RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
This is interesting. I’ve just been speaking with the project leader on the ‘Bluebird’ mentioned above, who has in turn been talking to the VOC and HLF to find out all that he can, how it affects him etc etc.
He was told by both the VOC and the HLF that it is standard HLF policy NOT to fund any aircraft restorations, and that VOC knew this from the outset-meaning, it was always going to be a BIG shot in the dark attempt from the beginning.
If this is right-that they knew that they only had a tiny chance, if any, of getting Lottery money, why still go down the road of taking ‘558 so apart that now it can’t be ‘easily and cheaply’ put back together again? (Quote from VOC news page)
I don’t like the ‘we wish so-and-so Vulcans well, they continue to fly the flag etc etc’ sentiments expressed on the VOC site-if you ask me, that’s it, she’s done for, a kit of parts for whoever buys her.
A terrible mess all round, and a bad show.
RE: 558 hopes dashed ?
Terrible, terrible news. We can only hope now that she at least stays at Bruntingthorpe, as no offence meant, but no way on God’s good earth do I want to see her go over to the Yanks.
Hmm, I wonder if this will also mean bad news for the Lottery money bid to rebuild Donald Campbell’s ‘Bluebird’ boat that is going on at the moment?
I bet they give out thousands and thousands to pile of sh**e projects that no one ever hears about, too.
A dark, dark day.
RE: What are your most favourite aviation museums?
An obvious answer from me perhaps, but Hendon-for it’s atmosphere as much as for it’s content.
RE: Decency
C’mon you two, kiss and make up!
RE: Lancaster KB976
Sorry I can’t help with your specific request Peter, but who is the friend, and when is their book likely to be out? Should I be browsing for it on Amazon any time soon?!
RE: Major new Lancaster website!!!
Hi Peter,
If you read the message board on the Linc Lanc Assoc. website, they give their thoughts on the H2S blister problem in reply to a query I made there. They didn’t say what, but it seems there are technical problems to making one, and they are thus looking out for a real one-good luck to them, I say!
I hope more people gradually find and use the message board there to talk about Lanc stuff, as I’m getting bored with talking to myself!
RE: Free Entry at Duxford 10/11/02
Then again, Hendon is free year round!!!
RE: Killjoys!
Yes, I think this thread WAS just a laugh, and yet again someone way too serious has missed the point entirely, run with it and soured a thread.
No doubt this will now rage on for for days and days!
RE: Major new Lancaster website!!!
On the subject of PA474, I’d love to see a video history of her that went back as far as archive material would allow-okay so there’s unlikely to be footage of her serving with 82 Squadron in Afria, but surely there must be film of some of the laminar wing test flights? And then of her ‘one flight only’ to Waddington? And surely then after that, as she was restored and started making airshow appearances, there must be both official and amateur film of her in her early days out there?
It would be great to see some of this material-whatever there is-compiled and released, rather than just another ‘BBMF’ video, the likes of which we’ve seen plenty of over the years. (Which have ranged from appalling to superb!)
RE: Not in the spirit of FlyPast
…as not a single one of us in this thread has said any such thing, I’d respectfully suggest that the answer to David’s question is a huge resounding ‘NO’.
Jeez, sense of humour time?!
RE: Deighton’s Bomber – help an oldie
If you know someone with the right gear, or find a place online/in the phone book, you can have a CD copy made of your own original tape quite easily these days!
RE: Complete and utter morons!
Of course they took their windbreaks in…five hours before the hearing was due to start…
RE: Major new Lancaster website!!!
Anyone know where there is an original Lanc H2S blister going spare?!
RE: Major new Lancaster website!!!
Glad you liked the site Peter-I only found it by chance myself, and am doing my best to promote it online and get it going!
Yes, that satin paint looks ace-she looked great over the sea in the sunshine for four days at sunny Eastbourne this year, whereas in years gone by she’d have been one big shiny reflection!
Can’t explain the seat-it’s been black in previous years. Still, she does have a very nicely done cockpit, for a twin controller, anyway…
Thanks for the news on your Lanc, too!
Mike
RE: Aircraft Sounds on CD – wow!
Well, I of course am rather partial to the sound of four Merlins! Sadly it’s never been available on CD, but the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association have for years sold a tape called ‘Lancaster Operations On’, a great recording of PA474 going about her business, complete with crew intercom on one side, and without on the other. A great old, must-have recording!
From the same source you can get a similar tape on the Shackleton, and another superb one about some plane or other called the Vulcan?! Never heard of it…
Sorry for the relentless plugs (actually, no I’m not!!!) but you can find these tapes here-
