I’ve come to this thread relatively late, over the next few days I’ll have look through my archive for G-BJZZ…..

Falcon 109, the crash landing shot just look at those perfect prop blades!!

This first photograph shows the aircraft in the Whitehall Theatre of War in around 1983.

This second shot was taken in either 1989-90 at the superb Classic Fighters display. By this time the aircraft had been rebuilt for Charles Church, If I remember rightly the pilot was the late Reg Hallam.

This last shot was taken at Biggin Hill in 1990.

    Regarding the Buchon models.

1:72 Pegasus. Short run injection kit, pretty poor when you look at it now but reasonable 25 years ago. Hard to find kit now.

1:72 Classic Plane. Short run injection kit. They made various Ha 1112 M1L, Spanish and Battle of Britain Film colours, they also did the two seater and Ha 1112 K1L in the film markings of Stern von Afrika. Should still be possible to find via this website.

1:48 Hobbycraft injection kit available in both Spanish and Battle of Britain markings. Should still be able to find one on ebay etc..

1:48 Academy injection kit, I believe this is a re boxed hobbycraft kit. still easily available.

    Thanks Anna,

    And thank you, Martin,

I really struggled with the Gnats, this was the best of a bad bunch. they were too distant and light was particularly bad at the time. As for the ghosting the D300 has an issue with anything red, I will have a go at reprocessing the shot tomorrow.

    Thanks Guys,

Just waiting for the much hyped heat wave now, as the two displays I have attended this year have both made photographing aircraft somewhat challenging.

You guys are starting to catch on, remember I said it was built NOT by LAME’s or AME’s or even aviation people but by USA movie set carpenters and that I suspect is part of the problem.

As I understand it an experimental category registered aircraft can be built by any person. It may not have been constructed by aircraft engineers but the fact is it still had meet a required build quality that its pilots/operators were happy with. If I remember rightly, the Vimy had undergo some extensive test flying.

If I were attempting to fly the Atlantic in it, I would have ensured everything was just so, regardless of who had built it. In someways i’m sure this Vimy is far better constructed than the original examples.

I’m guessing it would extremely expensive to obtain a Permit to fly from the CAA, given the number of modifications they are likely to require. Is the any precedent that the Vimy team can look to for help.

    Thanks Blue Max,

I had forgot the aircraft was still on the US experimental register. Your answer makes a lot of sense.

If only there was some form of CAA exemption available that would allow the aircraft to operate in the vicinity of its home base only whilst maintaining its experimental status.

Surely, if it went to Old Warden, they’d have to build a new hangar tall enough to accomodate it?

I did say in an ideal world, how tall is the new hangar at Old Warden. In any case an aerodrome can never have enough hangars.

Out of interest has any considered where the Vimy be hangared when it does eventually go to Brooklands after its period of display at Duxford.

The Bellman hangar on the old finishing straight at Brooklands is in pretty poor condition, and it would be a crying shame to put a perfectly serviceable aircraft in there for too long.

In an ideal world I would love to see the aircraft operated out of Old Warden, like the British Aerospace collection of Cirrus Moth, Anson and Blackburn B2. The Vimy would fit in superbly with the Bristol fighter et al.

In someways Shuttleworth and Brooklands are very alike, with the collection encompassing cars, motorcycles and aircraft. A Spirit Of Brooklands aircraft operated by the Shuttleworth collection would in my opion be an excellent opportunity for the two collections to combine on special event days etc. Lets just hope the Brooklands museum are not too hasty in taking a decision to ground this superb machine.:(

The last I heard was that the Vimy was operating out of Oxford Airport, but it was also seen at Meppershall in Bedfordshire last Summer.

A grass landing strip was in the original plan for Mercedes Benz World complex that’s adjacent to the Brooklands Museum, but I don’t think this has ever been laid out.

Lets put a call out to Melv, hopefully he can clear up these Vimy rumours.

Heres the Vimy at last years Dunsfold show.

Unfortunately the Jackdaw has had several major refurbishments over the years, changing the appearance dramatically from its Battle of Britain film days. When I visited in the late 80’s its was externally unchanged from its film appearance.

The Jackdaw has just reopened BTW.

I took this shot in June 2006.

    Thanks Top Gun,

Do you know when the Buffalo is due to go into the museum hangars as it looked as though there was a space next to the B25.

    All the best
