Why, when talking about preserving large aircraft (such as the Nimrod), does everyone seem to assume it has to be put back into one piece straightaway?
Why can’t the RAFMuseum create a (relatively) inexpensive deep-store facility where Nimrod, Hercules, VC-10, Chinook, etc. can be stored safely indoors in a dismantled state until such time as the funds might become available to put them on display.
It must surely be possible to find an existing hangar (on a site with a long-term future!) that could be insulated, sealed and given a modicum of climate clontrol to reduce deterioration.
Roger Smith.
Such a facility already exists at Cosford. The RAF Museum ‘deep Store’ over the far side and housed in one of the grassed over ‘Lamella’ hangars has been refurbished and fitted with the same aircon / dehumidifier system as that fitted to the storage hangars at RAF Shawbury. Having had the privilege of visiting this in the past, it already has a number of dismantled aircraft stored within and although the layout is somewhat haphazard could be re-organised to fit a Nimrod sized aircraft. The alternative is to store it at Shawbury of course…
T7 XL563 – last noted in Nov 2009 sat dismantled in a farmers field near Southmoor, Oxfordshire
T7 XL609 – f/f 01/12/1958, d/d 22/12/1958, to 8866M, b/u Lossiemouth, ex Elgin, Firbeck, Boscombe Down Down. Privately owned Yarmouth Isle of Wight
9. Estimated Value of Requirement: Category J1: 20K – 40K GBP
So the cost of buying one back is more than the total income achieved by selling off all those at St Athan a couple of years back…….
BRILLIANT !!!
Can the numties within the MOD get any worse……
The two grey examples on the ranges are GR3 none of the GR1’s would have been sprayed grey for the hell of it they were all camo i think
Nope they are both GR1’s in fact the rear end of XX962 is still camo’d ! Were repainted during their time at Cosford.

Have a look here:

Lots of info on the cameras and the ports.
didn’t know they had a paint facility at cosford or were they “roller ” painted
I suspect the latter, especially as one was only half done. Were the only two they tried it on I believe.
Winter opening 2010 onwards
Just to add to the view that the DX management are looking for new ways to raise funds by doing less, had this from a source….
As predicted the entrance fee to IWM-Duxford was raised from £16-00 per adult to £16-50 and the “proposed” closures are now to quote management “set in stone” so come the end of October hangars 2,3,5 and the Land Warfare Hall will be closed to the public. The entrance fee will be reduced by just £2-00 to £14-50 per adult!
So this Winter £16.00 gets you access to the entire site, next Winter a ‘bargain’ £14:50 gets you access to less than half the site…………..
Unless something has changed recently, the closures are for the “winter season” not permanently…
Correct, I’ve amended the title to better reflect this.
Still doesn’t change the fact that from Nov 2010 for the winter period you will get access to only half the exhibition space for a mere 50p less than you were paying for entry to the whole site until the end of 2009 !
Fantastic photo’s, can very vaguely remember going myself although I was only just 6 at the time!
The Hunter photo is quite interesting as I have driven over that spot many times in the past few years as its now part of the test track at Gaydon. The nearer of the two hangars on that photo still stands fairly unchanged – now known as B118 its the main vehicle development workshop on site. The other hangar (B117) was re-roofed with a more traditional pitch roof, but the walls remain in place.
Nice to see, thanks for sharing.
Inkworm already mentioned this SHAR in post #681, 4K for a completely stripped out fuselage on stands, no wings, no undercarts, no cockpit to talk of, no nozzles, no tail or stabs, and a whacking great crease just in front of the port intake that could be the signs of a twisted frame…….all of a sudden it aint so cheap!!!.
John.
That said where else can you find a genuine combat veteran with two ‘kills’ to its name….
Dagger C-433 1/5/82 & Dagger C-409 21/5/82.
Make an ideal candidate for a cockpit only rebuild back to its FRS1 state and then is a very desirable property.
Oh if only I had the funds !!:(
I dont know what you mean Bruce!
All my new pit needs is a lick of paint 😀
Jon
So you picked up your new project then Jon ?
Interestingly I have recently been sent a picture of T11 XE993 by its new owner – makes yours look positively concourse ! 😮
Clearly getting bitten by a Vampire changes your view of the world. :diablo:
Seriously though all the best with your restoration, I’m sure it will be a magnificent job once completed.
Incidentally, it looks like scrapping the Nimrod MR2 has commenced at Kinloss…
😮
Have you any details ?
Its been there for the last few months, sat in the same area as the Domine. Rumour has it that its due to be put on display somewhere at Cranwell, but nothing appears to have happened regarding that story recently. Given that Cranwell have a number of ‘active’ Jaguars its probably still being used as a spares source.
IF it finally is declared surplus the best hope is it appears amongst the PUBLIC disposals from the DSA….
Currently stored at Exeter Airport and noted there this week. As the ebay link above shows now looks like what can be salvaged is starting to be sold off…
Not my pics. The album was shared via a FB page. I’m sure Mark12 will know a lot more…..
