    What is known about the F-35 is that it is going to need 40-50 manhours per hour of flight.

    Please stop quoting any research done by Defense-Aerospace.com as it is not only biased, but plain just wrong and often does not provide sources.

    For example, he included the Direct Maint Man Hours (DMMH) for the F-22 (ie a requirement of 12) in hopes that you would think that what the contract entailed had anything to do with DMMH. However, when you look at the solicitaton you will quickly realize that what it covers is off-site support (ie why it’s a civilian contract).

    Here are just a few quotes from the solicitation:

    This Sole Source contract will be awarded to Lockheed Martin Corporation, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (LM Aero), Fort Worth, TX, for non-recurring and recurring sustainment support for all fielded F-35 aircraft for FY18-19.

    The material and non-recurring sustainment activities include: Training Material and Infrastructure, Initial Spares, Support Equipment, Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) Material and Infrastructure, Site Surveys and Site Activation Activity, Depot Activation, Reliability, Maintainability and Health Maturation, and the Structural Integrity Program.

    All recurring sustainment support and PBL Operations for the United States Air Force (USAF), United States Marine Corps (USMC), and United States Navy (USN), non-U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Participants and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers, to include: Program Management, Sustainment Integration Activities, Systems and Sustaining Engineering, Product Support Management, ALIS Maintenance and Operations, Fleet Management, Security Management, Joint Technical Data Management, Low Observable Management, Training and Training Support, Training Systems Operations, Support Equipment Support, Supply Support and Management Services, Industrial Operations, Warfighter Support, Support of Customer Unique Requirements, Ferry of Aircraft, Engineering Change Management, Support of the United States Reprogramming Laboratory, and DMS/MS support.

    In other words, this covers everything that the service’s own technicians do not do like off-site repairs & rebuilding of parts, training, etc.

    C295 wins Canadian FWSAR contest

    In press reports, the government was accused of developing requirements tilted to heavily favour the C-27J. When the competition was resumed in 2011 after a five-year hiatus, the Royal Canadian Air Force commissioned an independent review of the requirements, which in 2015 cleared the project of showing bias to any single bidder.

    WHAT????

    Canada changed the requirements to allow the competition to be “fair” and the complainer won in the end…… where have I seen that before?

    On a serious note, I wonder what requirements favored the C-27J over the C-295 (range, speed, payload, etc)?

    Also, like the F119 augmentor, the F135 augmentor is stealthy: The design of the
    two engines’ augmentors places multi-zone fuel injection into curved vanes which eliminate
    conventional spray bars and fl ame holders and block the line of sight to the turbine when
    looking into the engine from behind.

    DDM-NG does not send the video images to the avionics. It is a drop in replacement for the previous system and only provides more accurate detection and tracking due to it’s improved sensors. They will have to upgrade the datalinks and avionics before the rest of the avionics can use the raw video image feeds. This is a similar issue with the F-22 which also uses IIR based MAWS but the avionics only gets track data from the sensors, not the raw video feed.

    “You can’t prove a negative” is the same as saying “The absence of evidence is the evidence of absence”. In other words, they have never claimed that it was a feature so it’s safe to say that it’s not a feature. This is in the same vein as my long held belief that the F-35 did not have a towed decoy. It was not until this year that BAE gave us the details to the system and looking back at budget docs shows that it was in Block2B and part of the USMC’s IOC.

    Here is what has been published about the Mig-35’s SOAR

    SOAR – System consist of two stations, one on engine’s gondola, second on the top of the fuselage, behind the cabin. It detects rocket launches and shows the direction from which the missile is coming. The threat is also signalled by vioce. It can detect Stinger/Igla from 10km, a2a missiles from 30km, big surface to air missiles from 50km. SOAR was also developed in NII PP Institute.

    The concept behind DDM NG is the ability to detect incoming attacking missiles from any direction and angle of attack with regard to the host aircraft. It will succeed the current DDM system on the Rafale as a “form, fit and function” replacement. DDM NG incorporates a new infrared array detector which enhances performance with regard to the range at which a missile firing will be detected, offers improved rejection of false alarms and gives an angular localisation capability which will be compatible with the future use of Directional Infra Red Counter Measures (DIRCM). With two sensors, each equipped with a fish-eye lens, DDM NG provides a spherical field of view around the aircraft.

    Note lack of any new feature or mention of video imagery.

    The Eurofighter does not even have an IR based MAWS (tranche 3 maybe???) so no contest there.

    And you know this how ?

    Simple:
    1. It’s the first IIR based MAWS to provide video to the avionics
    2. Nobody else has claimed that they can.
    3. You can’t prove a negative.

    i dont think its the only MAWS that can track a space rocket under power tho

    Instead of guessing, try Googling and provide a link if you find it.

    This modification installs a number of viability upgrades on Air Force VC-25A aircraft. The block modification includes: Protected SATCOM, Chillers, Nitrogen Generation System, weather radar, digital voice/data systems, and network capabilities (e.g., Commercial Internet, Multi-Role Tactical Common Data Link, Mobile User Objective System) to sucessfully complete the President of the United States airlift mission until the Presidential Aircraft Recapitalization program reaches full operational capability. Installation of the block upgrade will be aligned with aircraft heavy maintenance depot visits beginning in FY17.

    DAS lost track on the space rocket at burnout, dont count on tracking with low/moderate IR radiation

    WHAT.. it lost track of a non-burning rocket at 900+nm.. say it aint so!!!!

    What do you mean it’s the only MAWS in existence that can even do that?

    Next thing you know they’ll tell us it’s a failure since it can’t track orbiting satellites. 😉

    Just plain no.

    EODAS is much better than “standard MAWS” and anyone with eyeballs can tell the difference.

    The Major’s “look outside” quote has to do with the whole “see through the floor” feature which is a tertiary feature at best.

    Once again, the EODAS’s primary responsibility is to track an object. Other sensors will ID it.

    Once ID’d, the F-35’s sensor fusion will continue to label the object and share that info.

    Of course you have specific information to support this claim no?

    Because they’ve already stated that the shape recognition algorithms allow for that very thing at ranges that would make visual ID impossible.

    Not only that but once the target is being tracked, EM emissions from it will also help to ID it. This is one of the reasons why the F-35 has 3 times the parameters to ID a target than the F-22.

    EOTS allow you to ID the fighter, DAS does not have that ability at any range

    It does not have to ID at long range, just track already ID’s targets or alert to new targets.
