I recall that as well but never wondered why. And of course we were often treated to the party piece STOL – the short landing with masses of noise and smoke from the reversers, the reverse turn trough 180o and the thundering short take-off in the opposite direction to the landing. Fantastic!:D

Well analysed. I had forgotten that the F16 was contemporary so I suppose that fly-by-wire will always be superior in terms of manoeuvrability. And it will never have flown at Red Flag or Tiger Meets unless the Swedes were invited as guests.
