Browsing the Pathe website thanks to another thread, found this combat footage. looks incredibly clear and crisp compared to other snippets I have seen, is it possible to locate more footage like this? How much gun camera footage was taken in the war and where did it all go?

There is quite a lot on youtube from all nations, some great P47 colour footage, spent a couple of hours trawling through it, searching to match some stills acquired off ebay.

thanks for sharing, some material not previously seen and some very low ground attacks including a wire strike(!)

    cheers

Was talking to an elderly gent admiring my plastic Spitfire in the garden, he eventually let on that he built Spitfires at Castle Bromwich. He fitted the instruments etc. After a while I remembered this thread and asked about the masking mats and how they were painted. He seemed to recall never seeing mats used for camouflage masking but he saw mats used for protecting the wings. He did remember that Spitfires were not painted all in one go, it took too long.

The conversation went back to instruments.

I dunno whether to like that or not! If we got shot of the gullwing and gave it retractable gear, it would look rather good! :p

It would not have made it into squadron service with the crank wing, Mitchell was about to ‘iron’ it out. Whether retracs would have been fitted is another matter, they’re not shown in the 1934 catalogue, the staight wing 224 was.

    £15,000!!!!

I think he has seriously over-valued this collection. Or am I mistaken? The size of collection may be rare, but I really can’t see him getting that in this economic climate…

To the original question asked, although I cannot answer this with any definite proof, it is possible the Soviet style markings are there for training purposes, perhaps masquerading as an aggressor for an exercise. I have a photo of an 8 Sqn Shackleton WL790 with a similar star marking being shadowed by a 41 Sqn Jaguar XZ114.

Due to not knowing who’s photo it is, I am reluctant to post in case I breach copyright.

    Hope this helps,
    Kind Regards,
    Scotty

I think he’s pitched it about right, < £1.70 per photo…bargain if he allows copyright on pics he took.

Chased that Shack around St Mawgan with a Landrover after it defected to us during TACEVAL early 80s, chaos.:D

    If we had no Spitfire……….

The Merlin would have probably made it into the 224, put on a canopy and into squadron service…………the Shrew (?)

Do you have any referance material for the cockpit of this machine?

I’ve had a good look at my material and can safely say no.

I know the flight simmers do a 224, I’ve seen it recently, would they have accurately modelled the cockpit?

    cheers
