& another one from my late fathers collection-
Unsure of the year, looks to be a Shack AEW2 at VAHS & a Canberra, so mid 70’s ish?
Really close to Air day with the tents and erections (!) I would say………
Corr you and win.co. do love using ‘er’ and picking up on the niff naff!
It was from memory, I always thought s.side had green centre line lights – my bad.
Your correct with S.side and green centreline lights, they ran the entire length.
Sorry mate, just correcting your niff naff correction:D
Again from memory I think blue was 60′ and over, hence n.side having them on the taxiway edges, and s.side having green centrelines for its under 60′ width.
Got an old JSP lying around somewhere I will try and confirm!
Er..no James, don’t need a JSP to remember this .
Taxyway lights were green centre line 60 ft and over, blue edge lights <60 ft.
However, during the early 80s (at SM) taxyways between 60 & 45ft were blue and amber edge lighting, with the blue edge indicating the direction of the runway (ie the inner edge of the airfield) and below 45ft blue either side.
Can’t remember what I had for tea yesterday, remember this cr@p till I die!
cheers
Baz
Regular visitor, Canberra TT18 WK128.
Money was never an issue when building St Mawgan airside, but technical and domestic site?
I believe the narrow bit was the original width for the entire length, then the wider bits added when the goal posts changed.

These two pictures were taken by S/L Hynds 5th September 1983 (1116.Z)
I’m sat in the Landrover on ‘oscar’ access.
It’s high time a decent film was made about The Great Escape, telling the true story and not the hyped up Hollywood nonsense of the 1960’s version with motorbykes and plane crashes and closterphobic tunnellers and make-believe American charcaters. The true story is better thanthe fiction.
Totally agree, but keep the music:)
Best ever flight was in a Spitfire.
Worst
Flying into the eye of a hurricane in 1995 .
the only person to get Spitfire and Hurricane into the same post!:D
I’m jealous :p
Baz
Baz, all those bits you mention, were in 403 by the time I saw them, things must have moved around quickly, I think alot happened in th ’89-’91 period.
1981 – 1984
Just quickly, before the thread gets locked on the grounds of dullness, what was 401 used for back then?
It’s all on topic:p
It had loads of ground equipment and crash trolleys (the big stuff) for hauling bellied Nimrods off the runway. IAD caravan and other junk. The western entrance was Nimrod washdown, used after flying LL over the sea or cavorting across the grass………………….I said that last bit out loud, didn’t I ?
I thought 401 was a componants spray bay back then?
That was the building next to 401, airside by the eastern hangar door.
The worst
Whilst navigating behind a pilot in a flex wing microlight during a round Britain competition, within a few minutes after takeoff (Barton) after much verbal resistance from me, flew into the base of a towering CuNim at about 1,000ft.
All the other microlights (60) had veered off left and right to avoid it as the target was to photograph a lighthouse beyond. As we entered from bright sunshine it just got darker and darker, the hail became vicious, the turbulence bouncy. The base of cloud was about 500′ above but not for long! we went up into it losing all groud reference, he had powered off and was shouting for me to help pull the bar in (and steady the wing), I could see the variometer climbing hard then after a minute or two the opposite, we came out ( the right way up ) descending faster than a breeze block, after powering up and pushing the bar forward we got it all back together only to be sucked back up into the base of cloud again, minutes later, thrown out the bottom…again. After what seemed an age, it got brighter and brighter and we emerged the other side out into the sunshine and still air. The other microlights converged and formated on us, we had gained nothing. It gave a new meaning to Flex wing, the cables were either piano wire tight or flopping around uselessly. We looked like a couple of snowmen sat in a deck chair.
We flew on in total silence for several minutes………
There were other instances of near disaster on the same flight/s, it was push on ite’ss at it’s worse. I had/have never been so wet, cold, tired and miserable than those three days.
I never flew with him again.

…er no, it was 403………… 401 was recently the Seaking spray booth and closest to NLF (Treloy) and is still part of RAF St Mawgan today…. 402 hangar was MT in the 80’s and until July 08 was 203 Sqn hangar….403, before being demolished, was behind the tower, XV257 lived in there for a year following the bombay fire………and 404 the Nimrod hangar. 405, as you know is on the otherside of NLF/Treloy….
The Airwork buildings (as was) and now attached to what was No1 Sqn RAF Reg’s vehicle shed, are part of NQY airport, as described above, and still behind the old tower.
What he said!
and Pagens joined photo of the F104 (now scrapped)is Green Hangar, aka Black hangar, aka The old tyre bay, aka 425 (or 426) hangar now demolished ( taken from the RHAG (now removed) pit (now filled)road)
I spent much time in the recovering of the connectors attatching the sleeve cable to the Rushton Tarrant winch after the Canberra ‘bombed’ me on ‘November’ south, then returning them to Airworks in 403 hangar.
I wonder if I could get the front canopy frame off it? If it just silicone sealant it wont last long.
You’ll have to be quick, I think it will be recovered soon by the people who built it, Gateguardsuk.
I will ask him when I see him, Robert.
Fun show 🙂 I was afraid it would fall apart but amazed the glue held 🙂
Out of camera they were using self tapping screws to keep it together:)
Do they feel pain?
Hope so:diablo:
