I cant watch the PC edited version that appears on Television now and again. that spoken part when the airman tells Gibson about the dogs death sounds like this to me,
‘I’m Sorry Sir,It’s Neurgghh, he’s dead’.
Spoils the whole bloody film! 😀
Nothing as elaborate as an aircraft, but our small group are planning the construction of the RAF Sawbridgeworth Memorial. Along with this we are putting together a couple of fundraising events, one of which will be a talk by Prof MRD Foot early next year on the involvement of the SOE and the RAF in early Lysander ops with 1419 flight, as several members of 2 (AC) Squadron from Sawbridgeworth were involved with the formation of 1419 Flight.
Next year sees 2 (AC) holding a reunion, it is hoped that this could be a joint occasion, The dedication of the Memorial and the reunion at the same time.
I may be wrong, but there are quite a few American Navy types based at West Ruislip. I was doing some work there a couple of months ago and was surprised to see USN chaps sweeping the car park one day.
Welcome to the forum James,
no doubt you will be inundated with questions very soon!.
As far as I am aware The airfield construction started in 1942. The only B-17’s associated with Stansted were those in storage at the end of the war and not used operationally.
Blimey!
I was there too, if I had known a few more of you were going I’d have arranged to say ‘ello’.
Wonderful night as always, finally got to have a trip around whats left of the airfield on the Queen Mary trailer, was that cold or what!, made you think of all those aircrew years ago who worked on the Lancs out in the dispersals, and they were out there all week long no matter what the weather.
A big Thank you to all involved in this unique and special museum.
Absolutely stunning, top marks to all involved in the restoration, and indeed the recovery of this airframe.
Never seen a Hallibag in the flesh, apart from (cough) Hendons example, one day I will get to Canada….hopefully !.
I will observe the silence where ever I may be at that time, even if driving on a motorway.
I will still pull onto the hard shoulder and exit the vehicle, Always have, always will.
Spitfire Madness……or Spitfire Nonchalance ?
We had friends over from California recently, when a Spitfire flew over our house one weekend, Dave went into raptures, I didnt even look up, ‘Wow a Spitfire’ he gleefully shouted as he ran into the garden, ‘we see them all the time Dave, no big deal anymore’ I said.
There was a time when i would have jumped out of my chair to run and look, but this day and age with the prospect of more to become airworthy has taken the magic away.
Now a Hurricane is an entirely different matter 😀
Hah! thanks John, knew someone would have one! , ok to use it in a very limited batch of assorted cards?.
Gosfield Essex, has a freshly asphalted Runway formerly used by ‘Which Car’ Magazine, the owner does let it out for Speed trials, (have his phone number here somewhere but damned if I can find it) have a ride down there and you are bound to meet the bloke, his office is in the old control tower.
Thanks guzzineil, going to Eask Kirkby on the 19 November so I might be able to pick some up there I should imagine.
I Still want a disused control Tower Winter scene ahem!
Thx GASML 🙂
Stiil wanting a control tower in a winter scene though 😉

Something I was sent ages ago in reguard to aircraft combat losses in and arroung the Thames Estuary.
13th or 14th June 1941: Havoc 1 (DB7) AX848 ‘K’ Sgt T Berkeley, Sgt R Carr both killed after being shot down whilst attacking He111’s over the Thames Estuary aircraft impacted the water and sunk without trace, it was not deemed recoverable.
Was that by chance an 85 Squadron machine?.
You can include me Bruce, I will have a chance to pick that book up at last!
