RE: United Airlines In Trouble.
The sticking point for UA, as the article points out, is their labour costs. Even if the do create timmer airline in terms of equipment, destinations, etc., they still need to cut labour, as costly move, and not a very pretty situation to be in when people might lose their jobs. I fear that if the government doesn’t step in, and if UA can’t pay a massive labour force, then the future may not be so rosey. I don’t think the partner airlines will help. I recall the when AC was in serious trouble the partners did not bail them out.
Hand I will be in CDG on November 1, small world.
AC also uses their 767’s from YVR to LHR, and I believe (at least they used to) from YVR to CDG.
RE: Snow!
Great photo!
RE: PIC OF THE DAY
Ok, I am really stupid, I thought that it was two planes. I don’t see the wing???
RE: Heathrow should close!
I don’t quite see how the A380 is going to reduce traffic, unless there are not enough slots at a given airport to handle the size of the aircraft. If I was running an airline and had say twenty slots a day (for argument’s sake), and had the choice of using a mix of B777’s and A380’s, if I could fill the 380’s I would use them instead, thus maintaining aircraft traffic and trippling my passenger and cargo space. Why operate two 777’s on a route when you can use one A380 and save that other slot for another destination?
Where would Heathrow place its third runway? The area surrounding the airport seems very, very conjested and built up (at least from the sky).
RE: A Career in Aviation?
Although, should I be starving as an artist, I would love to get into the corporate side of an airline. Love the business of airlines, or even airport management.
Ok, that’s it.
RE: A Career in Aviation?
As far as I know BA does have a training program up to, and including, age 26, at least they did up to a couple of years ago. I was going to attempt registering, but made a complete 180 in terms of life direction (artist and comedian). Oh, Aer Lingus also had one at that time.
Hope that helps. Fantastic motivation that you all of you display.
RE: low cost long haul?
I just don’t think that it will fly (pardon the punn). Oh, and San Francisco was spelt incorrectly 🙂
RE: low cost long haul?
In Canada Air Transat and (the former Canada 3000) operate(d) long haul charter flights, and although always full (so it seems), the response from travellers (that I have talked to) is always a nightmare. I think that students, etc., would go for it, but you have to offer something a little more comfortable on long haul flights. Let’s be honest, if you hit a good seat sale the cost of a major carrier is just a bit more in dollars, but you get a lot more in comfort. At 6ft2 I can barely fit into cattle class as it is (praying BA upgrades me on my next flight).
I was speaking to a woman on the plane last year travelling from Glasgow to Heathrow when I was returning to Toronto, and she was going on to San Fransisco. They bumped her morning flight to Heathrow and gave her a credit on that portion of the ticket, so she ended up paying forty-nine pounds sterling, I NEARLY CHOKED on my traditional English breakfast!
RE: Heathrow should close!
Wow! Interesting comments. Is this gentleman prosposing a situation similar to Hong Kong? Is that actually possible in the southern UK? Although, with the go ahead of T5 will a new site even be considered?
I love flying into England, and let’s be honest, Heathrow gives one an amazing diversity of airlines and aircraft to take in, however, the airport is really getting dated. And with increasing strength of the EU I am not so sure that Heathrow has a permanent hold on number one in the European market, especially as the former (and current) colonies of the UK become more and more independent and woven into greater global markets (ie. 80% of Canada’s trade is now with the US).
Heathrow can be a big headache as well. Last year my flight had to hold on the ground in Toronto for an hour because tail winds were so strong over the Atlantic that we would get into London airspace to early and have to circle (which we still needed to do for some 25 minutes–however impressive the air to air movements looked in the early morning hours). But if it was possible to connect through Manchester, or even Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt, one may be more inclined to do so.
From everything that I have read, I don’t see the British government adopting such a proposal.
Sorry, that was a bit long winded 🙂
RE: What’s wrong?????
I would like to add my two cents worth if possible.
This is a really great forum, for the most part, however, I would share in Kabir’s thoughts, and perhaps expand if permitted.
People do seem to be shying away from getting into more engaging conversation, and yes there may be a natural fatique happening. The slow down may also coincide with the general slow down in news from the industry (and media) as well, especailly when compared with such a news rich year (however unfortunate the circumstances to make it such).
I would agree that the forum has a European (mainly UK) and Asian focus, this could be because the magazine doesn’t seem to have a higher profile in North America (from my perspective), though I definitely try posting North American topics as they come across.
I have noticed once or twice some really nasty and uncalled for retorts to some members’ opinions or observations. I believe this to be quite unfortunate, as I personally use this forum as a little oasis away from day to day activities with like minded aviation enthusiasts, or professionals. Perhaps we could try not to get bated into conversations that should best be left for another forum, or website.
I enjoy visiting the site, though still a relatively new member, I look forward to future conversations with the group.
Regards,

The Government of Canada uses military A310’s and Canadair jets.
Testing to see if pic works.

RE: Airline – Management Simulation
Also, on the Careers section of British Airways’ website they have a mock airport manager situation surrounding the potential redeploymentof a B777 from a foreign location. Fairly interesting.
