…then I shall buzz you all with my mighty Memorial Flight…6 Merlins, followed up from the rear by that American thing, too…
😉
Eh? I was referring to the thread overall!
Oh, joy; another Hollywood lash-up that distorts all the truth, with the same couple of Spitfires and Merlin-engined baddies again. :rolleyes:
All the figures were new when it was relaunched as the ‘BoB Experience’ some years ago now-while others play sounds etc etc, the only two with the projected faces are Winston (upstairs, by the entrance to the Sunderland) and the lady downstairs, who’s name I do believe is ‘Gertie’.
Yes, the dread salt water is going to lower chances; what are the odds of finding a Stirling in fresh water somewhere? 🙁
they managed to bring a Hally back to Yorkshire for anyone to admire (enthusiasts and veterans).
No, they didn’t, they built something that looks like a Halifax; they didn’t build a Halifax! THAT is the difference I’m always protesting about!!! :rolleyes:
You won’t believe I’m about to say this, but, never mind ‘another’ Lancaster, we have some of those, we really need to find a decent Stirling-there must be one somewhere!
Yup, the are locks in there on Robbo’s shot.
No way would the BBC have messed about adding the image of ‘474’s undercart to ‘611 just because of a pair of not very noticable, particularly to Joe Public, locks!
Wow, very impressive! Any more like that? 🙂
STILL looks like a giant finished Airfix!
I hope my diagram above at least shows that while yes, of course this is a good achievement that may well mean something to the ex-Hallibag boys, this thing is NOT a Halifax!!! :p
The ‘VR’ and ‘A’ are a little out of place; it just looks wrong. I once knew a guy who had talked with Norm Etheridge, one of the people responsible for the restoration; he said that the guy who had applied the codes had simply masked them up wrongly.
Re. the colours, maybe the Canadian Lancs camo really was this dark, but the green and brown still looks all ‘wrong’, to me anyway.
The Frecnh Lanc IS looking wonderful.
Hmm, wrongly positioned squadron codes, (By their own admission) odd looking shades of camoflage (Yes, I know they came from ‘original paint chips’, but still) and a simply dreadful ‘nose art’ with that medal thing on each side.
Ah well, each to their own! 😉
Crikey, it worked! Bit small though, sorry!
Oh, and the tailplane is a mix of new and old; mostly new.
Okay, diagram this is reproduced from Elvington’s own booklet, ‘The Unbeaten Warrior Returns’. (Which is pretty disgusting re. it’s heavy anti-Lancaster rhetoric, by the way) I’ve put on a quick overlay, keyed as follows-
RED= Original Halifax parts
GREEN= Entirely new build
The rest-the wings, engines, centre section-we know about. The Hastings parts actually aren’t a straight swap for the Halifax, either.
Well, you could be pedantic for a chuckcle and say that actually, bit of her has flown recently-after all, what was her tail doing if not flying for those ‘Night Flight’ runs a few years back?!
But I was under the impression that her spar would need replacing PA474-style too, and I think it’s perfectly sensible to maintain her as the wonderful attraction that she is; she’ll last damn near forever this way!
I don’t think there have been any high-speed runs on the old runway since then, have there?
There was talk of the CWH Lanc coming over for a tour years ago, but they decided against it in the end, and I don’t even think it’s an option for them now. Plus, and I really don’t mean to sound horrible here, but I think that looks-wise, ‘ours’ would show the CWH Lanc up a little in terms of paint finish and looks!
Did we ever get a cause of that taxi-prang when the CWH Lanc just ran into the Dakota there?
😮
