    A MALD is less than 300lbs and the inner pylon max is 5000. 9xMALD < 2700 lbs which leaves 2300 lbs for the pylon and racks.

    Weight wise, there is nothing keeping the F-35 from carrying the same 6x MALD rack that the B-52 carries (I warned you it was crazy) on the inner wing station. Put a TER on the outer wing station and a MALD in the internal bay.

    In case the wing stations are too close to each other, the outer TER would be limited to two MALDS (ala F-16) which means a max of 18.

    That being said, this will never happen (I did say crazy).

    A more likely max load is 10 (Four MERs and two internal).

    Don’t forget to throw in some Boeing CHAMPs for good measure 🙂

    But then any fighter with a decent FLIR can target enemy aircraft at that range too and eleminate the enemy’s advantage in RCS and radar power 🙂 even the f-16 can still carry 4 aim-120d with all 18 decoys

    I don’t see decoys as being of much use in A2A once inside the range of FLIR/IRST. I see them more useful in A2G ops to spoof IADS and defending aircraft.

    I figured as much, I’ve just never seen them used as a stabilizer but only as control surfaces in flight (eg some Russian AAMs, MOAB, etc).

    Russia had them for quite a while.

    I know what a lattice fin control is. The problem is that what is in the MALD photo above is one piece, has no opening for the turbine engine, does not move, and is not shown in MALD photos that are in flight. It looks to be some sort of stabilizing drag system.

    Was it demonstrated in exercises? And if so, sources?

    The ESM system of the F-22 is one of its most secretive of components. You will likely never hear of what it can pickup.

    I did not realize were were speaking specifically of an F-22 launching the AMRAAM. But since you brought it up, many things can “leak” in a fighter (not all of which will be voluntary) that will give the ALR-94 something to lock on to.

    In case you’re wondering, I too think the F-22 without AIRST was a mistake.

    Speaking of MALD, I thought that the perforated fins were for steering, but they are a solid plate (they do not move).

    Does anyone know what they are for?

    A new idea have just appear in my mind :diablo: , a rack like MERs can carry 6 ITALD ( have range over 400 km ) , TERs rack can carry 3 MALD-J ( range over 920 km ) http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-141.html ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADM-141_TALD , these decoys can be carried just like MK-82 ,and even F-16 can carry 18 MK-82 ,

    A crazier idea is an F-35 which technically could hold 20 MALD units. 🙂

    Any fighter with a decent FLIR or IRST would see that a contact at <50nm in infact a decoy and not a fighter or bomber.

    It’s still necessary to paint until the AMRAAM goes active.

    Or the AMRAAM’s pK will be low because it doesn’t get any mid-course update.

    Radar is not needed to provide mid-course updates. Any sensor (active or passive) in the network can be used.

    Well, the future of BVR missile is the BVR IR missile, because there is no stealth against heat emissions; and jets do heat up a lot during a combat flight.

    There are several things to take into consideration when talking about an active (or SAR) AAM vs an LO target.

    1. The distance that the missile’s seeker can lock onto the target is significantly reduced vs a non-LO target. This means that the launching AC (or 3rd party targeting) will have to guide the AAM into a closer intercept before the AAM goes active. This gives the target LO fighter more time to evade, jam, or attack the launching AC in order to sever the guidance to the AAM.

    2. The RCS of an LO target is not uniform but has distinct highs and lows. This will cause the missile’s seeker to gain & lose track as its aspect to the target changes. In other words, it will be difficult for the missile to maintain a solid track of the LO fighter. Without a solid track, determining target speed, vector and an intercept course is more difficult.

    3. The F-22/35 still carries chaff & flares as a defensive measure vs missiles & AAA that finally do come within striking distance.

    4. I have no doubt that the F-35 will get more advanced systems like active (360 AESA) jammers, towed decoys, etc as it progresses through it’s lifetime. It did not come with them in Blk3 when cost savings vs need vs development time were taken into account. There is already internal space in the F-35 reserved for jammers and if they wanted they could add permanent TDs by replacing the vertical stabilizers and put the TDs in the base as they do on the F-16s, house them in the wing pylons (in non LO mode), or put them in LO blisters that mount on the wing stations.

    5. NCADE is designed to attack boost-phase TBMs so it’s maneuverability is in question against a fighter. However, it can definitely get high enough if launched into the face of an oncoming high-altitude target (Mig-31, HALE, etc).

    It only has two sensors which means that it cannot track objects below the Rafale due to the bods and wings in the way, like a MANPADS team defending the target you are flying towards.

    Besides, it’s only an MLD and does not do what EODAS does.

    Can it later do more with more CPU power and integration work, sure. I am in no way saying that EODAS wil never be matched, just that it has not yet.

    Two (or more) F-35s miles apart would compare tracks and be able to determine with decent accuracy the trajectory of a TMB and where it was launched from.

    You’re confused again (or under the influence of some bad reporting). With the F-35, the missile (or bomb) is targeted using a Weapons Grade (WG) track. It does not matter what sensor (or combination of sensors) provides that WG track). Any sensor, onboard or off, can contribute to the track. In other words, an AMRAAM can be launched by a track provided by any one sensor (EOTS, EODAS, RADAR, MADL, ESM, etc) or any combination thereof. Weapons are not tied to any particular sensor.

    Often, the pilot will not even know which sensor provides the track but he can spend a few moments to find out.

    The F-35 maintains two types of tracks, Situational Awareness (SA) and Weapons Grade (WG). The F-35 can maintain 100+ SA (A2A & A2G) tracks, 8 A2A WG tracks, and 16 WG A2G tracks. An SA track is changed to a WG track as soon as the target is placed in the Shootlist. The shooter does not have to be the one to provide the WG or SA track as all info is shared via MADL (aka “The shooter is not the sensor”).

    btw, EODAS is very useful in combat not only as a MDL/MAWS (and in the same capacity for AAA) but also for tracking airborne tracks in WVR, and to provide guidance tracks for WVR missiles (AMRAAM, 9X, etc). Because the EODAS tracks are fed directly into the system, the pilot does not have to twist his head around to line up a HOBS shot using an HMS. The pilot only needs to select the target from the shoot list (touchscreen, HOTAS switch, or voice command), verify the pK, and shoot.

    Err.. and what good is that when those ballistic nukes that @djcross was talking about are already on their way to London, Paris, & Berlin, ?

    A TBM is not going to reach those cities, at least not yet.

    What EODAS can do in this instance is to prove a detailed track and likely target for the TBM. If other fighters are in the area, they can be vectored to engage the TBM with weapons like NCADE or airborne PAC-3 (still in the works, but then so is the F-35). The EODAS track will also provide more of a warning for the target.

    I think you are confusing EOTS with EODAS as they serve two completely different functions. EOTS is an advanced version of a typical targeting pod while EODAS provides 360 coverage (which nobody has).

    The hard part is concept and integration. That is done. Once in production then it can & will get upgraded as funds and need dictate.

    This is a far cry from 4th gen systems due to it being a completely new piece of equipment and a new integration task.

    btw, A pod will never match EODAS due to size and sector coverage.
