I have come to the decision today that the Chipmunk Fly-In planned for Coventry this Sunday on April 27th should be postponed until May 18th due to a number of reasons. Firstly, the airfield has asked that aircraft should arrive after 1330 and depart before 1630 due to the increased level of traffic caused by a sporting event locally. I consider this to be rather restrictive and certainly not the desired times that have been suggested by those people booking PPR. Secondly, due to the recent arrival of 3 engines for our Dragon Rapides (which are revenue earning aircraft and thus taking priority over the Chipmunk) the aircraft will not be able to fly on Sunday. Thirdly, the grass parking area that we would be using is currently very wet and there is more rain forecast for Sunday and finally several of the aircraft that were hoping to attend have reported in tech, the change of date may make it possible for them to attend.
I hope this has not caused to much inconvience. I figured it was better to take the decision now rather than leave it any later.
I hope to see as many of you as possible on the 18th.
All the best,
Dave
Its a shame to see that Sean has decided to sell these aircraft, he has been very helpful with info and photo’s for XL954.
Blue Robin – I promise to post a map soon! Basically its £10 to get in for ground bound visitors and entrance is via the West gate by Baginton Village. Flights in the Dakota are £99 each and can be booked via http://www.classicflight.com

The airport has said that its ok for our fly-in to carry on and all they need is a list from me of which aircraft will be arriving, for this I need the following information please :
Aircraft registration, Expected Time of Arrival, Expected Time of Departure, Number of persons on board and where you are coming from.
The Open Day will open at 10 o’clock and the last flight planned is currently at 1830.
Hope to see you there,
Dave
Hopefully I will be back soon BR with one of Mr Jarmans glorious maps and details. 🙂
Unfortunately I cant help with any further info on that Jim, but as you say the Leeming connection sounds like the answer. 🙂

As a former owner of WM167,do you know if it ever served with 29 Squadron?
I first saw it at Acklington on June 1st 1957 and assumed it to be one of 29s a/c even though it didn’t carry their markings but can find no record of its ever being with them,
Jim
As far as I’m aware she only served with 228 OCU at Leeming and the Colerne Station Flight. I will see what we have records wise for her when I’m in the office tomorrow and let you know if I find out anything different. PM me if I forget!
Very saddened to hear this. My condolences to his friends and family – Blue Skies forever Jimmy.
I’m just imagining the formation fun taking place ‘up there’ now with Bee, Carol and Dell.
Could be………;) 😀
Yep lots of crew training going on today, the Devon has been up and about today as well.
Dave,
And when will you be updating your website with contributions & info’ already sent please ?.
All done, sorry for that. 😮
Aaa, have I not done it Dave. I’ll check you’re e-mail and go through it, sorry about that. Been a hecktick few months! Hopefuly all will be done by the end of this evening. 🙂
Should be some new pages going in to change the format slightly soon, make it easier to understand.
Sorry Ben, my slack use of the English language! 😮
I was thinking that they mave have had a mod rather than a replacment back in the 80’s while I was writing that and so it slipped into the sentence. Sorry.
Just to clarify the Shacks need a spar REPLACEMENT.
Without trying to hijack this thread I would be very interested to hear from anybody who has any archive photo’s of Chippys or pictures of non UK residents that they wouldn’t mind me hosting on my site. 🙂
Unfortunately I’m no Shackelton expert so I cant quote hours etc but the spars on all the remaining RAF Shacks were expired when the RAF retired them. The only reason that the RAF were allowed to continue operating them was that they were a ‘required tool of war’ that was seeing plenty of use way beyond their original expected life due to the Nimrod AEW3 debacle.
I’m not sure of the time scale between the end of military Shackelton flying and Air Atlantique acquiring the DA but the CAA wont allow any flights in the UK until a spar mod has been done. As fas as I’m aware that has always been the case.
I’m in the office again on Friday and I’ll see what I can find out, might even venture into the Shackelton Design Office!
I have been following this thread the last day or two.
I checked DGH’s great site to see what happened to 7601M that used to sit in the Bicester Exhibition MU hangar. It was coded (on the instrument panel) “A”. According to UK Serials
http://www.ukserials.com/results.php?serial=WB
it was cn 0240 ex WB709, then to Sri Lanka as CT-103.
But http://www.daveharmsworth.co.uk/pages/chipmunksurvivors.html
says CT-103 is cn 0156.
What is the truth?
As far as I know…..
c/n 0156 was a new build Chipmunk serialled CT-103 thats was delivered as a batch of 12 to the Ceylon Air Force which then changed to the Sri Lanken Air Force. As I understand it she still survives at the SLAF Museum at Ratmalana.
c/n 0240 was built as WB709 and saw service with the RAF during the 1950’s until ending up with 10MU at Hullavington. In 1959 she was allocated the serial 7601M and became a travelling exhibit for recruitment purposes. She was then sold to the Kenyan Air Force in 1967.
If anybody knows anymore I would be very inetersted to hear it. 🙂
