Only reference to the DC-4/C 54 fuel system being complex was in the Wiki link to a DC 4 crash in Oz, that was controversially put down to water in the fuel, but no detail of the system.

A quick Google brings up the report on the fuel system of the Argonaut, but no detail of the DC-4/C54 that I could find. Seems to be a Canadair mod?

IIRC there was a complete BBC programme devoted to the cause of that incident, a long, long time ago. I remember that day because my uncle (MD of BM at the time) & aunt were visiting myself & my wife when there was a knock on the door (we had no phone then) & his friend gave him the bad news. Seems that others in the industry were aware of the crossfeed leak possibility on Argonauts, but there was no central information centre that could collect & disseminate the problem to other operators.

Watch out for Canberra ‘Epsteins’ then, they were/are known for cracking in storage! Although cracked ones could be flown with reduced g loads, but for how long I don’t know.

Service Installation Schedule? They look like lists of items required for service installation of modifications or alterations. I note that they include the mod number & approval by committee date. I’ve not come across that before as I was usually involved in Alteration leaflets, which have the items listed and/or drawings required. SRIMs (I think Service Radio Installation Modification) would be similar to alteration leaflets, but a ‘full blown’ modification could need that type of listing.

I only know what my father told me re: Hercs, ‘Big’ Hercs & Centurii – he was a x rated engineer who was involved in getting Viking Hercs a good life extension & possibly also Hermes ‘big’ Hercs to run without much problems in the 50’s & 60’s. He also managed a Sea Fury & was rebuilding a Centaurus when he died. The secret seemed to be to Shell 100U oil, (& ‘Dragons blood’ to keep it where it should be) as well as temperature management so the sleeves did not pinch. When one considers the number of Hercs et al produced, serviceability was very good, although some airline pilots seemed to be harder on their power plants than others. Nowadays there can’t be anyone alive who used to maintain them in quantity, so its left to the few who unfortunately cannot gain the experience of operating them.
So to keep a sea fury in the air I would rather see one P&W’d that flies, rather than one on the deck with a dicky motor up front.

Nice to see SL721 a Mk XVI in the background – my father crated her at Blackbushe & then re-assembled her in ’77 for Woodson K Woods at Pheonix, Az.

First guess is that the 2C, or 1C reference is the 2BA screw length used to fit those panels.

Normally I would expect to be able to trace a detailed description of the alteration on a piece of paper filed as AGS/281 for example.
Vickers drawings would have a column on each drawing where a simplified description of the change is written, but there is usually a lot more back up paperwork created by a modification (or alteration) that has to be complied with & should be available for reference.

Hangers are for clothes or ‘on’ people…….Hangars are for hairyplanes…
I bet that airshow would make a few ATC personnel or the Airshow director go pale beyond belief.

Not supersonic – with thick aerofoils of the ‘wrong’ profile at any significant angle of attack you hit compressibility problems at as low as Mach 0.5!

The problem with lower prop rpm is lower thrust. The WW prop was designed to give maximum thrust at 2850 rpm x 0.477 reduction and about 4 degrees AoA (28 degrees pitch) in ‘climbing condition’ at 0.7 radius. This it did fine – it just got rapidly much draggier above Mach 0.55 at 0.7 radius (Mach 0.79 at tip) doing this.

Thank you for that technical data & can very easily understand that situation, but it was my bad choice of word when describing it as supersonic. But at the shock wave created by the compressibility/ aerofoil problem, does not the speed of sound become that of the local velocity?
It strikes me that the ‘throbbing’ sound of the old Lockheed Hercs & the two noisy trips I had in an Astazou Jetstream during the climb to 20k ft were caused by props operating beyond their ideal rotational & forward speed. In cruise & let down with the throttle reduced it quietened down. Other aircraft come to mind…Harvard being one of them.

Being of simple mind…..As it seems the prop was in supersonic mode, would not a change of reduction gear been appropriate in order to lower the tip speed?

Free BMD is a good place to start, but if Scottish then one might need to employ a researcher, unless you go there. Scotlands People can though get you started. Ancestry can give you contacts & leads once on your way. Census lists also a good way to go too. I used M$ Excel to create the family tree – found the commercial ones a bit difficult, but that was nearly 10 years ago.
    Hope thats of use.
