@SpudmanWP: I would love to see the basis for that claim (heavy red victory). The longest recorded BVR kill ive come across is around 55 km. That is within the reach of passive systems of today.
Just because something is “fifth gen” doesnt mean it’s better at everything..
Since the APA comparison was A2A, that’s what I went with.
As far as a basis: If the APA says that the Su-27/30/35 will clean the skies of F-35s, what hope would they give a 4th gen asset have when the F-35 has better datalinks, better radar, and a much better RCS? Remember that the F-35 can use the Meteor too, so no benefit to the 4th gen asset there.
On the issue of missiles, the -120D has a better datalink, INS, & likely better ECCM while the Meteor likely has better range.
The F-15SE internal bays mean no CFT hardpoints. It’s either-or, not both.
The APA wants the F-22 due to knowing that using current 4th gen assets against advanced Red-Air would result in mutual kills (or heavy RED victory if you go by their analysis). Given that and the use of F-22s for A2A, they still needed a survivable A2G platform, hence their idea of refurbishing the F-111 into a 5th gen asset.
The APA wanted to ether do the F-111 work or get paid for “coming up with the idea”, hence their hatred of the F-35 (they don’t get any money).
How about sitting next to the approach glide path at LAX?
The F-35 is hardened, although to what extent is not public knowledge. It could not do the nuke mission without it.
If you only show a very generic (colored wedge) RCS diagram of the F-35 and nothing of the F-22 and then say that this proves that you need the F-22, that is an invalid comparison (apples to invisible orange), ergo intellectual dishonesty.
If the APA wanted to be intellectually honest about the analysis it would have also done it with an F-22 & an armed Su-27/30/35, Rafale, EF, etc and would have presented it in full detail (like it did with the J-20) and not just simplistic Green/Yellow/Red wedges.

Better question:
If they can make it re-useable and safe enough as to not cripple the host aircraft (a cruise missile in this case), how long till we see them pod mounted (or internal) on fighters for EW and missile defense?
It would be hard (pun intended) to harden a missile against an HPM due to it needing an EM pathway to receive radar returns, proximity fuse returns, and datalinks.
Along the same lines, how about ADA using it to take out inbound missiles & PGMs.

The quote was “650 parameters” and can be described as different aspects/modes of multiple systems. For example, instead of just an A2G mode for the radar, it has SAR, ISAR, etc.
The largest of these is the ESM. The F-22’s ALR-94 took a huge leap in capability and the F-35’s ASQ-239 takes it to the next level.
As I said, advanced 4th gen systems will pull in more than the ~6 in the quote. I think that applies to basic, radar, IFF, etc.
Target ID is a paramount feature in the F-22 and more so in the F-35.

Not so sure about advanced 4th gen like GripenNG, EF, Rafele, Su-35, etc
Power relay & control stations; communications control centers, nodes, & relays, etc could be attacked and cause just enough damage during a simultaneous A2G or cruise missile attack as to ensure a greater level of success by the attacking forces.
Here’s another crazy thought.
Design a new pylon that has room for two MALDs head -to-toe. At each point, mount a BRU-69. That gives a total of 4 MALDs that eject straight down (or close enough to that for Govt work). Since the total is well under 2500 lbs, the F-35 can easily carry 4 of these for a total of 18 MALDs.
Here’s the icing on the cake: swap some of the MALDs for JSOW(ER) (2 internal & 4 on the inner pylons) for 6 JSOWs and 12 MALDs. At a 2:1 decoy/jammer to JSOW ratio, most of them should get through.
