I would agree, in general, except to say that I am not sure how I would feel and react in those circumstances and but I would add that the use of tear gas or water hoses to quell a riot would be far preferable.

Very much so. The future is now uncertain in Egypt, Bahrain and Syria as well as Libya and as you imply perhaps the eventual new regimes will not be to the West’s liking at all. And then what do we do?

The figures (800 involved, 200 arrested) are irrelevant, the facts are that these marches end in disgusting and completely out of control behaviour and the damage or defacing of high profile public and private property.
The march organisers are well aware at the low-life element they have tagging on to the back of these demonstrations which in the last few times has been widely circulated on the internet.
In my mind the orgainsers should be then responsible for cleaning up and paying for the damage, and certainly paying for the massive policing of these events.

I have been suggesting something similar for years. In fact the punishment of those found guilty should literally fit the crime. You break a window, you help to repair it and instead of paying a fine to the court, compensation is paid directly to the owner of the premises vandalised.

I like the circularity of this in that the criminal causes damage to an object which represents the target of his protest then he has to pay compensation to the very organisation or individual he is protesting against.
