We have secured the use of a hangar or the aerojumble, though cockpiteers/ aerojumblers will have the choice on the day whether they go in there, or outside in front of the control tower, where they will get a better view of the flying. There will also be a display of aircraft in the hangar, with a Boulton Paul ‘Museum for the day’. If anyone requires a table for their use in the hangar, they will have to book it in advance, as we won’t have any on site
Details of the event, including a new picture of the Overstrand cockpit, which will attend, can be found on http://www.wolverhamptonairport.co.uk where you will also find the requisite information should you be flying in your cockpit, there being half price landing fees on the day.
Depends where you’re coming from, Ian.
CockpitsWest 2012
It has been decided that there will be an aerojumble as part of the event, stalls being free. If you bring a cockpit you will be in front of the control tower, if not then you will be sited by the hangars. Please book a site at alecbrew@hotmail.co.uk
I would say that CA310 does not have a Balliol u/c, or at least has one which is less than pristine. This is the aircraft which the Shuttleworth Trust thought was ‘cobbled together’. Nice paint scheme, though – hides a multitude of sins, no doubt.
Figures for the Defiant 1 on file at Boscombe Down
were
5,000ft 1,515 ft./min and 294 mph
10,000ft 1,610 ft/min and 312 mph
15,000ft 1,240 ft/min and 305.5 mph
20,000ft 805 ft/min and 295 mph
26,000ft 285 ft/min and 266.5 mph
One slight change to the event, it has acquired an ‘S’. It is now CockpitsWest at the Autumn Wings & Wheels Fly-in. It has also included a turrets section, with the Overstrand turret, a BP Type D and the possibility of a BP Type C. Anyone who wishes to bring their turret along, to the first ever TurretFest, please e- mail me on alecbrew@hotmail.co.uk
I’m Black and Gold through and through, not the dreadful Sandwell United. I’ll look forward to seeing you at the Green.
Displaying the Phantom on 16th Sept and watching the Wolves the day before are not mutually exclusive, the Molineux is only 30-40 minutes from Halfpenny Green. Deposit the cockpit, and then go and watch Leicester. You will be back in plenty of time to drown your sorrows. (The last time I saw the Wolves play Leicester it was a sad and sorry experience)
Alan, if that is the Type C turret you are thinking of bringing, I have been hoping to see it for the last 20 years. I might bring my Type D and they can sit next to the Overstrand turret, and we’ll have a Turretfest on our hands.
If anyone wishes to come, or needs more details, just pm me or write to alecbrew@hotmail.co.uk
Eighteen years ago the Shuttleworth Trust sent a team out to Sri Lanka to look at the Balliols with a view to buying one, and adding it to their RAF trainers collection. CA302 in the Museum was not available, but when they looked at CA310 they found it in very bad condition internally, ‘cobbled together’ was a phrase one of the team used. It would have taken an immense restoration effort to get it airworthy, which was the intention, and the price asked was way over the top, so they came home and dropped the idea. Another 18 years outside in the Sri Lankan weather will not have improved either of them.
I forgot to say earlier how much I was glad that Bob Dunn & Co, won for their fabulous Hunter, a long overdue win in my opinion, but you do realise that they have raised the bar quite considerably. Not only did they bring a historic aircraft, they bought the matching historic pilot to go with it ! Now that has set something of a challenge for the rest of us !
I have sympathy for my ‘neighbours’ Rich & Max with their smashing Chippie cockpit, they deserved to be more in the thick of things. Perhaps it’s my fault as I did not tell Bill what I was bringing, so he had to make allowances for almost anything, and was surprised by our minimalist Grasshopper/Flexiform. I think he thought I might be bringing the Overstrand (maybe next year).
Here’s an idea, though. Why couldn’t they be moved once the layout became apparent ? I’m sure everyone would have helped them up-sticks, and they could easily have gone next to the shop (In easy reach of the warmth of the cafe). I’m sure Bill would not mind his planned layout being tweaked, but perhaps it should be made clear that this is possible.
Flexiform Striker G-MJIA.
I was absolutely gutted that the Grasshopper did not win an award, as the only cockpit there which was 100% original and 100% complete ! No, I hope our minimalist cockpits raised a smile or two. I certainly smiled when reading the Thread about the various ways to move cockpits. I just picked them up and put them on the trailer ! Simples !

The Vulcan flew north along the M.6 next to Otherton Airfield (Penkridge, Staffs) and then seemed to circle Stafford in a leisurely manner. Anyone know what it was doing there, and where it had come from south of there ? Had it been to Cosford I am wondering ?
