Hi Melvyn
The Mags are fine
You are obviously thinking of the -8 version with left hand thread crank handle and spiggot joint – easy to spot really – you shouldn’t critisie without looking closely.
frankvw
It is a superb model and you should be very happy with it – Melvyn just likes things painted red – it is the nature of the man…..

Hi Steve
Thanks for your facinating post – it is really informative. I will yield to the experts here to comment in detail but a few points
I hope you are right about the blue- as I said the team did research this with the AWM before it was painted and it does look great
As I said a lot of confusion about this scheme is caused by the 3 different P40s which wore these codes and colors so it is quite concievable that differences can be attributed in part to the confusion this has caused over time
I am not sure as to the correctness of the underwing roundel but your explaination seems as good as any – perhaps if you can post a photo to clarify it once and for all.
I once saw a copy of an order enforcing the repainting of Sqn Codes either in very light green or white in the desert as the darker colors were indistinct at distance – perhaps this accounts for the code color change between photos of the same aircraft? I know this is the wrong way round but I can’t think of any other explaination other than the white was then too prominant!!
The nose art was supposed to be done from a template that was reused so I don’t know why it should have varied from one machine to the other.
The windscreen was determined by the actual aircraft which was restored – that was the way it was on this former RNZAF machine. I supose they could have changed it but most wouldn’t notice and I guess it was not always known which colour scheme / identity this machine would be finished in.
The wheels – well I would have gone for P40 but remember this machine shares the hanger with a P51(CAC) and Col owned a Harvard(Does he still I didn’t see it there)(same wheels ) so I guess for servicability he chose to go with what he had and that way he has to carry only 1 wheel/tyre.
Your brothers drawing. Please don’t take offence – throughout this post I have asked that everyone provide constructive critism to assist not detract from what is a magnificent achievement in this restoration. I have written a few books and from the minute they leave your desk they are open to critical examination and I don’t take it personally I just adjust it when – if I am lucky – I get to revise it for the next reprint. No one person has the seat of all knowledge. The drawing is fine but as you say color title will have to be revised next time. As I said earlier I was told that the AWM was the source of the scheme advice so I think the discussion of the drawing is superfluous in any case – I don’t think it played a role.
Once again thanks for the insights of this post and I hope you remain involved as it progresses
.
Kindest regards

Hi Dave
It is an issue with Webshots some people have no problems others do – Sorry
Try http://community.webshots.com/user/setter125 and see if that works
Can you email me if it works – then I know it’s OK

Hi Glen
Just drive safely if you can’t catch a lift in a plane – surely with your talent there are enough owners willing to cough up a lift for some pics!!
I like your choice – the L39 seems to be a very well balanced thing. I am a Sea Fury fan myself although i would rather like one of the new Fw190s or even the La9.
I will probably be in Vietnam in Jan/Feb but I will want to be back for a few airshows and Temora / Wangarratta one weekend. Also a few new things arriving around then up here so I need to cover that as well. Oh and work expects me to attend occasionally – a real pest!

Hi Paul
Slight delay on the P47 till someone who is overseas returns to provide content/ feedback. Just a week or so
For reasons which will become apparent quite soon could you think about a painting of an RAAF Lincoln in RAAF markings on a bombimg misson over Malaya – It will be a paying comission – Please respond to my email on parkerj@launch.net.au

Hi mark
Very nice as you say.
I have decided to restore my yet to be obtained P40Z in the very rare colors of the first Stuggabzed, Royal Albanian Household Cavalary (Airborne division)
Sorry everybody, the color scheme is still so confidential (they are still in service there) only I have access to it – so whilst as always I will enjoy feedback on the markings – I won’t give a toss – so there!!! Love those Albanians – Gloss everything!!!!!
Seriously everyone thanks for the feedback here I will pass it on and do a bit more research with the AWM and RAAF.
I think we are all agreed this is a fantastic aircraft and a great result for Col and his hard working crew – Well done

Hi again Glen
Don’t ever worry about budget – we’ll just do what countless Aussie business people have been doing for centuries (well 2 anyway) – we will just use someone elses money or put it on bankcard and default!!!
First rule NEVER give your correct name
Second rule NEVER use your own money
No worries

Hi Glen
I reckon we could get the Lincoln here – rebuild it and get it back in the air so we can fly it at legends 2005 – No worries

Hi
My God What a crew – I hope these aircraft are well insured!!!
Seriously chaps – well done this is what all of us should be about.

Hi Glen
If you need any help get in touch – I love your site and would hate to see anything happen to it – I do this sort of thing for a living as well as tracking hackers and such so I may actually be able to assist.
Speaking of P40 stuff let me know what you are after.

Hi all
One other thing to remember is that the same marks were shared accross a number of aircraft (3 P40s I believe) and will obviously vary from machine to machine in some details.

Hi Mk12
I agree with your coments – the blue is a bit too dark/vivid and the gloss is a bit much but it will dull with time and be more presentable. I also feel that the detail markings can be easliy corrected. The team did consult with the AWM apparently about the markings and details – funily enough I was drawing the same conclusions about the stewart Wilson book as you at the same time!!!
Still and all it is a fantastic aircraft and will be a great sight here for many years to come.

Hi
Mk V
Bear in mind this aircraft has only just flown and a lot of detail is yet to be added – the gloss is one thing – but what specifically are the other issues as I am sure they would like to correct them before they finally finish the paint scheme – The colors don’t always come out correctly in photos but I would welcome constructive coment and I will hand it on in that spirit ie constructivly
