Anyhow, The F-35 has better range, warload, SA, & survivability than any F-16/18 flying.
Even if you hang weapons externally on the F-35 it still has a better RCS sig than 4th gen, better SA, better radar, better range, etc.

The F-35 can release a weapon MUCH closer to a target than the Rafale can so the SDB1&2 work just fine. There is also JSM, JADM-ER, JSOW & JSOW-ER that can be carried internally.
One of the F-35’s icing layers (UAI) makes adding weapons the easiest upgrade on the F-35 (and easier than any other production fighter today). All that is needed is for Sagem to create the flight profile, certify separation, and the AASM could be flying on F-35s worldwide the next day, no block upgrade needed.
Add to that the fact that AASM is a add-on kit like JDAM, a US company (LM, Boeing, ATK, Raytheon, etc) could partner with Sagem to bring the AASM extension tech to the JDAM family.
btw, Stormshadow (Scalp EG) is being certified for the F-35, so no Rafale advantage there.
Then it’s a good thing that the JSF has nice THICK layers of icing 😉

In terms of domestic production & tech transfer, yes the EF & SH would be a better fit.
Maybe Japan could buy their way into the SDD program? I am sure there are some European countries that would like a few billion dollars 🙂
That is my point, any SH R&D & upgrades would be paid by Japan thereby removing the singular SH benefit: price.
The USN does not want to spend money on upgrading the SH though. Just look at the apathetic solution for an IRST they came up with! They have also said no to new engine dev.
As to when they could get the F-35, they could start receiving Blk2 jets by 2013/14. This would get their training wings up and running (the F-2 wing destroyed in teh tsunami was a training wing), perform basic A2A & A2G missions, and could be upgraded to Blk3 & beyond within a couple of years.

How can you begin to assume what a creatively upgraded SH could go to Red Flag with in 2018/2019, fully equipped and asymmetrically armed for less than the raw F-35A unit Weapon system cost (no weapons included)?
I already gave the SH props for a lower price. Don’t ruin it by adding on R&D & upgrade costs.
BTW, a specialized follow-on ALQ-218 V3 + a next gen LW IRST equipping such next-gen 2018 SH would enable superior BVR situational awareness. Just add a modified asymmetrical AAM capability and Litening or Sniper SE pod for added superiority. imho.
And there is the rub. Who is going to pay for all this R&D?
How does it compare to the post-SDD R&D for the F-35?
The post-SDD R&D has a much better chance of happening, and will be cheaper, due to a large user base that has already started funding it. That cannot be said for the SH. That might change if SH goes to Brazil, India, & Japan… but those are big if’s.
Wrong; it has more advantages that price. It’s available today.

Seriously? The only think the SH has over the JSF is price (oh wait, it looses that when you add all the upgrades you want). In virtually every other category (range w/warload, sensors, survivability) the F-35 wins hands-down.
The main reason why the B was cut has to do with the “probation” it was placed on. Once that clears the build numbers will be back up. Actually, I did expect something like this when they announced the probationary period, especially since they have not announced a perm fix to the structural issue.
If this had been a cut showing overall disapproval of the F-35 program, they would have also cut the C and certainly would not have increased the A buy.

Just Push “Auto-Land”: A Lockheed Martin F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing test aircraft last week achieved an impressive milestone, according to Warren Boley, Pratt & Whitney military engines president. “For the first time,” Boley said in an interview, “a pilot pushed a button and the [air]plane landed autonomously.” Boley joked that the pilot could fold his hands behind his head or “read the paper” while the airplane safely settled down to a vertical landing from hover. When the F-35B takes off from a runway it can carry 15k of weapons (which is more than the weight of an empty Harrier!). What is the Harrier’s max?
I am not sure of the F-35B’s STO max weapons load though from a carrier deck.
