operate both in sufficient numbers. Just my thought
Hey 60+60 still makes 120.. 5 still remain 😀 Maybe we should also order one each Gripen, F-16,2 Rafale’s, EF too :diablo:
Note that this one was only “proposed” as well. This is a picture is a fake including a small scale model to illustrate an article. It was never built.
I do not have a picture, but this was not a VTOL plane. It was a conventional CTOL trainer project, never built. The Bréguet 121 project was selected instead (and eventually became the sepecat Jaguar E/T).
Hmmm…. couldnt make out that was fake!!
Regrding Dassault Cavalier its a VTOL plane I myself was googling once u said that to confirm and I found out this intresting PDF DOC 🙂 http://www.vstol.org/FrenchVSTOLjets.pdf
In this Doc they not only have said that its a VTOL but also has a nice photo(looks like a harrier to me!!)
Thanks
Austin I thought that IAF wanted to go in favour of single seat fighters!!
Of course Austin these aircrafts are meant to augment the Nuclear Capable aircraft strength! But will IAF go in favour of maintainence/manpower(Read 2 pilots per plane)
MIG29????
Dan_Pub any pic/ info of Dassault Cavalier and SAAB 1400 series of VTOL crafts?
