Hopefully it doesn’t have any restoration paperwork issues.

Is it owned by a well known operator or by someone new, does anyone know?

This was a common scheme on RAF aircraft of that era. Vampires and Sabres also carried the same scheme. It may possibly have been for aircraft based in Germany?????
The underside colour is the same PR blue as carried by PR Spitfires during WW2.

    I think!

I guess ‘recently’ was a bit longer ago than I thought!

Does anyone know if Jumpin’ Jacques is still in the same scheme or has it been repainted?

David Gilmours P51 ‘G-SIRR’ was based here until recently, but I think it has now been exported.
Rob Lamplough usually bases his P51 at Filton with his Spitfire VIII, although his hangar at North Weald still housed his project aircraft, including the Hurricane, when the hangar was open a couple of years ago.

Is there any news on what is happenning with the 2 C54s? Is the filming still going to take place?

Unfortunately all the railway tunnels I get to visit still have trains running through them, so as yet I haven’t found any aircraft parts.

I’ll keep looking though. You never know!

The only aviation related ‘treasure’ that I’ve ever found beside the railway was a pen. Not too exciting, but I found it near Hatfield, and it had ‘Hawker Siddeley’ inscribed on it, so I was happy with the find.

Thanks Ashley, sound like a really good day. Unfortunately, I’m also on Honeymoon (not with Damien!!!) and don’t get back till the evening of the 14th. Damn.

As a Sunderland crew member since 1982, I’d be more than happy to bore everone to sleep on a tour of the old boot!

With that in mind, probably best for everyone that I’m not going to make it:D

Hopefully meet you all one the next one.

IS there a good colour scheme for a TF51? The type is an invention of the warbird market, using some ideas from the Cavalier conversions. I don’t think any TF51s have seen active service anywhere. Therefore, the owner can paint it any way he likes and it will not be authentic.

Some look better than others, Crazy Horse is a nice one, so is Mad Max (another Stallion 51 a/c) but the new UK based one looks terrible.

At least 2-seat Spits actually saw military service, in India and Ireland at least. The original conversion had an enormous rear canopy (as the rebuilt PV202 will have) but the modified ones like ML407 (the Grace Spitfire) keep the original contours and look just fine to me.

Actually, ML407 is one of my favourites.

I think you’ll find that one of the main reasons TFC was originally based at Duxford is because of the free hangarage.

Because of this, poor old Sally B has to live outdoors during the Summer (and Autumn, and Spring as well).

Can you imagine the uproar (from Lancman alone) if the BBMF had to keep their Lancaster outside for most of the year?

It’s exactly because TFC is based at Duxford that it is frowned upon for what it does sometimes. Flying A Services at North Weald are, I believe, the Legacy of Doug Arnolds Warbirds of Great Britain collection. His organisation existed purely for trade, and probably exported more warbirds from this country than everybody else put together including an AIRWORTHY Mosquito.
The only good that came of this was the Lanc which is now with the IWM at Duxford, which came from WoGB.

At least we get to see TFCs aeroplanes regularly.

So maybe they’re not that bad.

    So I’ll stop complaining now.

And I’ll even shut up about the Mosquito (especially because, as has been stated, it hasn’t been confirmed by TFC yet).

But I’d still like to know if the Ki43 still exists,
and what the rumours are about a P61!!

Sorry, hadn’t read your response when I posted mine.

I’m not actually saying that I wished TFC didn’t exist, that would be incredibly short sighted. I agree that without it, we wouldn’t have the mix of warbirds in the UK that we have today. We also wouldn’t have Legends.

    I am very grateful.

I just don’t like historic aircraft being a business instead of Heritage.

    Sorry!

Sorry, yes, the one that was sold was a ‘C’ not a ‘B’.

Hadn’t heard about the new one.

Maybe I’ll check out the TFC website to find out all about it.

The P40B was found in Russia, exported to Duxford for TFC, sent to USA for restoration, flown, and then…..

    SOLD.

    Bah.

Yes, everything that has been sold makes cash for new purchases and pays for restorations, but that doesn’t mean that I have to like losing aircraft like ML417 which I’ve known since it first flew after restoration.

    Actually not JUST the Mossie.

    What about,

    Spitfire ML417
    Hurricane ‘Z7381’
    Spitfire SM832
    Mustang ‘Candyman’
    The original Wildcat
    The 2nd Bearcat
    The Yak C11 (G-KYAK I think)
and last but by no means least

    THE P40B Tomahawk

Oh, and the B25, Skyraider, and P40 were all offered for sale a while ago.

OK, OK so the Bearcat and Wildcat we still have one of each, Candyman didn’t move far (but it got repainted, grrrr), the Hurricane didn’t go far either, and the Spit XIV usually comes back for Legends each year, but ML417 is a long way away, the Yak is no longer Duxford based (North Weald?) and as for the Tomahawk……….

It just doesn’t lead to a stable base for the volunteers. Why spend many hours working on an aeroplane when at the back of your mind is the thought that it could be sold off if the right opportunity arose.

I do appreciate that trading can be a benefit, otherwise we wouldn’t have a P38 on the way, I just hate losing well known warbirds, or losing REALLY sought after rebuilds (like the Mossie and P40B).
