Thanks Airbedane for the fascinating insight into your time in the Fury.

After reading through your notes, I can now see why the Fury spent so long in the hangar!

When I first saw the aircraft at Booker in the early 90’s I seem to remember that the aircraft had a very small fuel tank, which drastically limited the aircrafts range, was this still in place or has the tank been changed and has this had an effect on the Cof G.

Given that the Fury is still for sale, and that Chris Morris and his fellow engineering team at Old Warden know the Kestrel so well, would the collection contemplate such a purchase, or is it just too far away from the genuine Hawker product.

Although a replica it would surely be a lot cheaper than purchasing and then restoring another aircraft of similar standing.

Thanks DB,Hairyplane and all for making this thread so interesting, all we need now is Airbedane to fill in the details of flying the Fury.

Its hard to believe a request for the clarification of a few dates has turned into such a debate!

what i found most strange about the whole Fury saga was why the aircaft failed to display in the UK after gaining its permit, a great pity.

The Fury replica was constructed with a welded fuselage frame and wooden wing spars. When Bellamy and his team constructed the Fury, they could not justify the expense of manufacturing the machinery and tooling required to replicate the Hawker manufacturing process.

Thanks everyone for all the input on this thread.

This thread seems to have cleared up the two conflicting dates that I have for the aircrafts departure from the UK. I had not realised that the aircraft spent some time at Duxford.

The Fury departed Old Warden on 11 June 2003.

The Fury left the UK on 24 June 2003, piloted by Dirk De Splenter.

Thanks for the great pictures Stieglitz, Unfortunately I think the picture selection has already been decided.

David, do you know how much flight tests were carried out.?

Did Jameson live in the Village of Outwood in Surrey, as I may have a lead on the whereabouts of the car.

    What a bloody shame. 🙁

I hope that this is not a growing trend. How many more of these historical airfields will end up as housing/industrial estates. 😡 🙁

    Cheers

    Paul

Just look at Hawkinge, gradually being swallowed up by a vast housing estate, a planning application for 200 houses on the edge of Kenley is also about to be decided upon.

Will never forget West Malling, a superb airshow venue full of atmosphere. I can well remember my old Ford Capri breaking down at West Malling! Last to leave that year, with the help of a ‘very nice man’.

Don’t forget ‘Control Column’ the magazine that first recorded the comings and goings of aircraft preservation.

As for Flypast-Aeroplane, their horses for different courses and compliment each other well, although I feel Flypast has lost the lead it once had in terms of Preservation news. The recent G-ASXX Lancaster article was superb though.

I first met Robert Rudhall at the Great Warbirds Air display in the late 80’s, our meeting was no fluke, Robert had kindly responded to a classified ad I had placed in Flypast regarding the Battle of Britain film.

From that initial meeting a strong friendship grew, over the years I got to know that there was far more to Robert than the Battle of Britain film. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Robert, if he could help someone he would, whatever the task set.

Although I have enjoyed going to numerous airshows across the UK this year, I have greatly missed the company of RR, many a dull moment at DX was enlivened by his razor sharp comments, and anecdotes of his earlier preservation involvements, from his time at Skyfame and CARG, thru his work with Aircaft Illustrated, Aeroplane Monthly and finally Key publishing and Flypast.

Melvin mentioned earlier about Robs hatred of flying in anything other than a Lancster, reminded me that Rob is one of a very select few to have flown on both the BBMF and CWH Lancs.

The one aspect of Robert that I will always remember will be his enthusiasm, after attending airshows for close on 40 years the interest never waned, wether he was standing in a muddy field or on a Flypast asignment flying with John Fairey.

For me Robert was an inspiration, but above all he was one of lifes true gentleman.

There was also a Merlin engined car entered for the Brighton Speed trials in the 1950’s, sadly I can’t remember its name or what became of it.
