Well said Mark
Just for the record I think James should have to fly from the UK to Australia in the back (jump) seat of a P51 D model just to show us HIS pioneering spirit.

Phill;
Just to comment on a couple of things.
Oscar only owns the Avenger not the Sea Fury – thats based in the same hanger at Archerfield but owned by FlyingFighters museum.
“Must have cost you a bomb Oscar, to have both the Avenger/ Seafury at Avalon , or do they pay upp!.”
“When sitting under Connie one Show
A dude told me how much a hour, but I can not really remember what he said now, I think he said about $10,000.Oz.”
Yes it must be around that to keep her going – a lot anyway and with petrol going up the way it has it won’t be getting any cheaper …..
“Man that must be fun
Flying from the State’s, Do ya tingle a little and think of Smithy when you are doing it sometime’s Oscar, maybe touching down at old bane……….”
Oscar will no doubt answer that one !!!
“Good Luck, on a grand adventure mate
Some show’s at Old Essendon Drome Setter(John) would be real NICE!.”
Yes it would but restricted space and the need to keep the GA happening might cause a problem but it is worth looking into – same issues with Avalon these days?
“But I don’t think the neighbour hood would be too happy
And I think it’s damn shame we don’t have MORE Spit’s .
Something just has to be done about that! “
Well Oscar does have a Spit in restoration – so he is doing something about that!!!!
Spits aren’t as popular here as in the UK where it has turned into a little gold mine and coompared to other WW11 aircraft they are a little over hyped – much better to have the diversity we have here in my opinion – you can have 2 to 4 other WW11 fighters for the UK price of a Spit so I would opt for a P40 and a P39 and a Yak 3/9 and some change plus a nice car any day .

Just for the record I think you will find that especially on the Australian flight the engines in the replica were just as big a worry as on the originals and in fact one of them destroyed itself in Indonesia and had to be replaced so I guess I am at a loss to see how this trip/s was any different to the original ones – just as hard and just as risky.

Most of what you see about you at airshows are recreations – Most people just fool themselves into thinking that they are the original aircraft whereas most of the airframe is a replica and so it should be – It doesn’t make them any less significant – just replicas so why would this be any different. Perhaps if we burt one or all of the aircraft the Vimy represents(Two are still in museums) and called it the original – would people be ant happier – I don’t think so – It is fine the way it – Good on the guys that operate this I say – true pioneers one and all!!

Agree and OW was all the better for it no doubt. Everybody also needs to remember that utilising replicas also allows the original article to reside if somewhat tackilly in a museum at Adelaide – at least the one that did the Aus trip.
Two Vimys is better than taking the original apart – throwing the bits away and building a new one and calling it the old one – Sounds familiar – I think it’s called a provinance or legalised fraud or something like that………..

Hi
Don’t start me on this replica rubbish – I love Legends and all the aircraft but most of them now (and quite properly ) are new build replicas – I am sure you are only taking the P#@s but If it looks like a duck, Quacks like an duck and forms the basic for a very nice Duck a La Orange then its a Vimy mate and thats that

Hi TJ
Oscar knows the way – He bought a B25 some years ago in partnership with some others and flew it out from the States via the Pacific – It was a very happy time for a lot of us when that B25 arrived here and flew all over the place for a few years.

Hi Oscar
You are dead right which is why this would be a major undertaking with sponsorship etc – Logistics etc would be critical – remember a lot of the Wanaka crew come big distances as well as frieghting stuff in from O/S – in fact I would think you could do worse than engage them as consultants to help run an OZ version here.
I Know the TBM must cost this amount and then the A26 and all the other stuff – you are talking big money – But it could be made to happen if we all applied some intellect to it and got the right people such as yourself involved. I don’t think there many people more qualified than you to talk about long distance warbird logistics !!!

I still remember seeing this thing come in over the sea At Nelson Bay near Newcastle – I spotted the dot in the distance and it seemed to stay a dot for hours ! When it got closer there was a hell of a row from the then Chev car engines but the aircraft just hung in the air. When you are on board it seems so different – the sound and airflow make it all seem so more imediate and exciting – from the ground it just seems to make a serene progress – very regal and unbothered – I was lucky to see quite a lot of her whilst she flew about the country. Nobody here ever thought of her as a replica and in lots of ways it was as hard or worse in this Vimy as in the original one. You have to remember that this one plane has done more than any other Vimy ever did and it is just about as fragile. I have much more respect for the builders of the original engines given the tendancy this modern day version has gone through a sucession of types/configurations.

James
Yes it was mentioned on here and WIX that there was interest in it “coming Home ” but I don’t know what happened – HARS might have been interested ?
I also heard it was being broken up for spares – Spares for what I thought -Temora ?

Well
The bush is copping a bashing at present and the NSW west could do with a bit of a pump up so How about Narromine – very historic WW11 strip and lots of accomodation in Dubbo nearby – lots of room – no airspace issues – good facilities and an active Chamber of comerce plus Council and Museum there.
Worth a thought
Good commute from Temora, Wang, Brisbane, Melb and Sydney,

Hi Melve
In 1988 I think it was i got to fly in this at Maitland NSW when it flew out here – there are some pics at http://community.webshots.com/album/140364194DUxAvW look for the vimy page. So I guess it’s used to fat old fart transporting. Funnily enough it was bearing the scars of hitting a stump in indonesia when I first saw it – Must be a bit like 109s – prone to U/C damage LOL

I suspect it’s not that hard or far off as we might think – the Boomerang and Sea Fury have already been over and the Zero and TBM came over from there as well so I guess it isn’t that hard
just take commitment and thought as well as money and planning.
