Yeah was that at RIAT? The Lanc has flown in some formations but they are very few and far between.
The fighters seam to be doing more formation work now. I remember at one Flying Legend when they wanted to do a four ship Hurricain formation( the first for a number of years), but the BBMF wouldn’t or couldn’t play so they sent up two or three Hurries straight after the BBMF display and they had them all up in the air together, just not in the same piece of sky.:D
I think it has something to do with them still being owned by the RAF and so everything has to be cleared by them.

I would imagine RIAT would have more pulling power, larger crowds, more tv coverage ect, but RIAT does not tend to have many foreign warbirds and relies mainly on UK stuff.
I cant see it as a problem if the Canadian Lanc comes over as Duxford and Fairford can not be that far apart by air. Just look at how many shows Diamond Lil apeared at. I just cann’t see the BBMF Lanc and Canadian Lanc flying together, well not without a 500ft seperation. We all know how the BBMF feels about flying with other aircraft.
The thing we all need to remember is that enthusiasts make up only a small percentage of the crowd and so do not effect the amount of visiters as much as we would like to think.

If i remember right it was in 1994/5 that the BBMF flew in formation with Black 6 and the former Hans Dittes 109. And they flew close together. So it can be done.

The Catalina of Plane Sailing will not be at legends as it has a booking in Austria that same weekend. But maybe the Dutch Cat will be there!

How come that a later mark had a highback instead of a lowback?

But on the other end, the planes are saved end will be well preserved. And if they don’t fly they will survive for a very long time.

I think Johnie Houlton flew both aircraft on the same day . That would tie in with ML407 being damaged and quickly repaired.

Johnnie Houlton flew ML407 for 35 min om D-day, He took of in a spare aircraft that day. That being ML176, he also flew a mission at 1445. On that mission he flew MK950.
MK732 was flow by K.J. Mac Donald. He shared a kill with Johnnie Houlton. That being a Ju88. So ML407 did only fly for a few min. On the D-day. This al according to Spitfire the New Zealand Story.

Ok first I have heard this. Any idea where this new information has come from? D Day was always going to be a chaotic day in many ways so it is entirely possible that ML407 would have a rival for this distinction, but were they both on charge with 485 squadron or was MK732 with another squadron and involved in another action? What ever if she is to project this part of her history then perhaps she’s in the wrong colours

The information came from the book Spitfire, The New Zealand Story. According to the book ML407 had a minor accedent during take off, on the 6th, and was being repaired.
MK732, was with 485 during that time. Don’t think MK732 is in the wrong colours, as she is wearing her proper colours when she flew with the Dutch Air Force.

So whats the history/ownership of the Dutch Spit and when was it restored?

The Dutch Spit is owned by the Dutch Airforce and operated by the Dutch Royal Airforce Historical flight.
She shot down the first aircraft during D-day.
Restored in the early 90’s by the Dutch Spitfire Flight.

I Just wondered if there are any examples of this aircraft still flying anywhere in the world.

As far as I know there is no Stuka flying. There was word on one on rebuilt to fly. Maybe there is a scaled one flying?

Thanks BR – at least I have my dreams..;)

Now another airframe querry for Tim… was the FE position accessible?.. as in any pics from the pylon windows?? Just curious regarding the view from that location amidst the thunder.

The few you’ve got is blockt by 2 big wacking engines. The noise is incredable. But wel worth it.

Yes I was surprised too – but on splash and go at higher speed I guess it allows manoeuvrability to turn the aircraft slightly on the water surface which is experienced too.
    Tim

Its commen practice, as when you are at higher speed you do not have the risk on flipping to one side.

Herman, I looked into these image tanks but am very reluctant to stick all my photos on a single device. Plus it’s additional weight. I found a couple of affordable and fast 8 GB cards, which will nicely complimant the 12 gigs I already have! 😀 In the evenings I’ll burn everything to DVD, and have my cards ready again for the next day, without worrying about charging batteries, etc, etc…

That was my first thought as well, but now I don’t want it other wise. Went to the states for 4 weeks end used it extensively. It did not fail me.

Does anybody have tips for taking a bulk of camera gear to the USA?

I’m going to the Mustangs and Legends airshow and plan to take my SLR plus two lenses including the big 100-400mm Canon lens. I am a bit hesitant to put the big lens into my suitcase and have it thrown about by the luggage handlers. But at the same time I am worried I might get trouble taking it onboard. With all the terrorist fears of recent years and all I don’t know if they’ll let me carry three pounds of steel in my hand luggage. I don’t want to be facing a “lose your lens or lose your flight” dilemma at the hand luggage check…

    Any advice?

NB. I’ll be travelling with a Canadian airline. Not sure if they’re less “paranoid” than their US counterparts?

Did go to the states e few months back, took all my camera gear onboard with me. No problem with securiti what so ever.
What are packing for memory? Don’t hope you cary a lot of memory cards? Did buy a an imagetank. 120gig it will set you back for about 100 ponds, sounds a lot but is a lot cheaper than memory cards. Its the size of a pda, so you don’t have to carry a laptop with you.
