Nice shots Dreyerce , is there a reason for the large pool of water in front of the Shack at the end of the ground run sequence?!
.
Perhaps the marshaller in the other two photos pi**ed himself when he thought the Shack was going to jump the chocks!;)
Here are the colours of Ark Royal’s Whirlwind and Wessex operating when 803 Squadron’s Scimitars were on board.

I’m coming into this a bit late, but here goes. I worked for Aviation Traders in the 1960s, the firm being part of the Air Holdings empire, which also included British United (and its Air Ferries offshoot). So, we were responsible for servcing both the B.170s and Carvairs at Lydd and Southend. The Southend-Ostend route was formally a joint operation with SABENA, but as the later did not actually contribute any aircraft, one of the BUA Superfreieghters was always painted in SABENA livery and used as far as possible on that route. G-APAV, the 212th and last B.170 built, was one of four so painted. Lacking the correct SABENA blue, it was painted at Southend in the ‘best match’ Dulux shade that we could find! Hence, the blue does not quite match the official SABENA colour. Whther the previous three aircraft were also painted with Dulux colour I cannot say.
I have a rather nice photo of G-APAV lifting out of Southend in volume 1 of the second edition of A J Jackson’s ‘British Civil Aircraft Since 1919′, pubvlished by Putnam qwuite some years’ ago now. I will try and locate it in my collection and put it up here shortly.
Very interesting John, I always wondered why it was a lighter blue. Here are a couple of Kodachrome slides in my collection I have scanned taken at Southend in August 1964.

Air Ferry opersated Mk 32 G-ANVR leased from BUA
Air Ferry didn’t operate 31’s
Check them out;)

Check THIS out!

Some pictures from when my step dad was on HMS Tracker. I will add some more of a Couple of Swordfish mishaps plus what looks like an attack on a U Boat
Well well, a couple of these look familiar Keith! Good to see the whole set.;)
Thanks very much guys. Much appreciated. For any modellers attending the IPMS Scalemodelworld show at Telford on 7/8th November, come and see the Aerobatic Teams Special Interest Group whose theme this year is…..you guessed it…”Australasia Aerobatic Teams”, covering Oz & NZ.
Many thanks for a great thread and superb set of pics. This must be the most immaculately restored Lightning existing today? Now a query?
When 458 was initially restored to this high standard, the port side was painted in the beautiful and authentic red and white colours of 226 OCU which very few people got to see before it was repainted into 92 Squadron’s colours. Although still very nice, I do feel it is a shame that this detracted from the authenticity of the machine, in view that 92 Squadron never operated a T.5, only a T.4. What was the reasoning behind this repaint, as I would have loved to have seen the 226 OCU scheme which was accurate for a T5?
Kenneth More’s autobiography “More or less”. Brilliant! 😉
Kenneth More’s autobiography “More or less”. Brilliant! 😉
This should read ‘Open day at Charlwood, as when I read the thread title, I envisaged airport ramp tours, trips to the dump to see the Herald and Comet, visits to the ATC tower etc:p
Hi all,
DH60M Moth ZK-AEJ arrives in the U.K. on July 27.
It will take up it’s old marks G-AAXG and be based at Goodwood.
Once Simon obtains his license he will move the Moth to Annemasse.Cheers,
Tim
Wonderful news, hope to see her at the DH Moth Meet at Halton next year>
BTW, where on earth is ‘Annemasse’?
The show itself was a pale shadow of those 10 years and more ago – perhaps half the number of static aircraft.
A QUARTER actually! There used to be 300-400 aircraft in static and this year there were just 90! RIAT are still putting out press releases saying ” With over 300+ aircraft participating…”. !!!!
And who considered an FAA 100-year display without including the Historical Flight? Not that they could have flown in the weather, admittedly, but they weren’t even there. Oh yes, a Chipmunk. Hurrah for that.
If you read the forums, it was well known that the entire RNHF are grounded and unservicable for various reasons. I guess funding is always going to be an issue, but this must have been quite embarrassing. You would think they could have had an FAA Pageant with TFC Wildcat/Martlet, Kennet’s Seafire and Wasp, Shuttleworth’s Pup etc. Lots of airworthy types privately owned that were flown by the FAA. Surely, not the old ‘cost’ issue again? As you say Graham, the ticket prices creep up, yet the number of aircraft are decreasing…something wrong there!
Might I draw your attention to Peter’s comments a few posts above…
…ooooh, dangerous ground, pitching the moderators against eachother!
I share a lot of the views of Chox and Wyvern. Air show organisers seem to have little imagination at air shows these days. Plonk a few common types in the static and fly noisy fast jets up and down the flightline, concluding with the Red Arrows and they think that’s enough! Yes times change and we have the lovely CAA and Heath & Safety to ruin things.
I recall the wonderful RAF 38 Group set piece attacks with transports (Beverleys, then Argosies) deploying tanks and troops whilst Hunters beat up the airfield with pyrotechnics being let off on the groundand helicopters deployed more troops. These days with our armed forces being so stretched, I don’t expect to see such spectacles..until the RAF introduced the Role Demo which brought back all that excitement a couple of years ago! The Kemble show organisers have imagination and often have pyrotechnics whilst the airfield is ‘beat up’, so why did RIAT have such a lack-lustre flying display with nothing to excite or be ‘different’? Yes there was some good flying and airmanship, but they could do better overall!
I regret it is now confirmed that the casualty was well known and liked pilot John Fairey
Moggy
This is very sad. I have known John for about 40 years, from when he was the owner of Spitfire G-AIDN and is the son of Sir Richard Fairey, founder of Fairey Aviation. A gentleman if ever there was one.
R.I.P – my thoughts are with his family.
