    Thanks everyone,

There would have been a greater selection of photos but I was too hot to watch the entire show,

And thanks LesB, for the info on Terry Cairns, a great display which I will remember for a long time. 🙂

    Thanks SINE MORA,

The Hastings was perhaps not best aircraft for me to pick!

How about the CASA 2111, Merlin engines, strong Duxford link with both the film Battle of Britain and the original conflict. Plus the aircraft needs a complete rebuild anyway!

The IWM don’t have to fly or taxy a/c to produce a living museum, it’s already being done for them by OFMC, TFC, Caroline Grace et al.
    .

Duxford would be far weaker as an attraction for both the public and enthusiast alike without these groups/individuals, but whats stopping the IWM from making more of its own exhibits. Four engines turning on the HP Hastings , or a ground run from the Oxford would be good places to start , both would become unique features to Duxford without the sole survivor tag. After all once the Airspeed Oxford is suspended in the new Air Space building its roll as an educational research subject is going to be somewhat negated.

    David,

I totally agree, the proposed ground running exhibit will need to be carefully maintained, and parts checked and replaced on a regular basis, but a few select types that are cared for by qualified engineers should be able to be successfully run on a limited number of event days throughout the season.

If the aircraft is the sole survivor of a type I would not advocate that it should be returned to running condition, but if the systems and engine components are replaceable then I see no reason why it should not be ground run. Original parts removed or replaced in the process can always be refitted in the future. To me the days of the purely static aviation museum are numbered, museums need to move with the times if they are to captivate and spawn another generation of enthusiasts.

The point I would like to make regarding the IWM’s policy on its aircraft exhibits is:

Should the museum solely rely on its private Vintage/Warbird operators to keep the site active. I personally don’t think it should, the IWM should occasionally show case its own exhibits, whether it be in the form of a photoday /roll out or an engine run. One day Duxford may not be home to the vast numbers warbirds that currently reside within its historic boundary fence, measures should be made within its own collection to ensure that the public and enthusiasts alike will want to return throughout the course of a year.

I have attached an image of the former St Athan RAFM Me410 to show what can be done when it comes to keeping exhibits alive. (Photo 1988)

Capel Le Ferne, Elham, and the Jackdaw are within twenty minutes of each other, also well worth a visit is the Kent Battle of Britain museum at Hawkinge.
I had planned to make it along to the Bleriot landing site at Dover, but I was just a bit short on time after my visit to the Jackdaw!

    Contrailjj,

Glad you like the photos, I wish I could schedule the weather, despite being under drought restrictions in the South East of England it rained today right on cue for the opening day of Wimbledon. 😀

Weren’t the Victors tankers were also jury riiged with cameras during the Falklands war. The IWM example depicted here is the sole surviving Mk 1.
