When I read “fireball” I feared the worst but it seems the pilot was incredibly fortunate to escape at all and, given time, I hope he makes a full recovery

Initial impact was very fiery,,,Kemble fire crew straight on the scene, did a grand job,,

lancastermkx, that’s in a tank though. Fuels react completely differently in a tank when vapours are present to how they do in open air. They’re very different things, and the vapours are infinitely more explosive and dangerous than the liquid fuel itself.

EEErrrm,,,the tank in question had no top on ,,open to the atmosphere.

Looks like an overfill to be honest, but there should be a shut-off protection valve to stop it overfilling. I am not knowledgeable on the 738 so I might be totally wrong. To be honest JetA1 is just diesel, you wouldn’t be able to set fire to it even if you tried 😉

Diesel eh,,,,,,,,i reguarly dispose of aircraft and believe me it is highly flammable,,,ok not as bad as petrol but certainly more volatile than diesel,i have had a centre tank of a 747 which was drained of fuel,,just a bit of residual in the pipes,,one swipe with the machine and up she went ,,a fairly big fire enough to take my oxygen away, luckily manadged to reverse out in time

It occurs to me that I don’t know of any accident where cutting along the dotted line was both necessary and possible.
Has anyone ever seen it done?

We have tried this with the standard issue fire axe ,,,nigh on impossible ,,even if you get through the outer skin you have hatbins and interior trim to contend with,,even with a petrol cutter in the mayhem of possible leaking fuel and fluids this will be a risky process ,as most of you know i pull apart various airframes with a more than adequate machine and even this struggles sometimes,,

“Husquvarna petrol cutter works better,,,,or even a 35ton excavator”

Thanks mate, If you just happen to have one of either in your pocket at the time of the emergency ????
Can I assume from your address and knowledge of the equipment that you attack aircraft on the tarmac at Lasham ?? :diablo: :diablo:

    Keith.

Attack is a bit strong ,,,,we like to call it sympathetic airframe disposal (S.A.D) we did a Fokker 100 at Norwich i think around two years ago now.
