    Bump.

I’ve created a petition at the Nr 10 Downing St website which can be accessed at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/northolt/. Maybe we can stop this industrial vandalism?

F4 Great Idea. Just signed it.

You need to contact your local conservation officer. According to my notes, Types A and C Hangers and Watch Office at Northolt were originally recommended for Grade II statutory protection, but this recommendation was withdrawn (requested by the MoD). Buildings 13 (workshops), 27 (Operations Block), 66 and 67 (Barrack Blocks) will all be demolished.

Forget about English Heritage getting involved. They’ve walked away from doing any more work/damage (depending on your point of view). How big is building 27? Perhaps it could be dismantled and moved elsewhere. Only a suggestion?

I understand that (according to the RAF News), they have already started to demolish some of the buildings. AND remember the reason why this is happening is because the MoD plan to close Uxbridge, which will also be demolished – only the underground BoB Ops Room is safe.

You know what might work – painting that “thing” – you know that work of art and sticking a plastic FSM of a Red Arrow Hawk on top – you could even get it to rotate.

Strange no one has mentioned the Beverley

    Oooops

Considering the trust of your latest Pegasus engines are in the region of 20 to 24,000 pounds trust x 4 – that would equate to a maximum all up weight of just 36 metric tons, I doubt if it would have worked. Even the Rolls Royce Medway was rated lower. Or, am I missing some vital piece of information.

No matter, I would still be courteous enough to offer ’em a blindfold – before shooting the bar stewards (as is basdards). Every year around this time I always feel desperately guilty at not doing my bit – to serve one’s country and these low life do this. Yer, “execution party – attention!”

Ever since Gerald Coulson painted Operation Jericho (Amiens Riad), I’ve always thought that the mission would make an excellent TV drama. Now that the CGI technology has become more affordable, I’m more convinced than ever that such projects is viable.

The cgi footage relating to this message is excellent and I’m not ashamed to admit it that the penny didn’t drop until the 3rd or 4th reply. I believe the knack in using CGI is to make the camera angles and shots as plain as possible. Pearl Harbor was a lesson in what not do to.

Talking about cgi and aviation dramas, the recent article in Flypast on the SAR rescue by RAF Leconfield’s Whirlwind would also make an excellent drama. Anyone else got a good idea for a CGI aided TV drama?

I hope they have digitally removed the park cars and overhead microphones that appear in the first episode.

I hasten to add that access to the hangars is via the airfield – west of the main entrance to the camp, which is still owned by the MoD and cannot be used to access the hangar site.

I believe I may be able to answer that.

At the Midland Air Museum we also have a Hind. Big ugly egg beater but very aggresive looking.

I commented once on the horrible colour of the cockpit and was told that the colour was discovered by the Russians to be the most soothing and relaxing colour for its aircrew after conducting some trials.

Now I may be having my leg pulled but the daftness of it does make it seem plausible.

Maybe others can confirm or deny the story?

Green is used in hospitals and prisons (especially on death row) and does calm people down.

WOW indeed. I doubt if you’d get better shots paying £20 to get into an airshow. Well done.

    Hello Phillip

Are you saying in part of your text that once English Heritage (EH) did a survey of the buildings at Driffield and other aerodromes and as a result EH decided not to list a particular building, then the building which was not listed by EH could not be considered again for listing and/or that the owner could also use the EH Survey against future requests for listing of that building?

When EH first looked at RAF West Raynham (preferred over RAF Driffield), the MoD stated they didn’t want West Raynham included in a list of recommendations contained in a draft report published in 2000. As a result of these objects made by the MoD, West Raynham was removed. On most sites only a few buildings were recommended for listed status, but site like West Raynham and Bicester most of the buildings were recommended for listed status.

However, now that West Raynham has been sold off there is nothing to stop EH from reinstating its original recommendations. However, the land owner can secure a COI or Certificate of Immunity preventing a building from being listed.

At Driffield EH walked away from Driffield stating they could not recommend that any of the buildings be listed, even though it was declared a close second to RAF West Raynham. EH should have gone back to Driffield and made an effort to include Driffield but decided not to. In recent times I have tried to secure listed status for the buildings, but both EH refused to support my requested for list status, while the local conservation officer refused to get involved due to the commercial nature of the site, which was being sold. I understand that the hangars are safe for the time being.

The response from EH to my letter reproduced above was cryptic to say the least. They are adamant that their work is done, yet they have admitted to me in the past that they are currently looking at a control tower in the New Forest (at the former RAF Ibsley) that does not appear on the thematic review.

I could probably of put that question better, but would be interested to know, as I am trying to get two buildings of historical interest listed in my village, one EH have surveyed and a Report with their recommendations is going to the Secretary of State. However the other building, our village pub, which changed hands in 1746 and obviously existed before then, I was having difficulty to get the building listed with my 200 year old history in my original application.

Because I now have the earlier history back to 1746 and more information since my initial listing application, EH advise that the listing application can be reconsidered because of new information. Also I spoke to a Heritage Advisor and she recommended making a fresh application with all the information I have relating to the building and appeal if listing is turned down again.

    Regards Mark

Don’t give up. Has your pub been altered to any great extent? Try your local council’s conservation team. They can do wonders. More later through PM.

If you go to the local history section in Hull’s central library, they have a locally published book on RAF Sutton on Hull. Excellent read.

Philip – you might well find that one former Queens Flight Andover had her nose cut off and the remainder scrapped a number of years ago! Maybe it’s a little late to start the crusade!

That was one XS790. Two others survive.

Apparently both Queen’s Flight aircraft (now based in various parts of Africa) are no longer in service. THEY MUST BE SAVED. Problem is the aircraft are owned by who, details of ownership change from day to day. Actually that’s not really true, but if feels like it.
