Of course, asides from the area closures and awful lighting, it’s worth mentioning that other word that is forever linked to Hendon- ‘food’. Okay, so most of us know about the pubs etc in the surrounding area- I mean, you simply have to, otherwise poisoning or starvation are your only other options- but really, outside contractors or not, the food there is DISGUSTING, in all ways- poor quality, over-priced, etc.
I must say, the last few times I’ve been were the first visits after quite a gap, and I was surprised at the change in the staff; many of them seemed young and it was ‘just a job’; I’ve overheard a lot of inter-staff bitching in the shop more than once, and have even heard someone there seriously mocking the exhibits once. This minded me of the good old days when the shop was staffed by lovely helpful old ladies in cardigans!
The place really just ain’t what it used to be, not even close, and I’d go so far as to say that they no longer deserve to hold some of the very special exhibits that they have.
I’m Flyin’ It
‘Do you want flies with that?’
I’ve read all of Jack’s books, and they’re all a great read, for differing reasons. LT remains the greatest one though, a stunning tale of an operational tour.
Fingers crossed re. cdp206 finding his tapes!
It’s ridiculous- I don’t know if it had a bad editor, or someone perhaps ran it through a really inept spell-checker and just left all the queried/ammended words in! West Malling became ‘West Malting’ several times over, to say nothing of the dozens and dozens of other very silly mistakes I spotted. It bothered me because I’d hate to think of anyone buying LT for the first time (and really, it’s required reading on the subject) and seeing all those mistakes and thinking that they were down to the late Jack.
Hope you find them, Chris!
Incidentally, after years of reading my well-thumbed Goodhall version of LT, I’ve started reading my pristine Crecy version, the newer one with the photos in- but it’s absolutely riddled with typos though! It’s really quite shocking, there are so many silly mistakes in it. What a shame!
I wish I could see whatever the ‘BBC documentary The Lancaster Legend’ is; it’s been mentioned on the cover of just about every reprint of ‘Lancaster Target’ for years, and I’ve never seen the blasted thing!
It would be interesting to know what sort of research goes into recreating a nose art like this; of course there’d be the gathering of all known images of the aircraft in question, but then, those photos might not always be all that clear; so presumably, some enhancement goes on? And some work to establish the correct colours? Chatting to anyone who remembers the actual aircraft? And then, the actual painting process would be interesting to know about too?
Fluffy/anyone?
The circular bit is a gas patch, isn’t it? Will ‘474 carry this too I wonder?
‘East Kirby’? Never heard of it! That anywhere near East Kirkby, then?! 😀
‘Flight of The Blenheim’ continues to go down very well here, too.
I would imagine that there’s a few people at Duxford who could name you Blenheim parts with their eyes shut?!
I remember it well, from the days when I was able to regularly attend shows; it was just one of the regualr staples, with the BBMF, Vulcan, Vintage pair, Shackelton…those were the days!
She was always a lovely mover around the sky.
Heh, I’ve got this too, also bought many, many moons ago. It’s still a great recording though, with Sqdn Ldr Scott Anderson starting the old girl up etc. Best played with headphones turned WAAAAY up!!!
Also tucked away with mine is an off-the-air recording that was on Radio 1 once, of Simon Bates(!) first interviewing Sqdn Ldr Colin Patterson, and then going for a flight in ‘474, live on air! (Later on in the same show he goes up in a Tornado, and is sick!!!!)
Not sure I’ve even got the ability to play a tape now though!
Yup; watched it again this afternoon, too!
