Monday was the rehearsal
It’s certainly convinced me that the age-old claim that you could build a model of the Hastings by using a Halifax kit, is pretty hopeless!
Be easier to build the wing from scratch!
It ain’t never gonna happen – it worries me that they would even imagine that it would be a possibility!
You’d think that in view of their location, they’d set their sights on something more appropriate – a Varsity or a Dominie perhaps? I wish!:p
I heard that the folks at Finningley were talking about all manner of grand ideas. Somebody claimed that they had even mentioned getting a Harrier flying (as if!).
I think they’d be better-off concentrating on getting XH558 back in the air next year without dreaming about any other ideas!
Can’t find any images which would help I’m afraid but you’re assumptions are probably correct. Decal artists have a habit of guessing in the absence of factual evidence!
Great photos – especially the first colour shot – I assume that’s from a movie?
Thing is, are we sure that the Halifax at Elvington is proportionally correct?
Ahh yes, watching Vulcans being dismantled is a grim business. XM652 ended her days in a Sheffield scrap yard. I went over to take a look and the whole aircraft was laid there in a crumpled heap, some guy hacking it to bits with a saw. I often wonder what happened to the engines as they were on a trolley all safely bagged-up, which suggests that they might have had some hours left on them. Pity they didn’t find their way to XH558, although I guess fitting them might have been tricky, given that they were 300 series engines.
Don’t suppose anyone has seen any pictures of Boscombe Down’s B2 which had some rather unusual black calibration markings on its bomb bay doors?
The kink is part of her beauty!
Mind you, the shot above of VX777 is pretty impressive too. Vulcans really are magnificent!
More brilliant photos. Yep, that’s XH558 in the paint scheme which I’d happily re-apply if I was rich!:p
It’s not that bad, is it? How far have you got to pop?
Half an hour or so. But it looks like it’s gonna be another weather scrub unless the forecast for Friday is as heroically inaccurate as usual!
I was thinking of popping up to Finningley to wave her off to Kemble but the weather forecast suggests that it might be a waste of time!
I guess the colour scheme preference depends on your age and which paint scheme you remember most vividly!
white Vulcans painted in the colours for the role they were originally designed for
To be fair, the camouflage scheme was designed for the same role, as you will know – just at a different altitude!
The only paint scheme I’ve never disliked is that ghastly finish on poor ol’ XH558. I suppose there’s a vague irony in the only surviving airworthy Vulcan being painted in a scheme which is unique to that aircraft. Rest assured that if I win the Lottery, I’ll be funding a respray!:p
That last shot illustrates what I’ve always regarded as the Vulcan’s “definitive” paint scheme. The camouflage and black nose was (at least for me) what made a Vulcan really look like a Vulcan. Delicious!
I agree that the colour shot of XA892 is indeed remarkable – a good quality image of the silver paint scheme is a rarity.
Ahh, the days when jets spewed smoke… 🙂
