RE: Trenton Halifax Pictures
GREAT pictures, thanks-this babe is really (and rightly) going to show up the RAF Museum when she’s done…
RE: A couple of ‘Dambusters’ questions
Re. Steve’s point about how far this sort of censoring of the past will go, it reminds me of a sequence in some Arthur C Clarke book or other, where two characters are at work for a company in the near-future, digitally removing all traces of people smoking from famous old films! Now, while I happen to be anti-smoking myself, I reckon that sort of cuckoo-minded act isn’t that far away…
RE: A couple of ‘Dambusters’ questions
Congrats Ashley, I’m hapily married myself and know just how great it is!
As for ‘Nigger’, I’ve never noticed it being edited on TV before-sounds *****y daft to me though. I was always under the impression that the ‘hit and run’ thing was an invention, and that in fact the occupants of the car were injured themselves when they tried to avoid Nigger in the road? Anyone?
Lancs used in the film were as follows-
NX673
NX679
NX782
RT686
All were fully airworthy Mk.VII’s, and all four were sold at the end of filming for scrap to British Aluminium Co., 17th July 1956. I believe Lincolns were used in the backgrounds of some shots to make up numbers.
RE: Avro Lancaster R5679
Nice one Neilly, you beat me to it! Though my source has a couple of the names marginally different-
j E Duffield, and t R Bevan.
RE: Lancaster
Actually, that’s a good point about the Hendon B-17, now that you mention it! And they don’t raise the tail of that into the air on a budgie perch, do they?!
RE: Lancaster
I meant on the WHOLE; we didn’t have hundreds of the buggers in the RAF going off on bombing raids, that’s what I mean! And just how many B-17’s do you see in Coastal Command colours these days, hmm?!
RE: Lancaster
You are absolutely right David, and it’s that self-interest that is fueling the building of ever-more 51’s, at the expense of anything a little more interesting. My point is though that we in the UK didn’t operate B-17’s, but are interested in them-the Americans didn’t operate the Lanc, so don’t bother to learn about it, and just assume that what they did in WW2 was the be-all and end-all of it.
RE: Money Talks
Absolutely, it’s all down to money. But, if the money is there to buy a P-51 willy-nilly, why the hell don’t these people just by a ‘real’ one? (If there’s any such thing left, after all these years of racing versions and rebuilds etc etc) It’s no sense to argue that these new-build 51’s will help with the future supply of spares etc either-why not just build spares?
Unfortunately, I’m very much of the opinion that the Americans really do think that they won the war single-handedly, so every person there wants their own personal P-51 etc. I think it’s a waste of time and effort, as do most of the other posts here, but there you go, we’re only warbird enthusiasts, so what do we know? After all, apparently the P-51 was the best fighter of WW2, and the B-17 was the best bomber!!! And then people wonder why it annoys me when I hear of the CWH Lanc roaring over a North American airshow to general lack of interest when no one knows what it is!!!
RE: speaking of Lancaster ground runs…
Nice-it looks to me like you’ve started with the basic old Airfix kit, but you must have worked hard to lose the mid-upper turret fairing-all your own work, or a conversion kit?
RE: Modular Engines
If the Tornado is whooshing about with down-rated engines, I’d love to see one that’s had a tune-up!!!
RE: Lancaster NX622 engine run
Hmm, point taken! Well, let’s get ’em all indoors and roll our sleeves up and get cracking then, shall we?!
RE: Hendon
Yes, I mean, when you enquire about the times that food is served to the people on the desk at the BoB hall, and they laugh and tell you to not bother as the food is massively over-priced, lower than hospital quality rubbish, then you know it’s bad!
RE: speaking of Lancaster ground runs…
Nice pictures! I used to do stuff like this, too. I got out of aircraft modelling for a long while, and more into scratchbuilding my own stuff (I’ve just completed a four foot long model of Donald Campbell’s ‘Bluebird K7’ for example) but I’ve recently tracked down a Tamiya 1/48 ‘Sugar’ kit, which was like a real blast from the past when I received it and saw all those lovely big Lanc parts again! I’ve been buying my way through the detailing and decal sets for the kit, so that when I finally put it together, it’ll be a good’un. I wasn’t sure at first which way I should go with it-operational, weather-beaten Sugar, or Hendon Sugar, and I think so far the Hendon option is winning! And no, I’m NOT going to display her tail-high on a budgie perch!!!
The last 1/72 stuff I did was to build a BIG model of a lot of the Bomber Hall in Hendon! I had the Lanc, Wellington, Halifax wreck, B17, Vulcan, B25, Mosquito, all laid out on a huge base in my attic, all painted up like the floor of the Bomber Hall. This was years ago now and I’ve since sold the model, but I’d love to tackle it again some day!
RE: Lancaster NX622 engine run
Just as the RAF saw sense and brought all it’s Spitfires and Hurricanes in from the cold a a few years back, NO Lancaster should be left outside, no matter how carefully ‘looked after’, as there are precious fe wof them and they should all be saved, NOW. But here’s a thought-big as it is, can one country support the restoration of so many Lancs? There are only so many bits and pieces about you know!
RE: Slipstream!!
…I WAS only kidding, by the way!
