Due to the strategic defence review the government insisted that as ammunition costs were rising, all aircrew were taught to arm wrestle as a primary method of self defence. :diablo:
Great stuff.
Can you elaborate more on the condition of the Herald please? Is there a restoration/maintenance plan for it?
As blue 2 says she’s not in the best of health. I have not seen inside her but externally she is definitely showing signs or wear, we noticed on Sunday that one of the nose wheel door brackets had delaminated completely!! Also the engine access panels are hanging down, I am not sure if the engines are the same as the ones she landed with, there are however some fantastic birdsโ nests in the engine bays now ๐ฎ
There is talk of some minor remedial work and a repaint but I am not sure due to the cost of if and when this will happen.
Don’t I look a pillock :p
However these drills are carried out for a reason not just having a laugh.
Because we often carry out anti det runs and hopefully in the future more thunder runs our evac drills must be carried out in conjunction with the museum fire service once a year. The potential for disaster with four Speyโs running on an old and complex aircraft should not be underestimated.
There are miles of 40 year old wiring for example, that is now sat in all weathers slowly decaying coupled with the obvious leakages in Hydraulic fluid and fuel mean that we must always be on our guard. No ground run is ever taken lightly which is why we practice the โsod this Iโm offโ drills regularly ๐ฎ
I wasn’t aware they took Bins out on bank holidays :diablo:

A Glorious sunny day
Well yesterday was a lovely sunny morning so the Nimwits gathered early to appreciate the warm weather and partake in the butty of the bacon and coffee.
Grand plans were afoot as the museum had to move most of her big girls (no not the Victor team) to make way for a group of people who like to dress up in second world war uniforms (and I thought my hobby was strange) So it was all hands on deck to help Andre move Lusty Lindy because, as it was well before dinner time (or lunch time for those who live down sarff) there was not a Victor bod to be seen. Lindy safely moved we turned our attentions to Kimberly the Maid of Moray, once again Nimchick was on brakes assisted by Howie Le Monkey and off we set, a slight hold up occurred when Kimโs starboard brake unit decided to eat the anti bird netting placed around the U/C leg but this was soon resolved with a few hefty tugs and pulls and Kim was parked up.
Next on the list was the Herald, or as itโs know by one and all โthat bloody Heraldโ it gets in the way on our anti det runs, its falling apart and is generally a scruffy nuisance, however we are not allowed to get rid of it so we have to put up with her. One of her nose wheel tyres was badly deflated so Baldrick and I set off to resolve this simple and menial task, wrong!!! Despite our best efforts and eventually over a 1000psi of nitrogen the tyre did not inflate!! The nitrogen went in, it did not appear to leak and yet the tyre did not inflate. There was only one thing left to do, dinner time and look whoโs sat around the table? Yup the Victor bods had finally surfaced and were trying to sit in the shade as it appears the sunlight does them no good. :p
After Dinner we wandered out to be greeted by a wonderful sight; a fuel bowser parked up next to Kim. We have been desperate for fuel for a month or 2 now and were starting to panic, as the lack of fuel was starting to affect our anti det runs and more importantly the integrity of the fuel tanks on XV250. So 2 of our team sauntered (for sauntered read, ran across quickly in case the bowser drove off) across to refuel the jet, whilst everyone else joined to make one happy team to move firstly that bloody Herald and then the Canberra.
That done it was time for the Victor and Nimrod team to have afternoon tea and Tiffin where we all tried to put the world to rights and generally had a good moan.
Donโt think we will be up to much next week as YAM is being invaded by the home guard, the 3rd battalion Basingstoke foot and mouth and the Kidderminster panzer group. ๐ฎ There might be some joint Victor & Nimrod shenanigans to be had but we will see. :diablo:
Nimchick will post photos later hopefully
i am very suprised no one picked up on this ๐
Well she did have to make sure that Trumpton did not drop her later on during the evac drills whilst strapped into the strecher ๐
Did anyone get any photo’s of the evacuation training?
Check your pm’s ๐
This coming Sunday
Don’t forget folks the next set of anti det runs for the big jets will take place this sunday (6th) at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York ๐
There is some jiggery pokery to be done on Sunday as some of the puddle jumpers need to be moved to be washed, so if tractors and towing arms float your boat get down to Yam this Sunday.
These runs by the way are regular anti det runs, and in no way part of the museums work up for deploment of certain assets to Libyan airspace ๐
nice work chaps. Well done one and all. ๐
err
Err yes the runs on both the Nimrod and the Victor DID go ahead, after lunch as planned, all went well with both A/C.
More details of the day to follow as i have just walked through the door
Tut late on parade again:p
Bring your thermals everyone, its a tad raw out here today
Careful mate Twin Otter will be getting jealous of your plugging skills! As he says come see us, and come say hi too. We’re a friendly bunch and don’t bite. Well not after lunch when we’ve been fed, anyway! ๐
Not plugging mate, I see it as more of a public service announcment ๐ Would not want anyone to miss out would we?
Will you lot be in before lunch anyway?
Anti Det Day
Don’t forget folks tomorrow is ground running day at Yam :D:D:D:D
Why not come along and see and hear the big jets make some noise :diablo::
Don’t forget there are loads of other aircraft to see and things to do (even if unfortunately some exhibits are crammed into the hangar during the winter months to help preserve them)
And finally for the bods out there that ‘do Facebook’ both Lindy and Kimberley have their own dedicated pages. Search for Nimrod MR2 XV250 and Handley Page Victor XL231 Lusty Lindy for photos and info on these Warbirds
I’ve just been told it is all after lunch, the Rod will definitely be doing full engine runs assuming she’s serviceable, however we might only be doing wet/dry runs depending if there’s anything happening on the airfield. As sadly the airfield owners take offence to us blasting their clients as they enter the airfield! Still, better than nowt I’m sure you’ll agree! ๐ anyway be sure to come and say hello Ukaviator.
Of course we are flippin servicable:rolleyes: Just watch that come back and bite me on my MAD boom on Sunday:o
Was down today just checking bits and bobs including the Victor Artouste Genny ๐ all appears well with both girls
We are hoping to run around about 13:30, this is for 2 reasons a/ dinner has settled and b/ The forecast rain has poked off
