I figured that the crash landing at the start may have been a model. But apart from Sally B,where are the other B17’s based, and who owns them?
And as I am nosey,I would still like to know which airfield was used,as I have a particular interest in British airfields, especially in Yorkshire,(Where I live) and Lincolnshire.
Ken.
Your Dad and his many colleagues, gave us what we take for granted today, and that is freedom.I’m sorry to hear of his passing. 🙁
My deepest condolences to yourself and your family.
Ken.
And I have it as an archive. 😀
Awesome.
Ken.
Respect is too small a word sir
Couldn’t have been said any better.
Ken.
A copy of Bomber Crew,and a 2005 membership of the LLA. 😀
Ken.
The missus has just made my Christmas as well.(ooooeeeerrrr)
First she gave me ‘Bomber Crew’,which I knew I was getting, and then she presented me with an annual membership to the LLA for 2005. 😀
Life doesn’t get any better.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Ken.
Brief nevertheless, but what a beautiful sight.
Ken.
Fantastic news.
I have just come in from work in Leeds, (I live in Wakefield.) and have just logged on and found this thread.
Needless to say as I write this,BBC East is on,and they’ve just given the taster story during the 6 ‘0’ clock news. Can’t wait. 😀
Ken.
Just having a look on E.Bay and Amazon at the book,’Bomber Crew’ by Max Hastings, when the wife asked me if I would buy it. ‘Probably,’ I said.
Wife then disappears upstairs, and 2 minutes later, returns with an early Christmas present for me,1 copy of said book.Result. 😀 😀 😀
Ken.
Damn,I missed the first 25 minutes thanks to her indoors wanting to watch some rubbish on ITV with Robson Green in it,but correct me if I’m wrong,I was under the impression they were off to Canada to fly the Lancaster, not the B17,or was that the part I actually missed,or were we conned?
Ken.
Besides the fact that The Lady is in private hands, surely, the lottery would be a good place to start for funding, after all, they tend to hand money out for some rather bizzare projects in this country, (And you know the sort I mean!!!!) and as Just Jane is part of our heritage,it wouldn’t be too difficult I would have thought,to be able to secure the funds to get her airworthy again, nor for that matter, the other Lancasters that are languishing in the various museums in this country. (Parts permitting.)
Just think what a mouthwatering prospect, the sight of more than 1 British based Lancaster would be,Merlin engines a roaring across the sky……….. 🙂
Ken.
Elsham is now split in two by the approach to the Humber bridge, and on your approach to the bridge, the right hand side is mostly industrial estate, but I think that there may be some old tracks still visible once your on it.The left hand side is virtually farmland, but again, there are some tracks visible.
Both sides are linked via a roadway that goes under the main road, and if I remember correctly, one of the original hangers is still in use, albeit for industrial purposes.
Having been on the site many times in my capacity as an HGV driver,I’m quite familiar with it.
Ken.
For it’s gracefullness……..The Lancaster.
For all they did…….Spitfire and Hurricane.
Nuff said.
Ken.
The BBMF aren’t in a position to lend their Lanc out to anyone- remember, every hour of it’s flying time each year is very strictly managed, and there just wouldn’t be the required spare hours available for the filming. Plus, I’d be surprised if they let just anyone ‘have a go’ anyway!
Quite right too!!!
Lancman’s information is quite correct.
As some of you know,I had the fantastic honour of booking PA474 to attend our motorsport event in September at Blyton, and just as Lancman says, every hour is ‘accounted’ for.
I will quote you from the official bumf which I still have, from the Operations personnel at Coningsby:
One of the principal factors governing BBMF flying operations is the strict seasonal limit on flying hours, intended to ensure the long term preservation of our historic aircraft. We therefore try to wring the maximum possible benefit from every hour in the air and it is sometimes necessary to co-ordinate several displays and/or flypasts into one sortie.
Not only that, but I doubt that when it was filmed, that it would have been possible to use PA474,as it was in the middle of the display season, and while i do like the Canadian Lanc,I do have a soft spot for PA474,in fact, the day it appeared at Blyton,it was amazing to hear the number of people that were thrilled that it was there.(Me included!!!!! 😀 )
Ken.
Many thanks for that Damien.
I will now make tracks to Multimap for an exact location. What is most embarrasing,is that I’m one of the thousands of this country’s HGV drivers,so should have known where it is. 😮
