Thankyou for the post, and to those who ‘bumped’ it up.
Finished up my personal 70th Anniversary year tributes with a visit to Hendon RAF Museum yesterday,Sunday 31st…..the historians conclusion to the Battle.
Some great videos have been posted on their site with Tom Neil featured in six of them, in one he mentions the historians July 10th-31st October time frame for the BoB, but mentions the important point that his squadron and others fought into November and December.
Many more Spitfires to be drunk to the Few this anniversary year then!
All harrier flying will cease on the 15th dec with a planned 16 ship formation sometime before that
Blimey, thought 1 Sqn were carrying on till March 2011?
Finding the Foe by a certain Mr Saunders:)
Same here, essential reading for the Battle of Britain.
Also have Jarrod Cotters ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight-50 Years of Flying ‘ on the go and finishing the biography of Keith Park by Vincent Orange.
Gift of Wings. Richard Bach
Moggy
I’m with Moggy on this, that book is the only one that has summed up for me why I fly.
As others have said, narrowing it down to one book is tricky, but Bachs stories in the above book strike a chord with me.
Excellent show all round……….glad the F-15’s showed:o
A special mention to the commentary team, particularly Ben Dunnell for correcting the glaring omission of Brian Lecombers name when Brendan O’Brien claimed none of the former Rothmans Team members were alive!
I would say there was no chance of a display by the F-15’s, it will be a result if they turn up.
There hasnt been a dedicated demo crew in the USAFE since 1991 although Lakenheaths jets have been used by the stateside demo pilots at RIAT and Legends in 07 when an E model flew as part of the Heritage Flight and did a solo routine as well.
There is a fair chance that the majority of Biggins typical airshow crowd ie, the families will know nothing about this ditching of the airshow proper, this group far outnumber the enthusiast portion of BH’s crowd and maybe don’t access the aviation websites.
Big mistake by the bosses at Biggin, in my opinion the Air Fair was the best show of the year if variety of display items was the judging criteria.
I typically attend about 8 shows a year, and Biggin is there with Flying Legends and RIAT in my ‘absolutely must book hols from work’ list.
I know us enthusiasts can be stubborn and resistant to change, but we arent talking about an event that was making a loss, there was a lock out a couple of years back due to the huge crowds, and the same would have happened this year but for the World Cup.
Think I’m in denial about this , it hasnt quite sunk in yet…….I effing hate businessmen:mad:
Translated by Babble-fish this means:
“Come and see how brilliantly we manage South London Interstellar Airport (formerly Biggin-something -or-other). Oh, and you pathetic lot interested in historic aircraft go and sit in that hut we’ve saved for you at great expense and we’ll see if we can get something to fly past should there be a gap in our fantastic business traffic”.
🙁
That about sums it up.
Biz jets???…….wow exciting:rolleyes:
Looking good, fingers crossed as ever for the weather and the RNHF.
Thanks for posting.
Was it ever in the Red Arrow’s?
Well the weather didnt behave, but that didnt stop the LLA day with the BBMF being an interesting and memorable day.
The ‘new’ BBMF Spitfire TE311 is comely along nicely with wings and engine fitted and standing on its undercarriage.
The two BoB fighters followed the Lanc out for a taxi to the hold and back, the weather state being ‘yellow’ rather than the much better ‘green’ prevented the BBMF flying, but it was still wonderful to hear six Merlins.
I left at 1500 for the long trek back and stepped from the hangar just as the Red Arrow’s saluted the day with red, white and blue smoke on their way back to Scampton.
All in all, a great first visit for me, and a nice haul of goodies from the BBMF!
Thankyou to the LLA and to the BBMF for making the visit possible!

Looking forward to it!…….(despite the long drive)
Early to bed for me tonight.
Yes, I recall a story a couple of years back which claimed the Royal Navy actually won the Battle…….although knowing how journo’s operate, maybe an experts words were taken out of context.
Douglas Bader’s efforts were deconstructed some years back as well.
And I know I harp on about this, but during the early years of the last government, I felt there were frequent attempts to sweep the BoB under the carpet, and downplay it.
I remember an occasion when the late great 32 Sqn pilot Pete Brothers was bemoaning the fact that Blair hadnt bothered to attend the memorial sevice at the Abbey…..he called him a creep.
Couldnt have put it better myself!
That all said, as we are getting towards the end of the anniversary year, I have to say that I have been most impressed with the public of all ages with their enthusiasm for the Battle at events from airshows to flypasts and the memorial day at Capel le Ferne.
The media have done the BoB proud this year both on TV and in the papers.
An excellent well balanced programme.
James did a superb job of presenting the events of the Battle without demeaning it in any way.
Incidentally, I’m so glad that the debunkers of the BoB, mainly supporters of the other two services, have stayed in their boxes this anniversary year.
An excellent programme, the subject warranted at least an hour long slot though.
Its inspired me to order Andy’s book;)
