‘Heavy water’ (aka deuterium monoxide) is water in which most of the hydrogen has been replaced by deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen. It is a little heavier than normal water, hence the name.

It is used as a ‘moderator’ in older models of nuclear reactor and, although it’s not radioactive, it wouldn’t do you much good if you were to down a couple of litres of the stuff.

Hydrogen, on the other hand, is a gaseous element, lighter than air and very explosive. (See LZ129 and R101 for further details…..)

Today, I collected 9 of these cartons, flattened them, went up town, and put them all through the Kebab shops letterbox.

I have a strategy for dealing with the endless leaflets from pizza shops, kebab houses, fried chicken emporia and the like that pour through one’s letterbox.

Every so often, I collect a number of them together, place them in an envelope addressed to one of the aforementioned establishments chosen at random, write “URGENT” on the front of the envelope in clear red capitals and then place in a postbox….. WITHOUT a stamp.

It can be oddly comforting. 🙂
