yes vulcan is out on longterm display

Is that long term as in until the hangar is finished or long term as in until XH558 arrives? 😀 😀 😀

The Camel crash looks quite realistic

Assumed to be a studio effect

Either that, or Stella paid a lot of cash to make the advert!! 😮

    Prehaps they mean things like

    DH Dragon
    DH Dragon Rapide
    Ju52
    DC3
    Lockheed Electra Junior
    Lockheed Super Constellation

Hang on! These ARE all at Legends 😀

Always a wheeze to chalk up two differnt reg no.s on different sides of an a/c that’s on rebuild. gets the number crunchers going everytime!! 😀

I’ve had this happen to me. It’s a bit like having a goal disallowed by the (swiss?) referee!! 🙂

At the risk of incurring some wrath, 😮 what do Reg spotters get out of taking numbers off the side of aircraft? Not wishing to upset anyone, I am genuinely wanting to know.

    OK. That’s a sensible question.

    Answer…..

    Because I enjoy doing it!!

It’s a bit like asking why 22 blokes feel the need to kick a football around for 90minutes. I don’t understand the need for that, but they enjoy it so I’m not going to knock it!!

I do agree that there are some people out there that are ONLY interested in the numbers (I am NOT one of these) and they are difficult to understand even to me as they appear to have no actual interest in aeroplanes. These are the sort of people who leave an airshow before the flying display starts because they’ve already logged everything on the field. However, not all ‘spotters’ are like this and while you have clearly come across some who are, please don’t tar all ‘spotters’ with the same brush as some ‘spotters’ are VERY interested in the history of that pile of parts against the hangar wall!!

    Cheers

P.S. I am not suggesting, of course, that any enthusiast or spotter should be given unlimited access to any hangar or airfield. That decision is quite rightly down to the hangar owner/operator.

And thanks also to all those who spend all year working on them to keep them flying.

    Well done everybody.

Wasn’t the Sandtoft aircraft one of the ones used in ‘Hanover Street’?

If so it’s very sad when an airworthy warbird end up in this state

Yes, I take your point that static aircraft left to rot can end up in an appalling condition, however, XH558 was complete and working when the decision was made to start work. Although it needed doing to make it fly it did still operate (and mighty impressive it was too). The Duxford example is exactly as it was when it was delivered and in that sense more original.

I realise that ‘most’ people visiting a museum wouldn’t be able to tell the difference whether an aeroplane is original or not, and probably aren’t going to get too upset if some relatively minor alterations have been made. But that is quite a short sited view. In many years time when there are even fewer Vulcans left (I’m talking about when any Vulcan left outside has returned to nature) it is our duty to preserve these machine in as original a condition as possible and I feel that XJ824 would do that better than XH558.

I look forward to seeing ‘558 in the air, but my opinion is that when the time comes for it’s last flight then there are other museums more deserving than Duxford as Duxford already has a perfectly good Vulcan. Elvington would be a sensible place as they do not have a Vulcan and they carry out (or did) taxi runs with their Victor. Bruntingthorpe would be ideal as hangar space is availible (see earlier comment!!) and taxi runs can also continue here.

Besides, is Duxford planning to have 2 Vulcans? or are there ‘other’ plans for XJ824?

Strange, isn’t it. People dig up crashed aeroplanes and rebuild them to fly, but nobody wants to touch this largely complete but badly corroded example. It is still a B25. How many WW2 bombers do you find just lying around?
Would anyone have any idea what it’s worth as it stands?

It sounds like the sort of thing that somebody like Aeroventure in Doncaster would happily take on but I imagine that even in this condition the purchase cost would be too great.

Isn’t there another one at Sandtoft? Maybe if you put the 2 together you could get 1 complete example but that, of course, means ‘purchase cost x2’

    Maybe it’s a security issue – you know… after 9/11 etc etc
Strange to pick Pakistan Airlines though I though it was british and american airlines that were under threat. Hmmm….

As for displaying her at Duxford (or wherever) when she finally runs out of life, how many of the people who willsee her willknow that there is no operational armaments system or no 1960’s nav kit? Of the small percentage who do know, who will care?

Glad to know that people don’t care whether a restored static aeroplane is complete internally or not.
Clearly the last 10 years worth of work by the Sunderland crew at Duxford has been a complete waste of time

    Thanks

    Willow

P.S. XJ824 at Duxford is undoubtably in better condition anyway because it hasn’t been taken apart and (hopefully) put back together again since it came out of service. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Then maybe the suggestion of making the BBMF a private organisation along the lines of the RNHF would get around the PC issue

This word to me means play or train spotter who writes numbers down day after day i don’t think anyone here is like that.

Don’t be so certain. While Steve964s definition of anorak is also how I see it and no offence was taken, Duxfordhawk takes another view.
Yes, I am a ‘spotter’ ie I log down aircraft serials/registrations and keep them on a database. I also take photos, I have also been actively involved in historic aircraft restoration. Yes, I like to speculate on what will/will not be present, but I’ll still be going to Legends whatever is there becuase it’s the best show in the world and I have been to every one (my first Duxford show was in 1976 and I’ve been every year since).

I don’t object to the term anorak, in fact it’s become a bit of a joke, but I don’t see why writing down a few numbers (quite a lot of numbers actually) means that I should not be welcome on this forum. It is all part of how I enjoy the general interest that we all share in historic aeroplanes.

    Disgruntled, Willow
