Talking to the only one daft enough to listen eh?:D
In my case seeing the grandchildren this afternoon.

At least I’m sure of a sensible answer. And what made me smile was not actually coming last in the pub quiz .

If a woman makes her own personal choice to wear a burkha, uninfluenced by anyone else, then she should be allowed to.I don’t think it’s reasonable for any country to ban it completely. But I can’t believe those women in my town are wearing it as a free choice. If they were asked, they would probably say they had chosen to wear it themselves and it’s not possible to prove whether that truly is the case or whether it’s unthinkable for them to disobey their husbands .

Flying Monkey,I assume you’re male.I’m not,so I can say I don’t believe there’s a woman alive who would swathe herself in a shapeless garment from head to foot if she had complete freedom of choice.I accept many women may happily choose to wear the burkha, and that’s fine. But the feeling in the West is that in the 21st century women should not have such a garment imposed on them.It goes against our ideal of freedom of choice. In my town there are many women who appear in public in a sea of black material with only their eyes able to give any expression that they are unique, individual human beings.Their husbands enjoy the latest Western fashions, jeans leather jackets, anything they fancy.King Abdullah doesn’t pronounce on what Western women should wear because he knows that Western men don’t presume to control every aspect of women’s lives .

Yes,my passport says British, but did Shakespeare close the wall up with our BRITISH dead?Is there some corner of a foreign field that is forever BRITAIN?I’m English, even though I love it here so much that when I do finally ring down the curtain and join the choir invisible I’m having my ashes scattered in Australia.Sorry I’m digressing .

That’s because the British are among the most ignorant people on the planet!

    Paul

SOME of the British are ignorant, and I’d like to know why a disproportionate number of those who are choose to live in my town. But I still think this is a pretty good country.Anyway,I’m not British,I’m English .

I can’t see that Creaking Door’s original post could have been construed as being at all offensive, it’s not implying any disrespect. At our church toddler group we have Muslim and Hindu parents ( but no burkhas or motor-cycle riding Sikhs ) and the biggest issue is that many of the Mums barely speak English.I don’t feel there’s any diplomatic way of saying this, but I do wish immigrants to the UK would make a reasonable effort to learn English.I do realise that the English themselves aren’t a good example, since I was watching a programme yesterday on British people who’d emigrated to Spain and seemed quite proud of the fact that they couldn’t speak any Spanish .

Looks like i’ll need to practise hard at my English then.

    My degree is English 😉

Spanish with English Language and Linguistics.

2nd – Sorry for sprining up all these talks on here about sliced pig flesh

3rd – I was talking about housemates, I was talking about my friend who (when I was talking to her on facebook at the same time as we were watching it) started to cry her eyes out.

    Sorry,didn’t mean to offend you.

Re-reading that last sentence of Robbie’s,I’m just glad he’s not doing an English degree. It’s also true that if you ARE offended you should never be afraid to let the right people know.I’ve complained about a couple of things to ITV and the Advertising Standards Agency and had very reasonable replies .
