    RE: Major new Lancaster website!!!

I see lots of people have viewed this topic already-thanks-I hope you’ve all supported the new site! Some Lanc-related chat in their message board would be cool.

Terrible news! Sqn Ldr Paul ‘Major’ Day will be retiring from the RAF at the end of next year! 🙁

It’s not too soon to start saying that he’s going to leave a huge hole in the BBMF once he’s gone, but somehow I think we’ll still see him flying Spits here and there!

Regarding the Bollingbroke ‘Blenheim’ that needs a set of perspex, surely to goodness they can buy a set/borrow the moulds or whatever from ARCO at Duxford?

    RE: Primetime ‘Just Jane’ Video

Oh, right, well, thanks for the offer of help, but as Primetime themselves never seem to know a date, I’d be surprised if Woolies (home of the badly misfiled easy listening CD) knew anything!!!

Coincidentally, I’ve just had a leaflet from them this morning, with a picture of the cover and the yet again ammended release date of ‘November’. Hmm, we”ll see!

    RE: Forum Getogether?

Typical, centre it all on Duxford, around which the avaiation world rotates of course…

What we’re REALLY missing here is the opportunity for a whole gang of us to converge on Hendon-do you reckon if there are enough of us, we could lift the tail of the Lanc up, kick that perch out from under her arse, and gently lower her down again?!

Then we could all hit the restuarant there to have a plate of…well, something…in celebration…excuse me, I suddenly feel ill…

    🙁

RE: Dambusters meets Star Wars, the comparison

The primary source that George Lucas admits to being inspired by for the original Star Wars film is ‘The Hidden Fortress’ by Akira Kurosawa. The final battle scenes were based on all sorts of clips of original dog fights, which were actually used in the test print of the film before the final effects were finished-‘Dambusters’ has never been one of these.

    RE: Merlin engine pics.

Well, that’s the age old argument again isn’t it, ‘live’ airframes in museums that can at least run their motors, rather than sitting in the half-gloom (Yes, I’m talking about you, Hendon!!!) and collecting dust. The answer to that of course is money, money, money, with a little bit of ‘Whoops, we’ve sealed our aircraft indoors now’ added in to the mix.

I’ve often mentioned this here, but I well remember the Me410 and Fw190 running their engines on airshow mornings at St Athan-now one is at Hendon, and one is at Cosford, both dead as doornails. Why, for God’s sake? And need I mention ‘Black 6’?!

    What a great set-up!

I guess it would be scuppered by all sorts of health and safety rules, but I’ve always thought a superb idea for shows would be to have a real- perhaps de-tuned- Merlin fitted into a good replica Spit fuselage, all on a large trailer behind decent barriers, with Joe Public being able to pay a reasonable fee to get in and start the thing up himself for a few minutes. I bet we’d all queue for tickets for that one! What do you all reckon?!

    RE: Hendon

    😀 Very good!

This ridiculous situation with such a fine warbird being made to look so daft has to be remedied though-and think of the costs for the museum, keeping the Lanc up on that perch-have they no idea how much seed a Lancaster can eat in a day?!

    RE: Trenton Halifax Pictures

    Money, of course!

But they SO need to restore that plane, even if it means it’s off show for however long-it would still be a genuine Halifax, and one that had a real history, and it should stand proud next to the Lanc and Wimpey. Then all we need to find is a Stirling somewhere, and put it in there in place of the Valiant!!!
