I’m surprised Bentwaters hasnt been considered for the F1 testing, that said, it is a tad out of the way in the corner of Suffolk.
The benefits to Duxford though are obvious…….but my worry is the ‘NIMBY brigade’, it could add fuel to their argument.
A Sopwith Pup next eh?…….a lovely aircraft by all accounts.
Best wishes to Bruce for a speedy recovery.
Two PM1650s and a M724 in close formation-that would be interesting :diablo:
I’m not flying them, so its not my problem…….I’m busy that weekend:diablo:
Anybody can use the research / archive facility at Hendon, just phone to make an appointment; thankfully the pseudo academic snobbery that predominates this forum, does not apply there, and the staff are very helpfull.
Thanks for that Stuart,I’ll check them out.
Competition time……..’Miss Velma’ and………….
BBD (G-HAEC) and ‘Ferocious Frankie’ *
*DISCLAIMER:-The mention of the above two P-51’s has no basis in fact, I’m just bored:dev2:
BSG-75 I’m a tad late as I’ve only just seen it. I thought it was excellent, while (obviously) an aviation enthusiast, WW1 era is outside of my main area, in fact I don’t think I own a WW1 book, model etc
Its interesting what you say there, when I was growing up, I was solely interested in modern military aircraft, especially the USAF.
When many of the USAFE bases closed and there were fewer airshows, I branched out as it were.
Now I love WWI aviation, WWII aviation especially the BoB and the activities of the USAAF’s 8th Air Force, Vietnam…….the list goes on.
The only area of aviation holding zilch interest is the airliner world.
Someone mentioned Alexandra Churchill, its very refreshing to see a young aviation historian perpetuating the memory of the World War pilots.
It was fascinating to see the original notes for Flying Fury, can anyone book an appointment with ‘DoRIS’ at Hendon, or do you have to be an historian researching for a book to view the archives?
A packed programme that more than lived up to my expectations, well done to all involved, I raised a glass to ‘Mac’ and ‘Mick’.
I agree with all the previous comments, particularly the restricted access.
The exhibits however, are well worth the trip.
I always drive there from South London and it is still an enjoyable day, the much maligned GW opening times and the fact I haven’t seen the Upper Galleries since the early 80’s annoy me no end though.
The absence of an ‘airfield atmosphere’ is very noticeable and happened when far too much land was lost to the developers.
Maybe some sort of original Hendon airfield scene could be replicated outside ie a dispersal, even using just full scale replica’s, anything to give a ‘snapshot’ of Hendon as it was.
A really nice set of pictures, thanks for posting them.
How long did the BBMF Hurri take to get back flying after her little stumble at Dux in 04?
Sounded like a good evening to beat the winter blues, I keep toying with the idea of going to one, but I dont know any other members:o
Signed, B.Nomates
I notice Ed Shipley sits up high when he is taxying a P-51 back in.
Nice nostalgic shots by the way.
IIRC there was one Jamaican listed as flying in the Battle of Britain…..I don’t know if it’s the same guy that appears in that well known photo of the clutch of pilots in winter flying gear standing with Malan…??
That was Flt Sgt Vincent Bunting of Jamaica in that photo, he flew with 611 Squadron in 1943.
The one Jamaican in the Battle of Britain was P/O Capstick, 236 Squadron
How is the restoration going?
Bradburger,
Your opening paragraph in your response #47 rather confirms my query. At Biggin the pilot couldn’t be contacted yet at Duxford he was. Presumably the monitoring group were in/on the Control Tower at Duxford but weren’t at Biggin. I’d just like to know if airshow rules now insist on the “watchers” having a direct line to the pilots to “pull” their display if it isn’t going to plan and if the procedure is in the pre-show briefing.
I’m sure one of the recommendations made by the AAIB was to have a direct line to the tower, especially at airfields like Biggin.
At Duxford, the commentary point is beside the tower, and I’m assuming this area is where the ‘watchers’ would be located.
The problem at Biggin, is that the tower is across the other side of the airfield……not crowd centre.
